In general, modern operating systems can be divided into two essential parts, real-time operating systems (RTOS) and general-purpose operating systems (GPOS). The main difference between GPOS and RTOS is the system istime-critical or not. It means that; in GPOS, a high-priority thread cannot preempt a kernel call. But, in RTOS, a low-priority task is preempted by a high-priority task if necessary, even if it’s executing a kernel call. Most Linux distributions can be used as both GPOS and RTOS with kernel modifications. In this study, two Linux distributions, Ubuntu and Pardus, were analyzed and their performances were compared both as GPOS and RTOS for path planning of the multi-robot systems. Robot groups with different numbers of members were used to perform the path tracking tasks using both Ubuntu and Pardus as GPOS and RTOS. In this way, both the performance of two different Linux distributions in robotic applications were observed and compared in two forms, GPOS, and RTOS.

In view of the low formation redundancy in the traditional rigid formation algorithm and its difficulty in dynamically adapting to the external environment, this study considers the use of the CVT (centroidal Voronoi tessellation) algorithm to control multiple robots to form the desired formation. This method significantly increases the complexity of the multi-robot system, its structural redundancy, and its internal carrying capacity. First, we used the CVT algorithm to complete the Voronoi division of the global map, and then changed the centroid position of the Voronoi cell by adjusting the density function. When the algorithm converged, it could ensure that the position of the generated point was the centroid of each Voronoi cell and control the robot to track the position of the generated point to form the desired formation. The use of traditional formations requires less consideration of the impact of the actual environment on the health of robots, the overall mission performance of the formation, and the future reliability. We propose a health optimization management algorithm based on minor changes to the original framework to minimize the health loss of robots and reduce the impact of environmental restrictions on formation sites, thereby improving the robustness of the formation system. Simulation and robot formation experiments proved that the CVT algorithm could control the robots to quickly generate formations, easily switch formations dynamically, and solve the formation maintenance problem in obstacle scenarios. Furthermore, the health optimization management algorithm could maximize the life of unhealthy robots, making the formation more robust when performing tasks in different scenarios.

Abstract This work presents a framework for multi-robot tour guidance in a partially known environment with uncertainty, such as a museum. In the proposed centralized multi-robot planner, a simultaneous matching and routing problem (SMRP) is formulated to match the humans with robot guides according to their selected points of interest and generate the routes and schedules for the robots according to uncertain spatial and time estimation. A large neighborhood search algorithm is developed to find sub-optimal low-cost solutions for the SMRP efficiently. The scalability and optimality of the multi-robot planner are first evaluated computationally under different environment sizes and numbers of humans and robots. Then, a photo-realistic multi-robot simulation platform was developed based on Habitat-AI to verify the tour guiding performance in an uncertain indoor environment. Results demonstrate that the proposed centralized tour planner is scalable, makes a smooth tradeoff in the plans under different environmental constraints, and can lead to robust performance with inaccurate uncertainty estimations (within a certain margin).
