Purpose This paper aims to propose a deployment optimization and efficient synchronous acquisition method for compressive stress sensors used by stress distribution law research based on the genetic algorithm and numerical simulations. The authors established a new method of collecting the mining compressive stress-strain distribution data to address the problem of the number of sensors and to optimize the sensor locations in physical similarity simulations to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data collection. Design/methodology/approach First, numerical simulations were used to obtain the compressive stress distribution curve under specific mining conditions. Second, by comparing the mean square error between a fitted curve and simulation data for different numbers of sensors, a genetic algorithm was used to optimize the three-dimensional (3D) spatial deployment of sensors. Third, the authors designed an efficient synchronous acquisition module to allow distributed sensors to achieve synchronous and efficient acquisition of hundreds of data points through a built-in on-board database and a synchronous sampling communication structure. Findings The sensor deployment scheme was established through the genetic algorithm, A synchronous and selective data acquisition method was established for reduced the amount of sensor data required under synchronous acquisition and improved the system acquisition efficiency. The authors obtained a 3D compressive stress distribution when the advancement was 200 m on a large-scale 3D physical similarity simulation platform. Originality/value The proposed method provides a new optimization method for sensor deployment in physical similarity simulations, which improves the efficiency and accuracy of system data acquisition, providing accurate acquisition data for experimental data analysis.

Purpose In this study, a physical similarity simulation plays a significant role in the study of crack evolution and the gas migration mechanism. A sensor is deployed inside a comparable artificial rock formation to assure the accuracy of the experiment results. During the building of the simulated rock formation, a huge volume of acidic gas is released, causing numerous sensor measurement mistakes. Additionally, the gas concentration estimation approach is subject to uncertainty because of the complex rock formation environment. As a result, the purpose of this study is to introduce an adaptive Kalman filter approach to reduce observation noise, increase the accuracy of the gas concentration estimation model and, finally, determine the gas migration law. Design/methodology/approach First, based on the process of gas floatation-diffusion and seepage, the gas migration model is established according to Fick’s second law, and a simplified modeling method using diffusion flux instead of gas concentration is presented. Second, an adaptive Kalman filter algorithm is introduced to establish a gas concentration estimation model, taking into account the model uncertainty and the unknown measurement noise. Finally, according to a large-scale physical similarity simulation platform, a thorough experiment about gas migration is carried out to extract gas concentration variation data with certain ventilation techniques and to create a gas chart of the time-changing trend. Findings This approach is used to determine the changing process of gas distribution for a certain ventilation mode. The results match the rock fissure distribution condition derived from the microseismic monitoring data, proving the effectiveness of the approach. Originality/value For the first time in large-scale three-dimensional physical similarity simulations, the adaptive Kalman filter data processing method based on the inverse Wishart probability density function is used to solve the problem of an inaccurate process and measurement noise, laying the groundwork for studying the gas migration law and determining the gas migration mechanism.

Abstract Short-wall block backfill mining (SBBM) technology is an effective method to solve the environmental problems in the mining process. Based on the technical characteristics of SBBM technology and the physical similarity criterion, the physical similarity models for comparing the control effects of water-flowing fracture (WFF) development using short-wall block cave mining (SBCM) and SBBM were established, and the deformation and the WFF development of overlying strata above gob were monitored. The test results determined that the composite materials of 5 mm thick pearl sponge+5 mm thick sponge+10 mm thick paper+6 mm thick board were adopted as the similar backfill materials by comparing the stress-strain curves between the similar backfill materials and the original gangue sample. When the backfilling body was filled into the gob, it would be the permanent bearing body, which bore the load of the overlying strata accompanied with the protective coal pillar. At the same time, the backfilling body also filled the collapse space of overlying strata, which was equivalent to reduce the mining height, and effectively reduced the subsidence and failure height of the overlying strata. Compared with SBCM, the test results showed that the maximum vertical deformation, the height of water-flowing fractured zone, and activity range of overlying strata using SBBM were reduced by 91.4%, 82.5%, and 64.9%, respectively. SBBM had a significant control effect on strata damage and WFF development, which could realize the purpose of water resource protection in coal mines.

Abstract Multipole expansions of the source play an important role in a broad range of disciplines in modern physics, ranging from the description of exotic states of matter to the design of nanoantennas in photonics. Within the context of the latter, toroidal multipoles, a third group of multipoles complementing the well-known electric and magnetic ones, have been widely investigated since they lead to the formation of non-radiating sources. In the last years, however, the photonics community has brought to light the existence of a fourth type of multipoles that is commonly overlooked. Currently, different groups have provided different mathematical expressions to describe such sources, and they have been coined with different names; on the one hand mean-square radii, and on the other hand, as high order toroidal moments. Despite their clear physical similarity, a formal relation between the two has not yet been established. While explicit formulas for both types have been derived, they are not expressed in the same basis, and therefore it is not possible to draw a clear physical connection between them. In this contribution, we will bridge this gap and rigorously derive the connection between the two representations, taking as an example the cases of the nth order mean square radius of the electric dipole and the nth order electric toroidal dipole. Our results conclusively show that both types of representations are exactly equivalent up to a prefactor.

The present study deals with the similarity of catchments, which is a preliminary investigation before performing various water resource analyses and computations regarding other catchments, e.g., catchments’ similarity may be utilized in the context of analogous calculations of river flows in catchments without measured flows. In this paper, the penalization method of evaluating similarity is proposed; this method is appropriate for tasks in which fewer catchments are analyzed for engineering purposes. In addition to the various physical characteristics of the catchment, the “catchment’s calibrability” property is also formulated and evaluated. A methodology that used specific flows from catchments in a case study from Slovakia successfully verified the proposed penalization method. This verification confirmed that physical similarity, as evaluated using the proposed penalization methodology, also helps to identify hydrological similarity, i.e., finding the most similar catchment to a given catchment in terms of the rainfall-runoff process. Such a finding can be helpful, e.g., in the computation of the mentioned flows in ungauged catchments. Determining unmeasured flows can help to solve many engineering tasks, such as various technical calculations during the design of small reservoirs, defining the potential of a given stream for supplying irrigation, flood protection, etc.

Non-pillar sublevel caving is beginning to use large structural parameters in China. Appropriate structural parameters can effectively control the loss and dilution of stope and improve ore drawing efficiency. In this study, taking Chengchao Iron Mine as the engineering background, a theoretical calculation, a numerical simulation, and physical similarity experiments were combined to optimize sublevel height, production drift spacing, and drawing space. The optimal structural parameter range, based on the ellipsoid ore drawing theory, was obtained as a theoretical reference for subsequent studies. A “two-step” strategy was used, in which PFC2D software (Itasca Consulting Group, Minneapolis, MN, USA) was used to numerically simulate 20 groups of different sublevel heights and production drift spacing parameters were used to determine the appropriate sublevel height and production drift spacing for the project. Subsequently, the optimization of the ore drawing space was studied using PFC3D (Itasca Consulting Group, Minneapolis, MN, USA) particle unit software, numerical simulation analysis, and similar physical experiments. The results showed that safe and efficient mining can be achieved when the structural parameters of the stope are 17.5 m sublevel height, 20 m production drift spacing, and 6 m drawing space. The findings of this study can further the goal of green and efficient mining, and provide a theoretical reference for the popularization and application of pillarless sublevel caving with large structural parameters at home and abroad. It is an effective measure for the green mining of caving mines.

A development of overlying strata fractures and an unknown distribution of the two zones, which results from a strong shock tendency roof short-distance coal seam group mining, are the main problems faced by Xiashijie Coal Mine. Consequently, an experiment has been conducted; here are the steps: designing an underlying strata development law and the two-zone distribution physical similarity simulation test under the short-distance coal seam group combined mining, using the BT-AE to comonitor the fracture development law and the distribution characteristics of the caving zone and the water-conducting fractured zone, and combining with 3DEC comparative analysis. The results show that after the coal seam mining is over, the number of overlying fractures increases with depth, controlled by the mining stress field in the direction of 115° west from north to west. The direction of overlying fracture is mainly concentrated in the area of 300° ~30°; the overlying fracture angles eventually develop to 81° and 74°, increasing by 15.7% and 8.8%, and the caving ratio and cracking ratio are 4.87 and 17.75. After comparing with the numerical calculation results, the reliability of the two zones obtained by the physical similarity simulation test is verified. The AE analysis results show that the “release-accumulate-release” energy evolution process of overlying rock fracture under mining conditions has a phased relationship with fracture expansion. The energy positioning results are consistent with the distribution of BT observation cracks, and the large energy events are mostly concentrated in the collapse zone, indicating that AE has the practicality of disaster warning. The results of this study provide scientific guidance for water-preserving mining under the combined mining of coal seams with a strong impact tendency roof in Xiashijie Coal Mine.

Abstract. Reconstruction and explanation of past climate evolution using proxy records is the essence of paleoclimatology. In this study, we use dimensional analysis and concepts of similarity to recognize theoretical limits of such forensic inquiries. Specifically, we demonstrate that incomplete similarity in the dynamical ice-climate system implies the absence of physical similarity in conglomerate similarity parameters. It means that major events of the past such as, for example, the middle-Pleistocene transition could have been produced by different physical processes, and, therefore, the task of disambiguation of the historical paleo-records may be fundamentally difficult, if not impossible. It also means that any future scenario may not have a unique cause and, in this sense, the orbital time-scale future may be to some extent insensitive to specific physical circumstances.

Abstract Accurate zygosity determination is a fundamental step in twin research. Although DNA-based testing is the gold standard for determining zygosity, collecting biological samples is not feasible in all research settings or all families. Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of zygosity estimation based on questionnaire (physical similarity) data in older twins, but the extent to which this is also a reliable approach in infancy is less well established. Here, we report the accuracy of different questionnaire-based zygosity determination approaches (traditional and machine learning) in 5.5 month-old twins. The participant cohort comprised 284 infant twin pairs (128 dizygotic and 156 monozygotic) who participated in the Babytwins Study Sweden (BATSS). Manual scoring based on an established technique validated in older twins accurately predicted 90.49% of the zygosities with a sensitivity of 91.65% and specificity of 89.06%. The machine learning approach improved the prediction accuracy to 93.10%, with a sensitivity of 91.30% and specificity of 94.29%. Additionally, we quantified the systematic impact of zygosity misclassification on estimates of genetic and environmental influences using simulation-based sensitivity analysis on a separate data set to show the implication of our machine learning accuracy gain. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the feasibility of determining zygosity in very young infant twins using a questionnaire with four items and builds a scalable machine learning model with better metrics, thus a viable alternative to DNA tests in large-scale infant twin studies.

The movement of the overlying strata in steeply dipping coal seams is complex, and the deformation of roof rock beam is obvious. In general, the backfill mining method can improve the stability of the surrounding rock effectively. In this study, the 645 working face of the tested mine is used as a prototype to establish the mechanical model of the inclined roof beam using the sloping flexible shield support backfilling method in a steeply dipping coal seam, and the deflection equation is derived to obtain the roof damage structure and the maximum deflection position of the roof beam. Finally, numerical simulation and physical similarity simulation experiments are carried out to study the stability of the surrounding rock structure under backfilling mining in steeply dipping coal seams. The results show the following: (1) With the support of the gangue filling body, the inclined roof beam has smaller roof subsidence, and the maximum deflection position moves to the upper part of working face. (2) With the increase of the stope height, the stress and displacement field of the surrounding rock using the backfilling method show an asymmetrical distribution, the movement, deformation, and failure increase slowly, and the increase of the strain is relatively stable. Compared with the caving method, the range and degree of the surrounding rock disturbed by the mining stress are lower. The results of numerical simulation and physical similarity simulation experiment are generally consistent with the theoretically derived results. Overall, this study can provide theoretical basis for the safe and efficient production of steeply dipping coal seams.
