Intrinsic and dandelion-like microflower nano-rod structures of boron-doped ZnO thin films were synthesized with an ecofriendly and cost-effective chemical bath deposition technique from an aqueous solution of zinc nitrate hexahdyrate [Zn(NO3)2.6H2O] as a precursor solution and boric acid as a doping solution. The boron concentrations were 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.0 by volume. Scanning electron micrographs showed that doping with boron appears to hinder the vertical alignment of crystallites. Additionally, independent hexagonal nano-rod structures were observed to coalesce together to form dandelion-like structures on the film’s surface. The atomic ratio of the elements was determined via the X-ray photoemission spectrum technique. There were no substantial changes in the vibration structure of the film upon doping in terms of the Raman spectra. The optical band gap of ZnO (3.28 eV) decreased with B doping. The band gap of the ZnO:B film varied between 3.18 and 3.22 eV. The activation energy of the ZnO was calculated as 0.051 eV, whereas that of the ZnO:B film containing 1.0% B was calculated as 0.013 eV at low temperatures (273–348 K), versus 0.072 eV and 0.183 eV at high temperatures (348–523 K), respectively. Consequently, it can be interpreted that the 1% B-doped ZnO, which has the lowest activation energy at both low and high temperatures, may find some application areas such as in sensors for gases and in solar cells.

The aim of the present work is to compare the interlaminar shear strength and fracture toughness of glued carbon fiber rods obtained using different experimental approaches and provide the effective way to characterise the interlaminar properties for reliable simulation of the delamination. Five different test methods (tension, single shear test, and double shear test, mode I and mode II delamination tests) were performed. Using the explicit LS-DYNA code the finite element model capable of simulating the damage process of bonded connection was developed. The interlaminar connection and delamination criteria were calibrated using the parameter identification methodology implemented in LS-OPT optimization tool.

The article deals with shaping effective curvilinear steel rod roof structures using genetic algorithms by implementing them for the analysis of various case studies in order to find new and efficient structures with positive characteristics. The structures considered in this article are created on the basis of the Enneper surface and minimal surfaces stretched on four arcs. On the Enneper surface, a single layer grid is used, while on the other surfaces, two-layer ones. The Enneper form structure with four supports and the division into an even number of parts along the perimeter of the covered place proved to be the most efficient, and the research showed that small modifications of the initial base surface in order to adapt the structure to the roof function did not significantly affect its effectiveness. However, the analysis and comparison of single and double-shell rod structures based on minimal surfaces stretched on four arcs have shown that a single-shell structure is much more effective than a double one. The paper considers the theoretical aspects of shaping effective structures, taking their masses as the optimization criterion. The optimization helped to choose the best solutions due to structures’ shapes and topologies. However, the obtained, optimized results can find practical applications after conducting physical tests.

Cyanobacteria, glaucophytes, and rhodophytes utilize giant, light-harvesting phycobilisomes (PBSs) for capturing solar energy and conveying it to photosynthetic reaction centers. PBSs are compositionally and structurally diverse, and exceedingly complex, all of which pose a challenge for a comprehensive understanding of their function. To date, three detailed architectures of PBSs by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) have been described: a hemiellipsoidal type, a block-type from rhodophytes, and a cyanobacterial hemidiscoidal-type. Here, we report cryo-EM structures of a pentacylindrical allophycocyanin core and phycocyanin-containing rod of a thermophilic cyanobacterial hemidiscoidal PBS. The structures define the spatial arrangement of protein subunits and chromophores, crucial for deciphering the energy transfer mechanism. They reveal how the pentacylindrical core is formed, identify key interactions between linker proteins and the bilin chromophores, and indicate pathways for unidirectional energy transfer.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) signaling promote the pathology of many human diseases. Loss-of-function variants of the UPR regulator Activating Transcription Factor 6 (ATF6) cause severe congenital vision loss diseases such as achromatopsia by unclear pathomechanisms. To investigate this, we generated retinal organoids from achromatopsia patient induced pluripotent stem cells carrying ATF6 disease variants and from gene-edited ATF6 null hESCs. We found that achromatopsia patient and ATF6 null retinal organoids failed to form cone structures concomitant with loss of cone phototransduction gene expression, while rod photoreceptors developed normally. Adaptive optics retinal imaging of achromatopsia patients carrying ATF6 variants also showed absence of cone inner/outer segment structures but preserved rod structures, mirroring the defect in cone formation observed in our retinal organoids. These results establish that ATF6 is essential for human cone development. Interestingly, we find that a selective small molecule ATF6 signaling agonist restores the transcriptional activity of some ATF6 disease-causing variants and stimulates cone growth and gene expression in patient retinal organoids carrying these variants. These findings support that pharmacologic targeting of the ATF6 pathway can promote human cone development and should be further explored for blinding retinal diseases.

Developing multifunctional systems for the biomimetic remineralization of human enamel is a challenging task, since hydroxyapatite (HAP) rod structures of tooth enamel are difficult to replicate artificially. The paper presents the first report on the simultaneous use of chitosan (CS) and agarose (A) in a biopolymer-based hydrogel for the biomimetic remineralization of an acid-etched native enamel surface during 4–10-day immersion in artificial saliva with or without (control group) fluoride. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and microhardness tests were applied to investigate the properties of the acid-etched and remineralized dental enamel layers under A and CS-A hydrogels. The results show that all biomimetic epitaxial reconstructed layers consist mostly of a similar hierarchical HAP structure to the native enamel from nano- to microscale. An analogous Ca/P ratio (1.64) to natural tooth enamel and microhardness recovery of 77.4% of the enamel-like layer are obtained by a 7-day remineralization process in artificial saliva under CS-A hydrogels. The CS component reduced carbonation and moderated the formation of HAP nanorods in addition to providing an extracellular matrix to support growing enamel-like structures. Such activity lacked in samples exposed to A-hydrogel only. These data suggest the potential of the CS-A hydrogel in guiding the formation of hard tissues as dental enamel.

This paper presents the results of studies on the analytical dependence between the value of a longitudinal distributed load and the frequency of free vibrations in a uniform rod. Based on the exact solution of the corresponding differential equation, a method for calculating vibrations in rod structures, while considering their dead weight, is implemented. The method algorithm is shown using the example of a rod with both ends clamped. This article contains graphs and analytical formulas for displaying dependencies. A table is provided that contains all the necessary coefficients to perform similar calculations for other boundary conditions. These results allow the physical and mechanical characteristics of a system to be used to determine the natural frequency of rod structures without using approximate methods.
