The transitioning of veterans from the military world to the civilian world and by extension the civilian workforce is a critical career transition. Despite their motivation and resilience, veterans still encounter a multiplicity of challenges when transitioning to the civilian workforce, which quite often has a rippling impact on their attainment of employment, job retention, and career development within the civilian sector. An added layer to the transitional challenge for veterans is organizational resistance to promote diversity and inclusion policies and practices, specifically regarding veterans. On this premise, this chapter aims to: 1) Discuss the transitional challenges of veterans to the civilian workforce and 2) Provide implementation strategies at an organizational level to promote diversity and inclusion, specifically regarding veterans.

In 1990, Salovey and Mayer introduced emotional intelligence (EI). Thirty-one years later, a proliferation of interventions to improve people’s EI has taken place. A literature review of studies focused on enhancing the EI of college students revealed a notable gap. When educational material for training sessions included all of the skills in an EI model, researchers usually utilized lengthy durations (i.e., 11–56 h). Few successful investigations employed an ultra-brief (i.e., ≤1 h) approach. The present study examined the feasibility of training using a minimalistic timeframe and a sample of freshmen; their transitional challenges from high school to college mark them as an appropriate target population. Employing a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, the recruited participants (n = 75) experienced an ultra-brief intervention highlighting the complete skill-set in the Ability Emotional Intelligence model. Findings from a one-way repeated measures MANOVA indicated improvement transpired in two of four MSCEIT scores (i.e., perception and facilitation). The merit of the present study is delineated using Orsmond and Cohn’s five objectives for feasibility investigations. In addition, implications of the results and possible applications are proposed.

The study investigated transitional challenges among undergraduate (bachelor of education) sandwich students. Adopting the descriptive survey design, a census population of 651 was used. Sanagavarapu, Abraham and Taylor’s (2018) TWHAS was used for data collection. The data was analysed using frequency counts and MANOVA. The study revealed that 59.6% of the students experienced difficulty in balancing family commitments with studies, 77.4% found it difficult to exercise, 61.0% found it difficult meeting up with friends and 73.3% found it difficult balancing financial commitments. Again, 45.2% of the students rarely experienced misunderstanding, while 25.0% were concerned about what others would say about them, 29.2% were concerned about the language barrier, 75.7% were concerned about their inability to explain their problems but 81.9% were not afraid seeking support from colleagues. More so, females experienced transitional challenges more than males. It is recommended for managers of the programmes to counsel students so as to control the effects of the challenges.

Throughout their K-12 educational experiences, military-connected youth often face a high degree of uncertainty and mobility due to their parent's service. These transitions often create stressors that impact the academic and social-emotional development of children and adolescents from military families. Because of their position and training, school counselors play an important role in addressing the educational needs of military-connected youth. Within this chapter, the author discusses military culture, describes the transitional challenges in which military-connected youth experience and highlights ways in which school counselors can utilize interventions to support this unique population. Recommendations and suggestions for future research are also explored.

The contribution emphasizes research undertaken in highly structured software-intensive organisations and the transitional challenges associated to agile, lean and DevOps practices andprinciples adoption journeys. The approach undertaken to gain insights to research questions resulted in data collected, through a series of interviews, by thirtypractitioners from EMEA region (Czech Republic, Estonia, Italy, Georgia, Greece, The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, UAE, UK) working in ninedifferent industry domains. A set of agile, lean and DevOps practices and principles that organisations are choosing to include in their adoption journeys towardsDevOps-oriented structures is identified. The most frequently adopted practices of structured service management that can contribute to the success of DevOps practices adoption are also identified. Results indicate that software product development andoperations roles in DevOps-oriented organisationscan benefit from specific leadership styles.
