William Molyneux's question to John Locke about whether a blind man restored to sight could name the difference between a cube and a sphere without touching them shaped fundamental conflicts in philosophy, theology and science between empirical and idealist answers that are radically alien to current ways of seeing and feeling but were born of colonizing ambitions whose devastating genocidal and ecocidal consequences intensify today. This Element demonstrates how landscape paintings of unfamiliar terrains required historical and geological subject matter to supply tactile associations for empirical recognition of space, whereas idealism conferred unmediated but no less coercive sensory access. Close visual and verbal analysis using photographs of pictorial sites trace vividly different responses to the question, from those of William Hazlitt and John Ruskin in Britain to those of nineteenth-century authors and artists in the United States and Australia, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Cole, William Haseltine, Fitz Henry Lane and Eugene von Guérard.

There is a tight nexus between visual literacy and textbook picture representations. This is of paramount importance when textbooks in general and ELT textbooks, in particular, are under question. To conduct a visual and verbal discourse analysis based on modes of communication, ELT textbook pictures were analyzed under the assumption that visual and verbal discourse interacts with reflected modes of communication. To this end, 50 ELT textbook pictures were used as the corpus and analyzed according to KvL's (2006) visual images analytical strategies in multimodal texts and Halliday’s (1985) transitivity system for verbal analysis of textbook pictures. The analysis of multimodal resources revealed that the analyzed visual images were used to represent non-human images; close-up images, frontal images, left-right compositions were the most frequent visual modes in the selected pictures. In the case of verbal mode, the relational main-type and verbal minor-type level with 39% and 2% were the most and least frequent verbal strategies, respectively. The findings might have significant theoretical and pedagogical implications for scholars, L2 teachers, and ELT textbook designers to consider the potential of using multimodal resources for non-pedagogical purposes while integrating textbook visual images and verbal strategies to create meanings. Keywords: Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Transitive System’s Processes, Visual Images Interpretive Strategies, Modes of Communication, ELT Textbooks.

There is an old and close relationship between comic and journalism which is reflected in newspapers through caricatures, bullet points and comic strips. However, comic journalism has emerged in the last decades as a new genre, a creative formula that hybridize comic codes and routines with narratives resources used in inmersive journalism. In the early 1990s, Joe Sacco stood out among a number of authors who popularized this new format, became aware of the journalistic genre condition as an information medium and sought his own formula for telling non-fiction stories. The photographer, originally published in 2003, involved the inclusion of photographs to make this formula more realistic and to describe Didier Lefèvre´s experience in the war in Afghanistan in 1986. In 2016, journalists Carlos Spottorno and Guillermo Abril published The crack, a story that once again mixes journalism and comic codes, where photographs subjected to a special chromatic treatment replace the drawings in each vignette. This study analyzes the impact and evolution of comic journalism through this field diary of two reporters who travel the path from Africa to the Arctic follow a boundary line that extends from Africa to the Artic, in order to unravel the causes and consequences of Europe’s identity crisis. A work translated into several languages and awarded with international prizes, which opens up new paths for narrative and aesthetic experimentation in the field of comic journalism. This paper takes as a starting point the theoretical review of the contributions made around the study of the connections between comic and journalism and focuses on the iconic-verbal analysis of The crack, completing the work methodology with open-ended interviews with the authors of the mentioned work.

This chapter responds to the prospect opened up by Gottfried Benn. It derives insights from a vision that deals not with the birth of the new man but with the destruction of language as touchstone for authentic being. From whatever spiritual underworld—remote from the World Spirit—that vernacular may emanate, its analysis will carry more conviction than attempts by the Office for Racial Purity to establish “whether there is any trace of Jewish blood.” Verbal analysis will trace those bastardised linguistic forms back through the world of commerce to the point where venerable metaphors are betrayed by a new reality. And for someone intimate with language, no revelation could be more astonishing, nor a spectacle more striking, than the sight of the empty husk of a word suddenly filling again with the blood that was once its content. From there, the chapter considers how the renewal of German life has enabled an old phrase to return to its origin in some dire event in the past, losing its figurative applications.

Abstract This paper sets out a new, multimodal account (both visual and verbal analysis) of how self-denigration is conveyed through ‘ugly selfies’ as posted to the photo-sharing site Instagram. Drawing on 226 Instagram posts categorised by the poster themselves with the hashtag #uglyselfie, the visual analysis compared the persons and setting in the selfie, the person’s facial expression (eye brow position, mouth expression), eye gaze and camera angle. The verbal analysis included the self-denigration found in the image caption and the rapport enhancing or threatening responses found in the comments to the image posted by others. Ugly selfies are found to convey various types of self-denigration, including self-deprecation and self-mockery. The difference between self-deprecation and self-mockery are explained by the types of ‘mixed messages’ generated by the images. In self-deprecation, the mixed messages arise from a contrast between the visual image and the verbal caption. In self-mockery, the mixed messages arise from contrasts within the image itself, where visual exaggeration and incongruity lead to a jocular interpretation of the ugly selfie. Although the focus in this paper is on self-denigration and selfie-taking, the analysis of mixed messages can be used to analyse many different forms of politeness strategies and many kinds of images shared with increasing frequency and importance on social media sites.

Abstract: The leadership of God's servant raises a polemic because there are still those who think about God's servant being only servant and not being leader, however, in that opinion it is true. The researcher found a superior idea from Matthew 20:25-28 that placed God's servant not only as servant but also as leader. The method used in this research is the research developed by Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. in the book Towards Exegetical Theology: Biblical Exegesis for Teaching and Teaching, which addresses: contextual analysis, syntactic analysis, verbal analysis, theological analysis and homiletical analysis. The researchers, after observing the principle of exegesis presented by Kaiser, Jr., found that the text of Matthew 20: 25-28 could be discussed the themes of the leadership of God's servant who studied contextual and syntactical analysis providing support for the theme. Researchers also pay attention to verbal analysis, theological analysis and homiletical analysis, the results of which support the characteristics of God's servant leadership in Matthew 20:25-28, namely: communicative, assertive, gentle, humble, serving, willing to sacrifice.

The growth of the company’s investment potential is closely associated with the evaluation of the attendant risks of the process, various influencing factors, and the expected results. Therefore, the analysis of a number of qualitative and quantitative criteria of the projects and risks, as well as the potential profit-making opportunities in the investment decision making is required. This paper analyzes a decision-making strategy based on qualitative estimates obtained by investigating the risks posed, the management methods used, and the application of the proposed methods for assessing the contractor’s risk in construction companies.

Parents have the potential to doubt the the teacher’s quality in teaching the students, that is why a barometer or indicators are needed so that the teacher as an educator can be assessed objectively. Ideas built by the experts are needed as the best solution as well as biblical principles to find the right formula. This study uses the exegesis method which is seen through contextual analysis, syntactical analysis, verbal analysis, theological analysis and homiletical analysis. This study found what is meant by parents' assessment on the teachers’ teaching quality according to 2 Timothy 2:15-21 is the act of assessing the intelligence, the potential done by the father or the mother regarding good quality or services in facilitating the activities of learning or training through explanations, questions and answers, discussions, and expressing the opinions guided by competent educators or instructors, who are characterized by: teaching professionally (verse 15), teaching correctly in accordance with learning material (paragraph 15), teaching in accordance with learning objectives (verse 16-19), teaching with the right media (verse 20) and teaching with the right method (verse 21).
