Background: The increase in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia has resulted in changes in the hospital workflow, including the staffing process and scheduling, especially in the isolation units. Nurse managers are working hard in the scheduling system to ensure high-quality care is provided with the best human resources. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurse managers in managing staff nurses’ work schedules during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used in this study. Eleven nurse managers from three COVID-19 referral hospitals were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using online semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis, and data were presented using a thematic tree. Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist was used as a reporting guideline of the study. Results: Four themes were developed: (i) Nurse shortage, (ii) Strategically looking for ways to fulfill the workforce, (iii) Change of shift schedule, and (iv) Expecting guidance from superiors and compliance from staff. Conclusion: The lack of nurse staff is a problem during a pandemic. Thus, managing personnel effectively, mobilizing and rotating, and recruiting volunteers are strategies to fulfill the workforce during the pandemic. Using a sedentary shift pattern and sufficient holidays could prevent nurses from falling ill and increase compliance with scheduling. In addition, a staffing calculation formula is needed, and top nursing managers are suggested to provide guidance or direction to the head nurses to reduce confusion in managing the work schedule during the pandemic.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of nursing managers about adopting nursing practices based on the Internet of Things and to examine related ethical issues. Questionnaires were sent to 538 nursing managers in Japan, with 131 responses. Of these, 87% and 33% agreed that a system using radio frequency identifiers would be useful for locating patients and nurses, respectively, 58%–81% recognized the value for patient safety of various camera systems for nursing observation, such as cameras linked to biometric alarms, 73% agreed the usefulness of automatically prioritizing alarms, but only around 39% were in favor of using facial recognition to help nursing observation. Many nursing managers expressed concerns about privacy. Data storage for at least 6 months was supported by 53% for location data and 41% for ceiling camera videos. Thus, nursing practice based on the Internet of Things is widely accepted in Japan.

Background: One of the nurse’s roles is to provide nursing care regards of patient safety, consistently and timely.  The availability of nurses and equipment can be considered as a primary constraint contributing to acute missed nursing care.Aims: This study aimed to determine the correlation between the availability of nurses and equipment with incidences of acute missed nursing care in medical and surgical wards at hospitals.Methods: This study used quantitative research with a cross sectional approach. This research was conducted at six private hospitals in Malang from October 2020 to November 2020. The population in this study were selected using consecutive sampling, and the study sample consisted of 206 nurses. The acute MISSCARE Survey was used to collect data. The relationship between the availability of the number of nurses and equipment with acute missed nursing care was analyzed by applying SPSS version 26 with the Spearman test.Results: The relationship between the availability of nurses and acute missed nursing care yielded results of ρ = 0.016 (<0.05) and R = -0.168. Equipment availability and acute missed nursing care had values of ρ = 0.026 (<0.05), and R = -0.155.  This shows correlation between the availability of the number of nurses and equipment with incidences of acute missed nursing care.Conclusion: The availability of the number of nurses and equipment are the reasons for the incidence of acute missed nursing care. Therefore, nursing managers are needed in managing and allocating the necessary number of nurses and equipment.Keywords: equipment, missed nursing care, nurse

Background: Reporting patient safety incidents is important to improve patient safety and quality of care. Barriers to report patient safety incidents in nursing may occur due to lack of knowledge and unscheduled as well as low reporting rates. Unfortunately, nurses’ experiences in reporting patient safety incidents have not been comprehensively reviewed.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore nurses’ experiences of reporting patient safety incidents in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.Methods: A descriptive phenomenological approach was used to identify, analyze and describe the experiences of 15 nurses in reporting patient safety incidents.  Nurses having worked for more than two years, not on leave, not being infected with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, and not having a structural position were purposively recruited. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and voice recordings. The collected data were then transcribed verbatim, and thematic analysis was applied for data analysis.Results: Four main themes were found in this study, which included: (1) Priority and responsibility for services, (2) Barriers to incident reporting, (3) Learning for nurses, and (4) Support for nurses.Conclusion: The nurses experience of in reporting safety incidents is still constrained by several obstacles. It is hoped that health care organizations need to provide appropriate strategies to enhance the safety incident reporting efforts made by nurses. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that health service organizations disseminate the use of safety incident reporting forms and assist nursing managers to their subordinates by conducting supervision and motivation related to incident reporting on a scheduled and continuous basis.

Nursing as a service area, is very labor-intensive, making nursing management particularly challenging due to the diverse experiences and educational backgrounds of employees in health care settings. Types of work, as well as workers, challenge nursing managers to create the type of environment that facilitates quality nursing practice. The nurse manager has specific responsibilities for the hospital and the staff. Staffs, in turn, have responsibilities towards both the organization and the manager. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of nurses’ performance using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method and the Rating Scale method at the Royal Prima Hospital, Medan. This research is a descriptive-analytic study. The study was conducted from April to August 2020 at the Royal Prima Hospital Medan. The number of samples is 50 people. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the performance of nurses using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method and the Rating Scale at the Royal Prima Hospital Medan in 2020. The results of the multivariate test can be seen that the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is the most influential. is a quantity. In the Rating Scale method, the most influential is quality. It is hoped that prioritization can be made to conduct a performance review to identify existing weaknesses so that improvements can be made continuously continuous for all services. To understand the perception of nurses in quality management of nursing care at a public health institution in Brazil. Qualitative research was carried out with participation of 18 nurses. Conducted with an interview, open questions with independent variables: characterization of professionals and outcome (perception of quality management, before - 1st phase - and after - 2nd phase - the intervention). Data organized with the help of ATLAS.ti software, Bardin analysis, with the theme “Delivery of value” in the first phase and the theme “Quality indicators focusing on delivering results” in the second phase. The third theme, “Management of care”, in 2 phases. Results showed that the perception of nursing managers about quality management varied between the first and second phases. Considering the revelations about scarce knowledge about quality management, we point out the need to carry out training with a health management approach focused on the management of the quality of care.

BackgroundApplying the principles and skills of management, including planning, organising and leadership skills, will greatly help to improve the quality of nursing manager duties. This is even more important during crisis management, such as the COVID-19 crisis. The objective of the present study was to express the experiences of nursing managers in the COVID-19 crisis.MethodsA qualitative conventional content analysis approach was used to discover the nursing leadership style in the COVID-19 crisis. The present study was conducted in one hospital in Tehran, Iran. 20 Iranian nursing managers in all nursing management positions such as head nurse, matron and supervisor were interviewed. Semi-structured interview was conducted at one hospital in Iran, using reflective and open-ended questions. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. The study was carried out in 2020 while data saturation occurred, no new categories or codes have emerged and the study questions were answered. Credibility and conformability were established through member checking. The report of the analysis was returned to the participants in order to get the assurance that the researchers had portrayed their real world in codes and extracted categories.ResultsFour main themes emerged from data analysis including ‘managers as role model’, ‘full responsiveness’, ‘being in constant challenge’ and ‘post disaster growth’.ConclusionNursing management is one of the activities that the manager must be constantly aware of the activities of his subset. This requires a constant presence in the workplace and communication with nursing staff. Also, in times of crisis, the manager, in addition to having scientific ability, must also have sufficient experience. These two factors will lead to crisis management. Also, training staff and managers in crisis management is one of the most important issues in nursing management.

Abstract Background Considering cancer death is second only to accidental death in the number of lives claimed each year,nurses in paediatric oncology wards often experience helplessness, sadness, frustration and such other adverse emotions when they witness children’s death due to cancer.However,there is a lack of qualitative studies on nurses who witness the death of children in paediatric oncology wards in China. Method A qualitative study was conducted using a semi-structured interview guide with 22 paediatric oncology ward nurses. Interviews were recorded and simultaneously translated and transcribed. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Results The analysis resulted in the identification of three main thematic categories: Different emotional expression, Different copingstrategies, A weak support system. Nursing managers should pay attention to problems faced by nurses in paediatric oncology wards, and take targeted measures in terms of continuing training courses, improving the psychological adaptability of oncology professional nurses, and providing them substantive support. Conclusion Nurses in paediatric oncology wards have strong stress responses to facing the death of children. They reported experiencing complex psychological feelings and have different coping attitudes. Healthcare authorities should recognise and understand the needs of paediatric oncology ward nurses, who often witness the death of children. Appropriate and effective support measures should be planned and implemented for these nurses to maintain their mental health, thus enabling them to better serve patients.

Introduction: Ethical decision-making by nursing managers is influenced by various essential factors, such as courage, without which it is impossible to act on them. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of nursing managers about courage in ethical decision-making. Materials and Methods: The current study was conducted in Iran by a qualitative content analysis approach in 2018. Nineteen nurse managers were selected purposefully from hospitals in Tehran and Shahrekord cities. Data were collected using semi-structured, in-depth, face-to-face interviews, and after transcription, they were analyzed according to the Graneheim and Lundman method. Results: Based on data analysis, we extracted 2 categories (obligation, decisiveness) and 8 subcategories (clearness in expressing decisions, the ability of the manager to make decisions in critical and complex situations, authority/decision-making as a religious responsibility, follow the decision process, being responsible, making compensatory decisions, making preventive decisions). Conclusion: The findings showed that managers who are committed to ethical decision-making have enough assertiveness to make the decisions. Educating, empowering, and sensitizing managers and enhancing their insight into ethical issues through problem-solving and role-playing techniques can play an essential role in promoting their commitment and responsibility.
