It is desirable to include more controllable attributes to enhance the diversity of generated responses in open-domain dialogue systems. However, existing methods can generate responses with only one controllable attribute or lack a flexible way to generate them with multiple controllable attributes. In this paper, we propose a Progressively trained Hierarchical Encoder-Decoder (PHED) to tackle this task. More specifically, PHED deploys Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (CVAE) on Transformer to include one aspect of attributes at one stage. A vital characteristic of the CVAE is to separate the latent variables at each stage into two types: a global variable capturing the common semantic features and a specific variable absorbing the attribute information at that stage. PHED then couples the CVAE latent variables with the Transformer encoder and is trained by minimizing a newly derived ELBO and controlled losses to produce the next stage's input and produce responses as required. Finally, we conduct extensive evaluations to show that PHED significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art neural generation models and produces more diverse responses as expected.

AbstractThe main purpose of this study is to clarify the Hyers–Ulam stability (HUS) for the Cayley quantum equation. In addition, the result obtained for all parameters is applied to HUS of h-difference equations with a specific variable coefficient using a new transformation.

AbstractThe core gut microbiome of adult honeybee comprises a set of recurring bacterial phylotypes, accompanied by lineage-specific, variable, and less abundant environmental bacterial phylotypes. Several mutual interactions and functional services to the host, including the support provided for growth, hormonal signaling, and behavior, are attributed to the core and lineage-specific taxa. By contrast, the diversity and distribution of the minor environmental phylotypes and fungal members in the gut remain overlooked. In the present study, we hypothesized that the microbial components of forager honeybees (i.e., core bacteria, minor environmental phylotypes, and fungal members) are compartmentalized along the gut portions. The diversity and distribution of such three microbial components were investigated in the context of the physico-chemical conditions of different gut compartments. We observed that changes in the distribution and abundance of microbial components in the gut are consistently compartment-specific for all the three microbial components, indicating that the ecological and physiological interactions among the host and microbiome vary with changing physico-chemical and metabolic conditions of the gut.

In this paper, the models of Euler–Bernoulli beams on the Winkler foundations are considered. The novelty of the research is in consideration of the models with an arbitrary variable coefficient of foundation. Qualitative results that influence the symmetry of the coefficient of foundation on the spectral properties of the corresponding problems are obtained, for which specific variable coefficients of foundation are tested using numerical calculations. Three types of fixing at the ends are studied: clamped-clamped, hinged-hinged and free-free. The conditions of the stiffness and types of beam fixing have been found for the set of eigenvalues of boundary value problems on a full segment and can be represented as two groups of the eigenvalues of certain problems on a half segment. Such qualitative spectral properties of a mechanical system can contribute to the creation of various algorithms for nondestructive testing, which are widely used in technical acoustics.

Uninitialized variables have been a source of errors since the beginning of software engineering. Some programming languages (e.g. Java and Python) will automatically zero-initialize such variables, but others, like C and C++, leave their state undefined. While laying aside initialization in C and C++ might be a performance advantage if an initial value can't be supplied, working with such variables is an undefined behavior, and is a common source of instabilities and crashes. To avoid such errors, whenever meaningful initialization is possible, it should be used. Tools for detecting these errors run time have existed for decades, but those require the problematic code to be executed. Since in many cases the number of possible execution paths are combinatoric, static analysis techniques emerged as an alternative. In this paper, we overview the technique for detecting uninitialized C++ variables using the Clang Static Analyzer, and describe various heuristics to guess whether a specific variable was left in an undefined state intentionally. We implemented a prototype tool based on our idea and successfully tested it on large open source projects.

Abstract Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq) is used to identify genome-wide DNA regions bound by proteins. Given one ChIP-seq experiment with replicates, binding sites not observed in all the replicates will usually be interpreted as noise and discarded. However, the recent discovery of high-occupancy target (HOT) regions suggests that there are regions where binding of multiple transcription factors can be identified. To investigate ChIP-seq variability, we developed a reproducibility score and a method that identifies cell-specific variable regions in ChIP-seq data by integrating replicated ChIP-seq experiments for multiple protein targets on a particular cell type. Using our method, we found variable regions in human cell lines K562, GM12878, HepG2, MCF-7 and in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). These variable-occupancy target regions (VOTs) are CG dinucleotide rich, and show enrichment at promoters and R-loops. They overlap significantly with HOT regions, but are not blacklisted regions producing non-specific binding ChIP-seq peaks. Furthermore, in mESCs, VOTs are conserved among placental species suggesting that they could have a function important for this taxon. Our method can be useful to point to such regions along the genome in a given cell type of interest, to improve the downstream interpretative analysis before follow-up experiments.

Abstract Forward guidance can be provided as an unconditional promise, i.e. commitment to a specific low policy rate. Alternatively, the promise may include an escape clause, i.e. a condition defining the state of the economy under which the central bank would not keep such a low rate and, instead, it would revert to setting policy under discretion. The escape clause can be expressed as a threshold in terms of a specific variable. The present paper shows that, when such a threshold is expressed in terms of an endogenous variable (e.g. output, inflation), there are cases where it becomes impossible for the central bank to act in a way that is consistent with its promise. Consistency imposes limits on the policy rate that can be set since reverting immediately to the optimal discretionary rate can be incompatible with exceeding the threshold.
