The demand for electricity is increasing day by day due to technological advancements. According to the demand, the size of the grid is also increasing rapidly in the past decade. However, the traditional centralized power grid has many drawbacks such as high operating cost, customer satisfaction, less reliability, and security. Distribution generation has less pollution, high energy efficiency, and flexible installation than traditional generation. It also improves the performance of the grid in peak load and reliability of supply. The concept of micro-grid has been raised due to the advent of new technologies and development of the power electronics and modern control theory. Micro-grid is the significant part of the distribution network in the future of smart grid, which has advanced and flexible operation and control pattern, and integrates distributed clean energy.

There is a surge in the total energy demand of the world due to the increase in the world’s population and the ever-increasing human dependence on technology. Conventional non-renewable energy sources still contribute a larger amount to the total energy production. Due to their greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution, the substitution of these sources with renewable energy sources (RES) is desired. However, RES, such as wind energy, are uncertain, intermittent, and unpredictable. Hence, there is a need to optimize their usage when they are available. This can be carried out through a flexible operation of a microgrid system with the power grid to gradually reduce the contribution of the conventional sources in the power system using energy storage systems (ESS). To integrate the RES in a cost-effective approach, the ESS must be optimally sized and operated within its safe limitations. This study, therefore, presents a flexible method for the optimal sizing and operation of battery ESS (BESS) in a wind-penetrated microgrid system using the butterfly optimization (BO) algorithm. The BO algorithm was utilized for its simple and fast implementation and for its ability to obtain global optimization parameters. In the formulation of the optimization problem, the study considers the depth of discharge and life-cycle of the BESS. Simulation results for three different scenarios were studied, analyzed, and compared. The resulting optimized BESS connected scenario yielded the most cost-effective strategy among all scenarios considered.

Abstract Motivation The metabolome and microbiome disorders are highly associated with human health and there are great demands for dual-omics interaction analysis. Here, we designed and developed an integrative platform, 3MCor, for metabolome and microbiome correlation analysis under the instruction of phenotype and with the consideration of confounders. Results Many traditional and novel correlation analysis methods were integrated for intra- and inter-correlation analysis. Three inter-correlation pipelines are provided for global, hierarchical, and pairwise analysis. The incorporated network analysis function is conducive to rapid identification of network clusters and key nodes from a complicated correlation network. Complete numerical results (csv files) and rich figures (pdf files) will be generated in minutes. To our knowledge, 3MCor is the first platform developed specifically for the correlation analysis of metabolome and microbiome. Its functions were compared with corresponding modules of existing omics data analysis platforms. A real-world data set was used to demonstrate its simple and flexible operation, comprehensive outputs, and distinctive contribution to dual-omics studies. Availability 3MCor is available at http://3mcor.cn and the backend R script is available at https://github.com/chentianlu/3MCorServer. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO2R) is an emerging technology that is capable of producing various organic chemicals from CO2, but its high electricity cost is a big economic obstacle. One solution to reduce the cumulative electricity cost is demand side management, i.e., to adjust the power load based on time-variant electricity prices. However, varying the power load of CO2-electrolyzers often leads to changes in Faraday efficiency towards target components and thereby influences the product composition. Such deviations from the target product composition may be undesired for downstream processes. We tackle this challenge by proposing a flexible operating scheme for a modular eCO2R process. We formulate the economically optimal operation of an eCO2R process with multiple electrolyzer stacks as a parallel-machine scheduling problem. Adjusting the power load of each sub-process properly, we can save electricity costs while the desired product composition is met at any time. We apply an algorithm based on wavelet transform to solve the resulting large-scale nonlinear scheduling problem in tractable time. We solve each optimization problem with a deterministic global optimization software MAiNGO. We examine flexible operation of a modular eCO2R process for syngas production. The case studies show that the modular structure enables savings in the cumulative electricity cost of the eCO2R process via flexible operation while deviations in the syngas composition could be reduced. Also, the maximum ramping speed of the entire process is found to be a key parameter that strongly influences the cost saving.

DC micro-energy system is an effective pattern to integrate high-penetration distribution generators. It has flexible operation modes and complicated fault characteristics, which requires protection with higher selectivity and sensitivity. This paper proposes a DC feeder protection method using the transient high-frequency currents. The fault direction and fault feeder are identified by comparing the amplitude of high-frequency currents of all ends. The amplitude ratio coefficient of DC voltages is introduced to detect the fault pole. The transient high-frequency components will not be affected by the communication delay and fault impedance. The protection scheme realizes the fast detection and clearance of different faults on feeders before the failure of the inverter-interfaced generators and loads, which ensure the reliable and safe operation of the non-fault zone. The model of a DC micro-energy system is established in MATLAB/Simulink and the efficiency of this method is verified by detailed simulations.

Efficient and flexible operation is essential for competitiveness in the energy market. However, the CO2 emissions of conventional power plants have become an increasingly significant environmental dilemma. In this study, the optimization of a steam power process of an IGCC was carried out, which improved the overall performance of the plant. CCPP with a subcritical HRSG was modelled using EBSILON Professional. The numerical results of the model were validated by measurements for three different load cases (100, 80, and 60%). The results are in agreement with the measured data, with deviations of less than 5% for each case. Based on the model validation, the model was modified for the use of syngas as feed and the integration of heat into an IGCC process. The integration was optimized with respect to the performance of the CCPP by varying the extraction points, adjusting the steam parameters of the extractions and modifying the steam cycle. For the 100% load case, a steam turbine power achieved increase of +34.2%. Finally, the optimized model was subjected to a sensitivity analysis to investigate the effects of varying the extraction mass flows on the output.
