As well as a design process, experimental practices in architectural education are associated with the analytical approaches of visual thinking and visual reasoning. The main purpose of this study was to explore creative methods for devising a vertical construction through visual reasoning. In terms of experimental practices, design research is based on exploration while the primary research area in architecture is reframed by constantly renewed approaches. Accordingly, the hypothesis of this study was that creative methods would improve when the creation of a vertical construction in architectural education is nourished by visual stimuli. The study searched for a construction that plasticized the vertical spatiality of Sivas Grand Mosque’s minaret. The method was shaped by a prerequisite dialogue that rests on visual stimuli. The expected outcome of this dialogue was that the minaret as a pure form would be subjected to an abstraction and, a design proposal then developed for its current structural problems. The results indicated a two-fold appreciation of design. First, when the minaret was maintained within the idea of stabilization rather than being construed as a pure form, the search for a creative method of vertical construction was handled in the context of static preservation. Second, when Sivas Grand Mosque’s minaret as an imaginary design tool was construed as a pure form and the abstraction level increased through visual reasoning, the outcomes gradually demonstrated an approach akin to experimental practices

Animal telemetry is a subject of great potential and scientific interest, but it shows design-dependent problems related to price, flexibility and customization, autonomy, integration of elements, and structural design. The objective of this paper is to provide solutions, from the application of design, to cover the niches that we discovered by reviewing the scientific literature and studying the market. The design process followed to achieve the objective involved a development based on methodologies and basic design approaches focused on the human experience and also that of the animal. We present a modular collar that distributes electronic components in several compartments, connected, and powered by batteries that are wirelessly recharged. Its manufacture is based on 3D printing, something that facilitates immediacy in adaptation and economic affordability. The modularity presented by the proposal allows for adapting the size of the modules to the components they house as well as selecting which specific modules are needed in a project. The homogeneous weight distribution is transferred to the comfort of the animal and allows for a better integration of the elements of the collar. This device substantially improves the current offer of telemetry devices for farming animals, thanks to an animal-centered design process.

UNSTRUCTURED In the 21st century, the internet and particularly social media have become essential platforms for the spread of health information (and disinformation). One of the distinguishing features of communication on these platforms is the widespread use of emojis. Though seemingly trivial, emojis are now used by many if not most public health figures and organizations alongside important health updates. Much of that information has had to do with vaccination. Vaccines are a critical public health tool but one surrounded by falsehoods and phobias, especially in the time of COVID-19. Part of that has to do with their lack of positive representation on social media: the syringe emoji is a plain needle which for many people is an uncomfortable image. We thus argue that vaccination deserves an entirely new emoji, and discuss a design proposal for a vaccinated emoji that has gained traction in the global public health community.

An overview is provided of the manner in which hydrodynamic and hullform-related design considerations were addressed in the development of the BAE SYSTEMS team’s design proposal for the UK Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF). It also outlines how broader design considerations such as aviation, survivability and supportability requirements influenced these aspects of the design. A summary is also provided of some of the more detailed requirements development, option assessment and performance evaluation work that has been undertaken. The aircraft carrier designs discussed in this paper correspond to the BAE SYSTEMS team’s final design submission as it stood in January 2003, at the time it was discontinued by the UK Ministry of Defence, in favour of the rival Thales / BMT team design that has since been developed into the UK Royal Navy’s new ‘Queen Elizabeth’ class aircraft carrier. This final BAE SYSTEMS design submission consisted of two distinct design variants - one configured to operate a CTOL-based air group, the other configured to accommodate a STOVL air group. Both variants were based on a common ‘core’ ship design. The discussion presented in this paper is applicable to both variants.

Shipbuilding is an increasingly competitive field. As the key players in this activity, shipyard managers have to make their counterparts in related industries aware of two conflicting needs. On the one hand, they must produce high quality components that are technologically advanced. On the other, they need equipment that lets them build vessels at a reasonable price. With this second aim in mind, it would be useful to standardise both design and manufacturing processes. At the same time, ship owners always impose regulations. The manufacturers of deck equipment must therefore adapt their product designs to comply with these regulations, some of which have aspects in common. However, guidelines also differ on many points. This makes it difficult to reach desirable levels of standardisation in equipment design. The situation can be summed up in a phrase: for each vessel, a specific design. This article will first provide a comparative overview of current legislation. A proposal for anchor windlass design is then presented in an attempt to make the various regulations more cohesive. The objective here is to reach an acceptable degree of standardisation and, consequently, lower costs by applying economies of scale.

<p>I am interested in the synergy between art and architecture. Art is typically graphic and architecture is typically spatial. This research investigates how an exploration of both graphic and spatial techniques might inform architecture.  I explore this synergy between graphic and spatial within the context of Hataitai, Wellington. This suburb has the opportunity to grow, physically and socially. This research proposes a Continuing Education Centre that promotes a new cultural hub. This proposal responds to the suburb’s car-dependent nature and aims to enhance Hataitai’s cultural resilience  What graphic and spatial opportunities does architecture offer to improve pedestrian infrastructure and enhance cultural resilience?  I use the design proposal as a vehicle to investigate how art-led experimentation could influence the architectural language and design. I use printmaking as a creative starting point to explore the possibilities of art-led experimentation. From the prints, I investigate the ambiguity of depth and flatness, I then develop experimentation through physical modelling, hand drawing and digital modelling. The resulting design expands a weakly-defined pedestrian network and enriches the cultural fabric through an architectural language that explores both spatial and graphic overlaps.</p>

<p>In New Zealand, our residential architecture is built off the pragmatic approach of the instinctive farmer, and the desire to dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape. In the search to create the dream home, many have packed up their beach houses to setup camp in the alpine environment surrounding Queenstown, causing the population and construction demand in the area to rise rapidly. As a result the building’s thermal envelope is put under pressure to perform both pragmatically and poetically as it faces one of New Zealand’s most extreme environments to live in. However, when put into action a pragmatic approach, to create a warm, dry and healthy home, often confronts conflict with a poetic approach that priorities the building’s relationship with the landscape through high amounts of glazing to dissolve the boundary.  In response, ‘Climate Conscience for Dwelling Design’ focused on the potential to exceed the minimum thermal envelope requirements, whilst actively engaging with the relationship between architecture and its environment. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to explore the dialectic between pragmatic and poetic approaches to design. The theoretical framework, background research and a systematic investigation into design precedents aided in sculpting a series of strategies and criteria that were refined throughout the design process. A series of cabins simulated and tested the strengths and weaknesses of the methodology and early design investigations to streamline the overall design investigation.  The developed design proposal builds off the aesthetic of an external structure to integrate the building with in its landscape, whilst removing the load-bearing requirements from the building’s thermal envelope. As a result the predicted amount of heating energy was reduced. The process of resolving the design continued to constructively build off both poetic and pragmatic approaches to develop critical building elements to the appearance, experience and performance. As a speculative and simulated design, it hopes to become an example of how much potential there is for designers and architects to push boundaries with aesthetic and performance-based design decisions.</p>
