Malaria parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum have exerted formidable selective pressures on the human genome. Of the human genetic variants associated with malaria protection, beta thalassaemia (a haemoglobinopathy) was the earliest to be associated with malaria prevalence. However, the malaria protective properties of beta thalassaemic erythrocytes remain unclear. Here we studied the mechanics and surface protein expression of beta thalassaemia heterozygous erythrocytes, measured their susceptibility to P. falciparum invasion, and calculated the energy required for merozoites to invade them. We found invasion-relevant differences in beta thalassaemic cells versus matched controls, specifically: elevated membrane tension, reduced bending modulus, and higher levels of expression of the major invasion receptor basigin. However, these differences acted in opposition to each other with respect to their likely impact on invasion, and overall we did not observe beta thalassaemic cells to have lower P. falciparum invasion efficiency for any of the strains tested.

The results of experimental studies of the protective properties of titanium hydride with respect to neutron and gamma radiation in order to determine the optimal conditions for their use in the composition of the structural radiation protection of the nuclear reactor are presented. The weakening of the basic functionals in the thickness of protection, including the density of fast, intermediate and thermal neutrons, and the dose rate of gamma radiation is established. The functions of weakening the density of neutron flow and the dose rate of gamma radiation are measured in the conditions of "barrier" geometry. Determination of the protective properties of the structure was carried out when the modified titanium hydride fraction was placed in aluminum containers with a filling coefficient of a volume of container 0.63. The relaxation lengths for all neutron groups are close and on average are 9.8 cm. The functions of weakening the dose rate of gamma radiation of point sources Cs-137 and Co-60 are exponential. The weakening of radiation occurs with a constant relaxation length. For energy 0.661 MeV, the relaxation length is 7.1 cm, for energy 1.25 MeV, the relaxation length is equal to 10.1 cm. On the basis of the experimental studies, the high efficiency of the modified fraction of titanium hydride was confirmed during its use in protecting nuclear power plants.

AbstractMacrophages are integral to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, but the contribution of distinct macrophage subsets to disease remains poorly defined. Using single cell technologies and conditional ablation via a LysMCre+Clec4a2flox/DTR mouse strain, we demonstrate that the expression of the C-type lectin receptor CLEC4A2 is a distinguishing feature of vascular resident macrophages endowed with athero-protective properties. Through genetic deletion and competitive bone marrow chimera experiments, we identify CLEC4A2 as an intrinsic regulator of macrophage tissue adaptation by promoting a bias in monocyte-to-macrophage in situ differentiation towards colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) in vascular health and disease. During atherogenesis, CLEC4A2 deficiency results in loss of resident vascular macrophages and their homeostatic properties causing dysfunctional cholesterol metabolism and enhanced toll-like receptor triggering, exacerbating disease. Our study demonstrates that CLEC4A2 licenses monocytes to join the vascular resident macrophage pool, and that CLEC4A2-mediated macrophage homeostasis is critical to combat cardiovascular disease.

The review is devoted to selective I1-imidazoline-receptor agonists. An analysis of Russian and foreign studies is presented, the results of which indicate that this drug class not only provides adequate and long-term control of blood pressure, but also has a number of favorable metabolic effects. Therefore, it contributes to reducing insulin resistance (weight loss) and has organ protective properties (endothelial function improvement, left ventricular hypertrophy regression, microalbuminuria reduction). At the same time, selective I1-imidazoline-receptor agonists are much less likely to cause side effects characteristic of old-generation sympatholytic agents. This class of drugs is invariably included in Russian guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension.

The article presents a method for obtaining white phosphate coatings on steel by cold method. The deposition of protective phosphate coatings was carried out from solutions based on the preparation “Majef”, consisting of manganese and iron phosphates. To obtain phosphate films of white color, it is proposed to introduce zinc and calcium nitrates into phosphating solutions at the rate of 25–30 g/L. The surface of phosphate coatings was studied using the SolverP47-PRO atomic force microscope images, and the average grain size was determined. The structural and phase composition of phosphate coatings was been studied using X-ray diffraction analysis. The protective properties of phosphate coatings were estimated by corrosion rate indicators calculated from corrosion diagrams. Fine-crystalline uniform coatings were obtained from modified phosphating solutions at room temperature on steel. The white color of phosphate coatings is due to the increased content of phosphophyllite, hopeite, and parascholzite in their structural and phase composition. By applying protective phosphate coatings of white color on a steel product, corrosion can be slowed down by 4–4.5 times. However, white phosphate coatings are inferior in protective properties to unpainted coatings. The index of change in the mass of samples with white phosphate coatings because of corrosion is 0.371–0.41 g/(m2·h), and with unpainted coatings is 0.128 g/(m2·h).

Тo date, the possible links of the pathogenesis of this disease have been well studied and described, which predetermine certain approaches to the treatment of various variants of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Effective drug therapy for GERD includes proton pump inhibitors (PPI). However, PPI monotherapy is not always effective. One approach is to increase the PPI dose. At the same time, combination therapy with the addition of drugs that affect the protective properties of the esophageal mucosa seems to be more rational. It is known that in the development of GERD, the violation of cytoprotection of the esophageal mucosa is one of the key links in pathogenesis. Consequently, the issue of combination therapy of PPIs with drugs that increase the protective properties of the mucous barrier along with acid suppression becomes relevant. An example of such an approach is the  appointment of  rebamipide, the  action of  which is to regulate the  synthesis of  prostaglandins through COX-2  mediated mechanisms, influence on endothelial growth factor, increase the expression of tight intercellular contact proteins in epithelial cells of the mucous membrane, reduce the level of interleukin-8 and free oxygen radicals, directed to protect the mucous membrane of  the  gastrointestinal tract and restore its natural barrier properties. The  effectiveness of  the  combination of  PPI and rebamipide contributes to a greater regression of complaints in patients with GERD and a lower frequency of disease relapses than with PPI monotherapy. This article provides a review of the literature on the features of GERD therapy, primarily with an emphasis on the correction of the cytoprotective properties of the esophageal mucosa, including against the background of the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), and a clinical case analysis with a discussion of rational pharmacological correction.

Abstract. The possibility of obtaining luminous phosphate coatings on steel by cold method has been studied. Modified cold phosphating solutions containing organic additives (glycerin, trilon B, OS-20 emulsifier) were selected as the basis to maintain the pH, stabilize the solution and improve the quality and structure of the deposited coatings. To obtain the glow effect, a green phosphor based on Zn2SiO4 containing manganese as a sensitizer was added to the phosphating solution. During deposition, phosphate coatings are obtained that glow with spots, but constant mixing of the solution during deposition contributes to the uniform distribution of phosphor in the phosphate film. Luminous phosphate coatings have good protective properties, they can be used as an independent protection of steel surfaces from corrosion.

Propolis is a natural mixture of saliva, enzymes and plant secretions which collected by bees from various plants and used for protection of hives against external fac-tors. Biological activities and chemical composition of propolis may vary accor-ding to the plant sources, location and time, and it contains phenolic compo-unds, aromatic acids, essen-tial oils, minerals and vita-mins. Propolis has been used in traditional medicine for various therapeutic pur-poses, and it has a potential as a natural preservative in foods. Propolis may have various protective effects such as reducing microbial growth and oxidation, pre-venting fungus, rotting and weight loss, maintaining product stability and exten-ding shelf life in meat, po-ultry, fish, dairy, vegetables, fruits and fruit juices during storage. However, propolis's unique odor and taste may alter the sensory quality of foods and that may effect its use in the food industry ne-gatively.

Bhallataka (Semecarpus Anacardium) is one of the Rasayana drugs mentioned in Ayurveda. Semecarpus Anacardium plant belongs to the family Anacardiaceae having allergic expressions as contact dermatitis which originates the fear about use in mind but in Ayurveda it have been used since tradition in various diseased conditions like wounds, piles, uncontrolled cell growth, abdominal lumps etc. Despite these conditions it is more likely used as Rasayana for diseased free long life. Rasayana medicines help in rejuvenating the cells and tissues with antioxidant and cyto-protective properties. In Vitro effects of Semecarpus Anacardium extracts Bhallataka has been evaluated pharmacologically on the isolated tissues and the whole animal. The therapeutic effects of the extract are due to its chemical constituents as phenols, glycosides and lipids mainly. The review supports the information on the use of Semecarpus Anacardium extracts in different cancer conditions.
