The article attempts to explore the features of early 21st century Ukrainian poetry for children. The purpose of exploration is to identify the genre and ideographic features of poetry: innovation and traditionalism. Tracing the genre modifications of poetry and their common and distinctive features, the author addresses the key features of poetry for children in general: artistic and literary discourse, the functions of poetry, thematic direction, strophic structure of the poem, the existence of images, characters and others. The article proves that the basis for the renewal of poetic genres is traditional genres of folklore and poetry. There are organically updated folk genres in modern poetry for children (praise, scarecrows, fables, nonsense, counters, patter, games) and newly created genres (poetry-pictures, tricks, coloring books, checks, stumbling blocks, therapeutic poems). The search for new forms of expression of idiosyncrasies of artists leads to the emergence of original genres. These have appeared as an original phenomenon in the Ukrainian literature of the early 21st century and offer a wide scope for further research.

The need to develop a holistic linguistic vision of the functionality of toponyms in the literary discourse dictates the study of these units on the basis of broad artistic materials texts of different genres. The article is devoted to characteristics of toponyms, noted in the novel of Sophia Andrukhovych «Amadoka». The study has revealed that modern fiction manifests an abundant toponym system. The system of toponyms in the novel «Amadoka» is formed by horonyms, oykonyms, urbanonyms, hydronyms, oronyms, and so on. The toponyms carry out the following basic functions: nominative-localized, ideological, and symbolic. First, toponyms in a text actualize their toponymic meaning, structuring a text space. However, toponyms often become ideological-conceptual elements that gain a dominant role in the implementation of the author’s intention, function in the text as symbols, which enables the output of functions of this proper name beyond the limits of the traditional nominative-localization one. They become the means of the indirect features of characters of the novel that are one of the elements of text formation.

The American Girl series is a constantly evolving book series for children featuring the lives of girls living in different historical periods of the US, starting from the colonial era up to nowadays. The aim of this paper is to study the verbal and nonverbal portrayal of the oceanic spaces of the past in the books about the historical characters and their rediscovery in the books about the contemporary characters. An attempt is made to analyse the different roles of oceanic images in stories of migration and mobility of the American Girls, their families, friends, acquaintances both in the past and in the present. The images of the oceans in the books about the historical characters and in those about the contemporary characters are analysed separately and the results are compared and contrasted. It is assumed that the oceans which are depicted both verbally and nonverbally in the American Girl series have become not only territorial borders for some of the characters but also metaphoric ones.

The article highlights the impact of globalization processes on formation of dominant worldviews and guidelines, as well as ways and means of representing the latter. The state and prospects of studying intertextuality as an important element of modern world discourses in the projection on the national cultural background are studied. Attention is drawn to the high degree of development of both theoretical and applied aspects of intertextuality of discourses by representatives of academic communities of different countries and fields of knowledge, which gave grounds to establish the polydiscursive and interdiscursive nature of the object of analysis. Orientation of domestic experts on parameterization of mainly specific manifestations of intertextuality within certain discourses at the level of isolated intertexts and presence of gaps in the theoretical description of the phenomenon in the context of national specificity is stated. Emphasis is placed on the definite variability of the terminology due to the interdisciplinary nature of discursiveness and, accordingly, intertextuality. A complementary link has been established between postmodernism as the dominant philosophical worldview and the intertextuality of discourses. The specifics of the intertextuality of contemporary Ukrainian literary discourse with regard to various scientific studies are clarified. The concept of “intertextual memory” is introduced and justification of its use is given. The need to apply the term “postmodern intertextuality” in relation to contemporary literary discourse is considered. The common and distinctive features of the manifestation of intertextuality in literary and journalistic discourses are traced. The specifics of intertextuality of Ukrainian journalistic discourse are described. It is established that the precedent character of the communicative act is of exceptional importance for realization of intertextuality in journalistic discourse.

Classified among the short story-romance stream of Wacław Potocki’s works, Syloret occupies an important place in the poet’s epic legacy. Throughout the extensive digressive parts of this work, Lusatia-based writer spins erudite reflections on the nature of the world, the human condition, the essence of human fate, and explicates the thoughts of ancient philosophers (e.g. Seneca). Potocki turns to philosophical theories – above all to Christianised stoicism (neostoicism), which becomes the proper subject of his literary discourse. In the article the author undertakes research on the most important concepts of Stoic ethics (fortune, nature, virtue), to which the poet refers in his romance poem. An attempt is also made to answer the question of the seventeenth-century author’s use of an extensive characterisation of the principles of this philosophy.

The article is devoted to the study of Abay's creativity as a historical precedent personality in the context of his ethnopedagogical, historical and translation discourses. Purpose of the work: identifying the essence of Abay's main discourses, analyzing them, determining the contribution of the precedent personality to the historical process of the formation of ethno-identity, as well as clarifying the degree of precedence of the personality and his texts. In the process of analysis, a complex method was used, based on the combination of discursive-historical, cognitive-discursive, and pragmatic-communicative approaches, the method of sociological survey. The results obtained include: description of Abay as a precedent historical personality, widely known for his legislative, social and political activities; a comprehensive analysis of the historical discourse of Abay, the discourse of biy (in Kazakh language), its extralinguistic, cognitive, pragmatic, linguo-stylistic components have been identified and described; the historical character of Abay's translation discourses is established, a comprehensive analysis of such a discourse is carried out, the precedent of the text of Abay's translations is noted. It is concluded that Abay Kunanbaev not only acted as an active historical person who managed to influence the actualization of historical events and their promotion, but also as a poet, translator, who created various discourses (historical, translation, literary). Abay's translation discourse acts as a kind of historical discourse - historical and literary discourse, since it has signs of historicity (created by a historical person, it reflects the features of the historical era). Therefore, these discourses can be analyzed based on a complex discursive-historical and cognitive-discursive approaches.

The article is devoted to the mystical manifesto The Last Day (1963) of the Lebanese novelist, playwright and journalist Mikhail Naimy (1889–1988). The author suggests that Naimy, under the spell of classical Russian literature, attempted an audacious experiment: by successfully combining the totality of concepts of Dostoevsky’s The Dream of a Ridiculous Man [ Son smeshnogo cheloveka] with the traditional mythologemes of Sufi poetry, this graduate of the Poltava theological seminary overcomes mystical imagery, and in doing so postulates human impotence in the face of the Nietzschean ‘eternal recurrence’ and the ineffable nature of true the ophanies. The article demonstrates the innovative character of The Last Day, a novel that stands apart from the works of other Pen League members: while Gibran’s The Prophet seeks to infantilise a religious myth, Naimy’s objective is to bring mythology back into the 20th-c. Middle Eastern literary discourse and reimagine it using the categories of contemporary existential philosophy. The study opens with a short biography, covering Naimy’s Russian and American periods.

Translation of English passive constructions into Vietnamese has been of interest to scholars and researchers worldwide. However, not much research has been done into translation equivalence of the English passives in Vietnamese. This paper aims to explore into the translation equivalence of English passive constructions in Vietnamese in literary discourse. To reach this aim, data were collected from classic works of American and English literature and their translations in Vietnamese. The data were further analysed and classified, applying Widdowson’s (1979) trichotomy of translation equivalence. The research findings show five strategies for translating the English passives into Vietnamese with this order of frequency: activization, passivization, ergativization, adjectivalization, and copularization, and the translation equivalence includes both structural and semantic. The paper also attempts to explain the reasons behind the preference of activization strategy.

We propose, in this article, to use a sociopoetic approach, in order to identify the representations of disability through various characters in two contemporary French-Canadian novels. We have studied the poetical processes at work, and especially how the authors use artistic creation and production, in order to question and overturn the existing prejudices dehumanizing people with disabilities. In both novels, Homme invisible à la fenêtre by Monique Proulx (1993) and Un jour ils entendront mes silences by Marie-Josée Martin (2012), the literary discourse constitutes a radical questioning of how disability is perceived, of how and why people with disabilities are being dehumanized, medicalised, and of our understanding of what constitutes “able” and “disabled”.
