Vinylogous enolate and enolate-type carbanions, generated by deprotonation of α,β-unsaturated compounds and characterized by delocalization of the negative charge over two or more carbon atoms, are extensively used in organic synthesis, enabling functionalization and C–C bond formation at remote positions. Similarly, reactions with electrophiles at benzylic and heterobenzylic position are performed through generation of arylogous and heteroarylogous enolate-type nucleophiles. Although widely exploited in metal-catalysis and organocatalysis, it is only in recent years that the vinylogy and arylogy principles have been translated fruitfully in phase-transfer catalyzed processes. This review provides an overview of the methods developed to date, involving vinylogous and (hetero)arylogous carbon nucleophiles under phase-transfer catalytic conditions, highlighting main mechanistic aspects.

In this personal account, we summarize our investigations on the asymmetric direct addition of C(sp2)-H bond to unsaturated compounds such as C=O, C=C using cationic Iridium-chiral O-linked bidentatephosphoramidite (Me-BIPAM) and S-linked bidentatephosphoramidite (S-Me-BIPAM) catalyst system.

The direct α-Csp3-H functionalization of simple ethers has emerged as one of the vital strategies among radical reactions. This review discusses their applications according to the starting materials: (1) reactions with alkenes or alkynes. (2) reactions with other unsaturated compounds. (3) reactions with nucleophilic partners. Mechanisms like radical addition, elimination, oxidation, metal-catalyzed coupling, C-H activation, cyclization and rearrangement will be discussed herein.

AbstractReduction reactions of unsaturated compounds are fundamental transformations in synthetic chemistry. In this context, the reduction of polarized double bonds such as carbonyl or C=C motifs can be achieved by hydrogenation reactions. We describe here a highly chemoselective Mn(I)-based PNP pincer catalyst for the hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones employing polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as inexpensive hydrogen donor. P(O)-H compounds like H-phosphites, H-phosphinates and H-phosphine oxides are widely used as nucleophiles. Herein, reactions with unsaturated compounds, C-H activation, Hiro reaction, P-C, P-S, P-O, P-N and P-F couplings were thoroughly discussed and summarized. This review will focus on their reactions with alkenes, alkynes, enamides, propiolic acids, epoxide, arynes, arenes, quinones, isothiocyanates, diazo compounds, aldehydes, ketones, imines, pyridines, acid derivatives, carbocations, aryl halides, dibromoalkenes, disulfides, thiosulfates, sulfonyl chlorides, iodonium salts, amines, alcohols and thioalcohols.
