Abstract: The present work develops a study on the so-called visual poetry by means of an integrated method which will fuse the analytical tools of the semiotic theory with considerations of Cognitive Poetics about this kind of intermedial objects. Therefore, from a theoretical study which will provide us with this cognitive-semiotic analytical tools, a practical study will follow with the analysis of specific and varied works of visual poetry, which will be selected within the works of Fernando Millán, Felipe Boso and Clara Janés.

The aims of this research are; (1) Describe the form of cultural signs in the novel Toraja; When Love Finds its Way Home based on Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic theory. (2) Describe the meaning of cultural signs in the novel Toraja; When Love Finds Its Way Home.  This research is a qualitative research. The data in this study are data obtained from novels in the form of icons, indexes and symbols as well as data obtained from interviews. Sources of data in this study is a novel entitled Toraja; When Love Finds its Way Home by Endang, SSN, and also an informant who is the head of the Ke'te Kesu' tradition in North Toraja. The data collection technique used in this study is a documentation technique which includes observing and recording the various signs that are needed, as well as using open interview techniques.  The results of this study indicate that the form of the sign is more dominant in the novel Toraja; When Love Finds its Way Home is a symbol consisting of five data. In addition to symbols, researchers also found signs in the form of icons (one data) and indexes (two data). As we know that based on his criteria, Pierce distinguishes signs into three, namely icons, indexes and symbols.

This study aims to describe (1) heuristic reading (2) hermeneutic reading (3) matrix, model, and (4) hypogram in the poem “Hakikat Cinta” by Rabi'ah Al-Adawiyah. This research is a library research because the primary data and secondary data are in the form of books or related documents. This study uses a qualitative descriptive technique through the semiotic approach of Michael Riffaterre. The results of the study are as follows. (1) The heuristic recitation of each sentence shows that this poem tells the story of Rabi'ah's love for his Lord, in this case he gave his whole life and death to Allah. (2) The Hermeneutic reading tells about the rabi'ah immense love for Allah, this is expressed in every verse that she expresses through her poetry. (3) The matrix in this poem is the praises conveyed by the Rabi'ah to the creator. (4) The hypogram in this poem is an intertextual hypogram, which is an explanation related to the poetry written by Rabi'ah which is closely related to the verses of the Qur'an an. After using the semiotic theory of the riffaterre, it can be concluded that according to Rabi'ah the only purpose of life that is very natural to be loved is Allah. The word love which is repeated every time by the rabi'ah implies the integrated meaning of all love only to Allah, because all forms of love and feelings grow because of the beauty and perfection of Allah

This paper examines the meaning of shifa in the Qur'an as stated in Q.S. Al-Israa [17]: 82 which can be used as a means of treating various diseases, both psychological and physical. Employing the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes consisting of two stages (the linguistic system which is also interpreted as denotative meaning and the system of mythology (myth) as connotative meaning), the results obtained that shifa is not only oriented to the psychic alone, but to healing both the psychic (spiritual) and physical. The message contained in the verse is that it is recommended to do treatment using the Qur'an, with lawful (halal) practices, and it is not allowed to practice medical treatment that can classify to shirk such as using magic spells, mediation of belief in objects, sacred places of worship, and other things that are superstitious.

Although J J Gibson’s theory of picture perception was often crude and biased toward naturalism, its fundamental division between the visual world and the visual field made it a semiotic theory. Contrariwise, although Arnheim wrote sensitively on pictures, he never seemed to admit that they were signs. This paper reviews both Gibson’s and Arnheim’s theories of picture perception, and explains where Arnheim’s biases caused him to lose the possibility of framing his approach in the most basic semiotic terms. Nevertheless, using the phenomenological semiotics of Sonesson and his theory of the Lifeworld Hierarchy, I demonstrate latent semiotic elements in Arnheim’s theory, due perhaps to Alfred Schutz’s influence. Hoping to argue against the brute theory of denotation, Arnheim instead sought to delay invocation of (conventional) signs as long as possible, and his idea of iconic pictorialization assumes but does not name signification. Nevertheless, I propose that Arnheim has a kind of theory of the Lifeworld Hierarchy inside the picture. Thus, he (wrongly) does not see the picture as overtly signifying but interestingly gives hints about how to treat the objects of the virtual world of the picture based on their relationship to the overall style of the work.

The interpretation of Surah al-Kafirun today is found to be a little disturbing for religious people, both among religions and between religious communities. Especially after the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, namely Nahdatul 'Ulama which issued bahtsul masail results about non-Muslims who are not infidels. Netizens are busy blaspheming and identifying non-Muslims as not even infidels to the point of stating that the meaning of the letter al-Kafirun today is no longer relevant. To answer this question, the author compiles Roland Barthes' theory of semiotics into this letter of al-Kafirun. The author interprets this letter of al-Kafirun using two levels of semiotics. The first level of semiotics analyzes linguistics or language. Meanwhile, the second level semiotics analyzes the connotative meaning in the text by revealing the mythical characteristics of the verse as stated in Roland Barthes' semiotic theory.
