Effective non-native English teachers (NNETs) are essential to facilitate students to develop their English mastery. However, while students are directly affected by teachers’ instructions, they have been limitedly involved in teacher education and development research. The current study aims to explore the qualities of effective non-native English teachers (NNETs) from students’ perspectives in Tanjungpinang, Indonesia. This study was mixed-method research specifically an explanatory sequential design. In the quantitative phase, 380 students were selected using cluster sampling techniques. Meanwhile, in the qualitative phase, six students were purposely selected based on their English proficiency levels and gender. The instruments used were a questionnaire adapted from Park and Lee (2006) and an interview guide. To analyze the questionnaire data, descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were employed. MANOVA test was run to seek significant differences by students’ gender and English proficiency levels. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were coded to identify the emerging patterns. The results show that the qualities concerning teachers’ socio-affective skills gained the highest mean scores compared to those concerning teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical skills. This study also confirms that there was a significant difference among students in perceiving effective NNETs by English proficiency levels. This study is expected to help various stakeholders to improve pre and in-service EFL teacher education and development in Indonesia.

PurposeThis study investigates the effectiveness of microfinance-backed entrepreneurship as a mechanism for the holistic empowerment of women.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a mixed-method research-design consisting of quasi-experimental design (quantitative approach) involving women, both entrepreneurs (132) and non-entrepreneurs (238), as well as in-depth semi-structured interviews (qualitative approach).FindingsQuantitative analysis revealed that female entrepreneurs are better off than female non-entrepreneurs in terms of economic, social, political and psychological indicators of empowerment. However, relatively lesser impact was found in terms of political, and to an even smaller extent, social empowerment of women. Analysis of in-depth interviews corroborated these findings confirming that entrepreneurship serves as an effective tool for the holistic empowerment of women. However, non-entrepreneurs also exhibit social empowerment.Research limitations/implicationsGiven the restricted geographical ambit of the study, prudence ought to be exercised in drawing inferences applied to alternate contexts. That the vast majority of questionnaire respondents are illiterate presented a notable impediment in the process of collection of accurate responses.Practical implicationsMicrofinance intervention ought to be specifically directed to cultivating entrepreneurship among women; in particular, to achieve the full benefits of empowerment, women availing microfinance ought to exert full control over their own business ventures.Originality/valueIn analyzing holistic empowerment through microfinance supported businesses set up by women, the study adds to the existing literature on women entrepreneurship and empowerment.

The current study adopts a mixed-method research design to foster English Language instructors’ attitude toward professional development, self-efficacy beliefs, and reflective thinking. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory constituted the base and the professional development program was designed accordingly. The participants of the study were nine English Language instructors working at three different universities. Throughout the 16-week program, it was aimed to equip the participants with action research skills to conduct their own study in their own context according to their needs and/or interests. All the participants completed the Plan, Act, Observe, and Reflect stages of the Action Research Cycle.

With a central focus on the research question: “What must be done to encourage people to become more E+STEM educated?” this research is based on a Systematic review on ecological knowledge, which is linked to teachers' career growth as well as Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (E+STEM) pedagogy. The aim is to identify what instructors must do to improve their experience and credentials as E+STEM-educated people in light of expert views. To disclose expert views, a "mixed method" research approach is utilized in this study, which includes both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The technique employed is exploratory study sequencing, which is a kind of mixed-method study. The Delphi study's initial stage is to gather qualitative data on teachers' professional growth. The quantitative methodology is featured for the phase two of the Delphi research once the data has been analyzed in the first step. Lastly, the ultimate quantitative formulation (third phase) is produced following the data evaluation in the second phase.

Purpose: The present study assessed the shift to remote teaching of veterinary anatomy during the COVID‐19 pandemic based on students’ perspectives.Methods: Participants were invited to answer an anonymous online Google Form questionnaire using the snowball sampling method. Only students who studied anatomy online during the COVID-19 lockdown period were eligible to answer the questionnaire. A mixed-method research design was used to evaluate students’ perspectives.Results: A total of 961 participants were enrolled in this study from 87 countries and six continents. Data showed that the majority of students (81.6%) were interested in studying anatomy online during the COVID-19 lockdown. Moreover, approximately 82% of students were comfortable with the technological skills, and approximately 61% of students can understand online anatomy well during the lockdown. Furthermore, approximately 52.76% of students believed that online learning of anatomy suited for theoretical, 8.74% believed that it suited for practical parts, and 30.28% believed that it suited for both theoretical and practical parts. On the contrary, about 36.63% of students thought that online learning of anatomy could replace face-to-face teaching. In conclusion, shifting to remote teaching appears to be a good and convenient approach during the lockdown period as shown by students’ interest to study anatomy online during the COVID-19 lockdown, their comfortability with the technological skills, and their level of understanding. However, practical classes with cadaver dissection and dealing with different anatomical specimens is essential for veterinary students; therefore, blended learning is recommended.Conclusion: The study highlighted several challenges associated with studying anatomy online during the lockdown period and recommendation to overcome these challenges.

The profile of students’ mental model was very needed to know student successes and difficulties in describing macroscopic, submicroscopic, symbolic representation as the characteristics of chemistry. This research aimed at analyzing the profile of students’ mental model of experimental and control groups, and knowing the effect of Macromedia Flash based learning media toward students’ mental model at the tenth grade of MIA.  This research was conducted in the Academic Year of 2019/2020 at State Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru on Molecular Shapes lesson. It was Mixed Method Research integrating qualitative and quantitative researches with explanatory design. There were 20 students as the samples selected by using Simple Random sampling technique.  Instruments used in this research were two-tier diagnostic test and interview to strengthen the data obtained. The results of analyzing the data showed that the profile of students’ mental model of experimental group using Macromedia Flash based learning media overall had 70% intact mental model and 30% alternative mental model, the control group students had 37% intact mental model and 63% alternative mental model.  The research findings also showed that there was an effect of Macromedia Flash based learning media toward students’ mental model.  The result of hypothesis testing that SPSS was used to help showed sig. (2-tailed) 0.000, it meant that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected.

The CoViD-19 pandemic has brought change to everything including the landscape of education. It has changed the way how the teachers teach, and the students learn. Due to the different challenges bought by this phenomenon, consideration atop of everything is done including assessment. This study aims to determine the subjectivity of the teachers in assessment in the new normal. This determines whether the challenges in the new normal specifically the channels and forms of assessment influences the teachers’ subjectivity in assessing the students. To achieve this, the study determined the demographic profile, assessment practice, perception on the output of the students in the new normal and their standards in assessment. Mixed method research design was used in the study. It was found that there is relationship between the educational attainment and the teachers’ preference on what to be checked more carefully – hardcopy or softcopy. The teachers’ designation shows that it has a relationship regarding the view on whether to set a maximum and minimum grade limit in assessing the students. Moreover, there is a correlation between the teachers’ perception and their standards in assessment. This study suggests that what the teachers perceive has something to do with their assessment standard. Thus, if they perceive to be more subjective (which the respondents agree as a result of this study) in these times of pandemic, they will be subjective in standardizing their assessment.

This chapter aims to present the methodological critiques on research related to study overseas and international experience under the umbrella of the internationalization of higher education. It will critique seven research articles from three approaches: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method. The critiques will be addressed to the research steps that have been taken by the researchers from their philosophical stands to their findings. The first part of this chapter will present the critiques on qualitative research articles. Then, the second part will discuss the critiques on quantitative research articles. The last part will deliver the critiques on mixed-method research articles. Overall, this chapter attempts to discuss any methodological weaknesses of those research projects and present feedback on their steps using various references on research methodology. The chapter will provide an in-depth reflection for the researchers on conducting their inquiries.

This chapter reflects on the lesson learnt from the application of multi-methods in a quantitative study that was conducted to study patient record management in the public healthcare sector. In this study, a questionnaire was the main data collection tool, which was supported by interviews, observations, and document/system analysis data. In conducting the study, triangulation of multi-methods data was performed at different stages of the study. Currently there is no clear framework in social science research about the application of multi-method, mono-method, and mixed method research, which the study intends to clear. The study revealed that quantitative data need to be augmented with some narrative/qualitative data to make an empirical conclusion and recommendations because alone, it may not be completely reliable. Triangulation of multi-methods eliminates bias and closes some gaps where data leave some questions unanswered. The study provides a framework to guide on research method based on methods ingredients.
