Morpho Eugenia is the first part of the postmodernist novel Angels and Insects by A.S. Byatt. The male world is represented here in abundance by numerous names of famous naturalists, philosophers and poets of the XVII-XVIII centuries and of Victorian England, as well as by the male characters of the novel. It is pointed out that the concepts of “masculine” and “non-masculine” in the novel presuppose double reading, namely, the traditional (Victorian) and posttraditional one (neo-Victorian). In the neo-Victorian interpretation, most of the male characters in the novel are devoid of traditional masculine qualities (honor and dignity, commitment to the cause, inner strength), they bear a stigma of vice (incest), while the “male organization” features of the central female character, non-typical for a Victorian woman (talent, efficiency, perseverance, energy, self-reliance), contribute to the formation of an integral harmonious world of men and women as friends, lovers, like-minded people.

Abstract The struggle to resist dehumanization and maintain a sense of identity and dignity in the German concentration camps has been a key theme in survivor testimonies. Some prisoners assert the paramount importance of religious faith in mustering the inner strength needed to survive. However, the clandestine nature of religious practice in the camps has meant that memoirs provide only fragmentary glimpses of these practices and their significance in the camps. This article seeks to reconstruct a fuller picture of the religious life of Catholic Poles at the Gusen Concentration Camp in Upper Austria from 1940 to 1945. In particular, the article focuses on the activities of a living rosary group organized by Wacław Milke and Władysław Gębik. This group was unusual in the breadth of its activities and its extensive network of contacts. Not only did it organize religious devotions, but it also provided life-saving practical assistance to other prisoners.

AbstractInner strength is a conceptualization of a human resource that is generally considered beneficial for health and well-being. Previously, it has been examined in qualitative and cross-sectional studies, but longitudinal data are lacking. The aim of this study was to examine how inner strength, health and function, well-being, and negative life events, namely crises and diseases, affect each other over time in old people. A longitudinal two-wave design was used with data from 2010 and 2016. A total of 4023 participants, living in Finland and Sweden, and born in 1930, 1935, 1940, or 1945 were included. Data were collected using the Inner Strength Scale, the Life Orientation Scale, a short version of the Geriatric Depression Scale, one item from the SF36, and five items from the Katz ADL-index. Structural equation modeling was used to test for cross-lagged effects. Crises and diseases were found to be a positive predictor of inner strength, a negative predictor of well-being, and to have no significant effect on health and function over time. Inner strength and well-being had a reciprocal positive relationship, and health and function was a positive predictor inner strength. The study expands findings by providing perspectives of inner strength across time indicating that inner strength in old people increases when they have to face a disease or crisis. From a health perspective, the present findings reinforce the importance of healthcare professionals’ awareness and knowledge of the construct of inner strength.

Some studies reported that rituals practice in Islam have an impact on the psychological health breast cancer patient. AIM: The aim of the study was to explore the experience of psychological alteration among patients with advanced breast cancer. METHODS: A qualitative study utilizing the content analysis approach was organized. Twenty Muslims with breast cancer during chemotherapy treatment with a mean age of 47.1 years who dealt with their psychological responses during treatment were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview, before and after applying Islamic-based practice therapy. This study conducted between February and June 2018 in the outpatient unit of chemotherapy in one of the Indonesia’s teaching hospitals. The generated data were transcribed verbatim and the content analysis approach was used for data reduction, data names, obtaining analytical code, and determining categories and themes. RESULTS: Four themes emerged from the data analysis before the researchers using the Islamic-based practice therapy: (1) Self-blaming, (2) feeling sad, (3) feeling fear and uncertain, and (4) living with a new body. However, the results after applying the Islamic-based practice therapy emerged three themes: (1) Closer to God, (2) peace of mind, and (3) inner strength. CONCLUSION: Overall, in the view of breast cancer patients, the psychological experience of using the Islamic-based practice therapy could change to positive responses by making them feel closer to God, having good inner strength, and a peaceful mind in dealing with their day-to-day conditions. Hence, understanding the patient’s experience will assist the nurses to promote professional abilities and improve nursing care delivery related to different cultural backgrounds and spiritual dimensions of Muslims patients.

The article reports initial attempts to evaluate a new positive psychological approach to bolster resilience among Muslims in the Netherlands. The approach uses Quranic texts and principles from mental contrasting and implementation intentions (MCII) to encourage Muslims in the Netherlands to reflect in groups on appropriate responses to challenges they are facing. The participants are inspired by Quranic texts and encouraged to write responses to specific challenges in the form of IF-THEN rules and to practice these IF-THEN rules for several weeks. Two studies indicate that this approach increases personal growth initiative. The implications of these findings for the MCII literature and prevention/countering violent extremism are discussed.

Healthcare professionals encounter patients' and relatives' expressions of doubt, despair, and hope in relation to illness and suffering. These feelings and experiences are often challenging for patients, relatives, and carers to face. The article's purpose is to describe and discuss how the meaning of doubt, despair, dread, and belief can be understood through Kierkegaard's and Spinoza's philosophical thoughts, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of caring and knowledge in caring science. Dread, doubt, and despair have their roots in grief and powerlessness but are also connected to belief and faith, which create an inner strength that can alleviate suffering.

The article analyzes the content of the concept of «spiritual creation» and its constituent elements «spirit», «creation»; the means of verbal representation of the studied concept in revealing the content of texts and images of characters in the poetic cycle «Night concerts» are analyzed; the specific in the process of revealing the role of musicians and their works in the life of society, the influence of music on the listener, on the formation of personality are determined; the peculiarity of the poet’s «translation» of the language of music into words are defined. It is emphasized that music is not just a melody for M. Bazhan, it is the truth of feelings, that is why the artist translated it into the language of visible images. A careful reading of the content of M. Bazhan’s «Night concerts» allows us to single out the semantic load of the concept «Spirit»: Spirit of artist; Spirit of music; Spirit of the word (voice); Spirit of the city; Spirit of victory; Spirit-Soul; Spirit of love, and «creation» – as creativity that goes beyond human existence. In each poem that makes up the cycle «Night concerts», we see a personality of the Composer-Creator: E. Villa-Lobos, M. Leontovych, L. Hrabovskyi, Ya. Sibelius, F. Schubert, D. Shostakovych and singer Edith Piaf, who is also a creative person. As composers, whose personalities and destinies are revealed in the works of the artist, the Poet himself becomes a kind of a translator of the sounds of music into the sounds of poetry. M. Bazhan pays special attention to the character of Edith Piaf, whose songs became a symbol of Paris, its freedom, and the singer’s talent raised her above the crowd, even above the city roofs, in the poet’s vision she is a «midnight soothsayer», «pure prophetess» in whose character Virgin Mother is visible. In «Night concerts» the artist is not limited to the sound aspect of the musicians’ work. He attaches great importance to the features of the performer and composer. Because it is their inner strength, their Spirit is embodied in the works. Reading the poems that make up this cycle of poetry acquaints us not only with creativity, but also with the fate of composers and performers.
