Aḥmad Ibn ʿAjība (d. 1224/1809) was a prominent Sufi mystic who lived in Morocco during the thirteenth/seventeenth century. He stood out as an intellectual theoretician in the field of Qur’anic esoteric hermeneutics as he was one of the few scholars who managed to convey theoretical concepts and esoteric theories of Qur’anic interpretation in a language that is accessible to those who are not well versed in Sufism. In this paper Ibn ʿAjība’s famous Qur’an commentary al-Baḥr al-madīd fī tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-majīd (‘The Oceanic Exegesis of the Qur’an’) will be thoroughly examined, with an emphasis on the key features and the methodological approaches used in the composition of both its exoteric and esoteric aspects. The first section of this paper will examine the historical development of esoteric and Sufi Qur’an exegesis, so as to situate Ibn ʿAjība’s commentary within this genre. A thorough analysis will be given to the key features, guiding principles, and different methodologies adopted by various esoteric Qur’an commentaries. The second section will explore the most influential sources utilised by Ibn ʿAjība to inform the exoteric and esoteric dimensions of al-Baḥr al-madīd. In order to evaluate the extent to which these sources impacted upon the composition of al-Baḥr al-madīd, an analysis of their salient features and the main methodological approaches of these sources will be conducted. It is also important to analyse why Ibn ʿAjība chose certain sources over others, and to clarify the extent to which he depended upon these sources in composing al-Baḥr al-madīd. The third section of this paper will outline the methodology which Ibn ʿAjība adopted when he composed the esoteric dimension of his Qur’an commentary.

This article discusses an interpretation of the Qur’an by Abdullah Said using the contextual interpretation model. However, this paper will focus on how Abdullah Saeed developed the concept hierarchy of values inspired by Fazlur Rahman's thought, how application and implication of this concept in Qur’anic interpretation. Abdullah Saeed developed and formulated the concept hierarchy of values into five levels, including obligatory values, fundamental values, protective values, implementational values, and instructional values. The five hierarchies of values become a complete unified frame as an effort to the contextual interpretation of the Qur’an, especially the ethico-legal verses that mostly fill the daily life of most Muslims based on the understanding of maqashid al-sharia and the concept of good deeds. This study uses a descriptive analysis method and hermeneutic analysis techniques to apply the concept hierarchy of values in the Qur’anic interpretation. The results of this paper are in the contextual interpretation of QS. Al-Hujurat in the 1st-5th verses are instructional value; the 6th and 9th verses are combination of fundamental, protectional and impementational values; the 7th-8th verses and the 14th-18th verses are obligatory value; the 10th verse implementational value; the 11th-13th verses are instructional value. This article describes the state of progressive Qur'anic interpretation studies over the past five years at three State Islamic Higher Education, UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang and UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The article is based on the argument that the study of the progressive interpretation of the Qur'an which is reflected in the issues of social justice, women and gender equality, pluralism, and deradicalization has strong relevance to contemporary issues that are widely discussed by scholars. In addition, it is also the responsibility of Islamic higher education to provide Qur'anic solutions to the contemporary problems. The study focused on three questions, namely: the frequency of progressive interpretation studies, the concentration of progressive interpretation issues, and the development and orientation of progressive interpretation studies. The method used in this study is a literature review of the scientific publications of lecturers in the study of the Koran and the final papers of students majoring in Al-Qur'an and Tafsir. The results showed that the study frequency of progressive Qur'anic interpretation in the three universities in the period 2014 – 2019 was still low, recorded at 18.52%. However, the frequency  of progressive Qur'anic studies in the 2014-2019 period showed an increase of 1.3%. The issues discussed have covered the four issues mentioned above, although some of them have not received enough attention. The orientation of the study is still concentrated on the interpretation of the meaning of the Koran, it has not yet led to a methodological study in building a paradigm and approach to contemporary interpretation. Keywords: progressive exegesis; frequency; issues; development and orientation of the study
