Most literature on special elections has focused on first-past-the-post contests and on the performance of governments. Turnout, candidates, and how the electoral system impacts the result have received less attention. This contribution fills these voids by exploring special elections in Ireland, elections conducted under the alternative vote system. Taking a multifaceted approach, it investigates the correlates of turnout, the impact of candidates and the decisive effect of lower preferences, while also testing multiple explanations of government performance. I find Irish special elections live up to the by-election truisms of lower turnout and government loss. Government performance is associated with national economic conditions. By-election victory is more likely among candidates with familial lineage and former members of parliament. Where they come into play, one in five candidates owe their victory to lower preferences.

The valence of the predicate has a decisive effect on the structure of the sentence. Although the active and passive variant of the sentence describes the same situation, the predicate goes through a transformation that also has to do with valence. This article analyzes the valency of the predicate and its influence on such transformation in German and Ukrainian based on the examples from modern literature.Purpose. The purpose of the article is to compare the active-passive transformation in German and Ukrainian and to describe the role of valence in this process.Methods. For the research, we collected the examples of passive constructions from modern fiction in German and Ukrainian using the continuous sampling method, which were then processed and analyzed using typological, comparative, descriptive methods as well as the modelling method. The valence of the predicate verb shows in its ability to connect with other sentence elements and enables the prediction of the additional positions in the syntactic structure of the sentence, which can be supplemented by mandatory or optional components. The predicate is characterized by two types of valence, which depend on the position of the fillers in the sentence: the left-hand position is mainly connected the subject of the utterance, and the right-hand position has to do with actants which define object, addressee, location or have instrumental meaning.Results. Due to the fact that the same function of passive constructions in German and Ukrainian is realized in different forms, the valence changes in each of the constructions have their own features. A common feature of these transformations is the reduction of obligatory actants by one unit, which can be filled in optionally in case of communicative need for information about the performer of the action.Conclusions. We reach the conclusion that the valence of the predicate is a multilevel phenomenon that is influenced not only by formal grammatical but also by semantic and syntactic factors as well as the language situation in general. Accordingly, changes in the valence of predicates during the active-passive transformation are inevitable.

The characteristic parameter [Formula: see text] related to bandgap [Formula: see text] is proposed ([Formula: see text] is the equivalent volume of the outermost electron cloud of molecule). [Formula: see text] values of dozens of solid media are calculated. The results show that [Formula: see text] decreases as [Formula: see text] increases. Furthermore, change behavior of [Formula: see text] with composition is studied by using [Formula: see text], and the composition characteristics of high-[Formula: see text] solid media are summarized. According to this result, [Formula: see text] can be regulated to a certain extent by adjusting the composition. Importantly, connection among refractive index [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is revealed: [Formula: see text] has both a major contribution to [Formula: see text] and a decisive effect on [Formula: see text]. These results help to promote the development of new semiconductor materials.

Abstract In this paper, we present the analysis of results of experimental studies of energy dissipation and variations of the transverse strain coefficients under quasistatic tensile stress of metals. The nature of changes in these processes at different stages of deformation is considered: elastic, nonlinear, transition from elastic to developed plastic flow, and developed plastic flow. It is shown that at all stages there is a correlation of changes in independently measured strain parameters: temperature, transverse strain coefficients, and hardening. The decisive effect of the interaction potential anharmonicity on the nature of the processes of changes in modules and dissipation at the nonlinear stage of deformation is discussed.

I joined the Intelligence Corps in autumn 1941. At that time few people were allowed into the Mansion at Bletchley Park, the nerve centre. I was fortunate enough to work in the Mansion and was one of the four founder members of the Testery, set up in October 1941 to break ‘Double Playfair’ cipher messages. Then in July 1942 the Testery was switched to breaking Tunny traffic. Before reminiscing about the breaking of the Tunny code I should like to recall Alan Turing himself. If it had not been for him everything would have been very different, and I am eternally grateful to him that I did not have to bring up my children under the Nazis. We would have entered a dark age of many years—once the Nazis had got you down, they did not let up. Here is just one example of what life was like under the Nazis. After the war I met a brave Belgian lady called Madame Jeanty. Her family was one of those who kept a safe house for Allied airmen, shot down over Europe and trying to make their way back to Britain to fly again. Helen Jeanty and her husband had a hidey-hole in their house, and had an airman in there one day when the Gestapo came calling, at the usual time of 6 a.m. They searched the house up and down but did not find him, and went away. Everybody was delighted and relieved—claps on the back or whatever the Belgians do. But the Gestapo came back again to find this celebration in progress. Her husband was arrested and taken away and she never saw him again. That sort of thing would have happened time and time again here in Britain if the Nazis had managed to invade. One reason Britain did not fall to the Nazis is that in 1941 Turing broke U-boat Enigma. The decisive effect he had on the Battle of the Atlantic can be seen from the tonnages sunk. The tonnages lost to sinkings dropped by 77% after Turing broke into U-boat Enigma in June 1941, from approximately 282,000 tonnes of shipping lost per month during the early part of 1941, to 64,000 tonnes per month by November. If Turing had not managed that, it is almost certain that Britain would have been starved into defeat.

Two studies were conducted to examine the role of progesterone on the odds of survival of embryos transferred into lactating and non - lactating recipient cows. In each study, recipients were synchronized for estrus following the Select Synch + CIDR ® protocol. O n d 7, after exhibiting estrus, embryos were inserted in all cows bearing a viable corpus luteum; embryos were placed in the uterine horn of the ovulating side. Randomly, animals were divided into two groups. Contrary with the control group, cows in the CI DR - group had a CIDR inserted on that same day the embryo was inserted and removed 14 days later. Blood samples for analysis of progesterone were taken at insertion (d 7) and continued at 7 - day intervals for three more weeks. All animals were weighed and bo dy condition scored at the beginning of the studies. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed around d 90. No significant differences were observed in body weights between treatments. Progesterone between treatments within days and between days within treatments are reported. Progesterone between pregnant and non - pregnant cattle was also reported between treatments and within treatments. Progesterone seems to increase the odds of retention of transferred bovine embryos during early gestation. Results also seem to point out that patterns of progesterone secretion during the first two weeks after the transfer have a decisive effect on the survival of bovine embryos. Nevertheless, authors of this document suggest that more research is needed to closely examine these f indings.
