The main aim of this article was to investigate the educational potential of a game-based math game competition to engage students in training rational numbers. Finnish fourth (n = 59; Mage = 10.36) and sixth graders (n = 105; Mage = 12.34) participated in a math game competition relying on intra-classroom cooperation and inter-classroom competition. During a three-week period, the students were allowed to play a digital rational number game, which is founded on number line estimation task mechanics. The results indicated that students benefited significantly from participating in the competition and playing behaviour could be used to assess students rational number knowledge. Moreover, students were engaged in the competition and the results revealed that intrinsically motivating factors such as enjoyment and perceived learning gains predicted students' willingness to participate in math game competitions again. This article provides empirical support that educational game competition can be an effective, engaging, and a fair instructional approach.

Drawing on a multimodal framework, this chapter looks at the ways engagement and embodiment of learning are mediated through play as sixth graders learn to skin or repurpose board games to represent the story of The Lightning Thief. Studying game design for the purpose of skinning, that is, applying a new theme or skin to a game, provides a literacy learning process that can foster collaborative, creative, and authentic learning. Outcomes demonstrated gains in social skills and interactions, critical thinking, reading comprehension, visual representation, graphic design, and writing for specific purposes. Analysis revealed that students were immersed in the learning process to the extent that they felt comfortable acting informally, responding in the moment, and being playful. This chapter shows a way to foster academic growth, engagement in learning, and collaboration is to engage students in skinning games based on literature and integrated a playful learning environment.

This study aims to discover the moral value in character of Learisa Kayeli's Crocodile story written and developed by Asrif. Literary studies talking about children's literature through Maluku folklore are still not found in scientific journals. Therefore, the theory used in this study is the children’s literature theory of Burhan Nurgiyantoro. The research method used descriptive method of content analysis. This study describes the qualifications and disclosure of the character from the story as an introduction in interpreting the moral values. This story was chosen because (1) it has never been examined using children's literature theory; (2) the important characters are played by animal characters and result in more readers’ imagination compared to stories with human characters; (3) this story is intended for children especially for the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders; (4) it has a complete storyline; and (5) it is printed Maluku folklore written in Indonesian and went through digitalization process. This study concludes that there are seven moral values conveyed by the author in character of Learisa Kayeli's Crocodile story, namely: (1) do not be afraid to defend the truth or to quell tyranny even though life is at stake in order to create a harmonious and peaceful life; (2) appreciate the one who has contributed in (saving) your life in order to establish eternal brotherhood until the end of life; (3) do not disturb the peace of other people's lives so that your lives remain fortune; (4) never give up in trying to do something so that your dreams can be achieved; (5) make good friends with others so that you may be accepted by anyone and anywhere including in any new environment; (6) be patient in solving any obstacles in life so you can cherish other people; and (7) be wise to the surrounding environment in order to create a healthy natural balance so that it can provide benefits for mankind.

The study aimed to identify the level of basic sixth-graders' acquisition of some of the values of citizenship and their level of competence in confrontation, and to reveal the relationship between the level of their acquisition of some values of citizenship and the level of competence of confrontation they have, and to reveal the differences between them in the acquisition of specific citizenship values (patriotism, commitment, responsibility The study sample consisted of (420) male and female students of the sixth grade, of whom (219) were pupils, and (201) pupils in the schools of Tartous city, and the study adopted the descriptive approach, and the Specific Citizenship Values Scale, and the Confrontation Efficiency Scale were used, which were prepared by the researcher using the previous studies. The city of Tartous, and their average level of confrontation competence, and the presence of a positive correlation between the scores of the study sample "of sixth grade students" in the scale of citizenship values and their scores in the scale of confrontation competence, a J The higher the level of students ’acquisition of citizenship values, the higher their level of coping competence, and there are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the study sample of sixth-grade students on the scale of citizenship values according to the gender variable in favor of female students in the overall score and sub-dimensions. Except for the second dimension (commitment value), it was not statistically significant and there were no differences between males and females, and there were no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the study sample of sixth grade students on the scale of coping efficiency according to the gender variable.

By the end of primary school, students are confronted with expository texts known for their high proportion of domain-specific academic vocabulary words. These words usually comprise Greek or Latin roots in their internal structure. Recent findings showed that knowledge of Greek and Latin roots is related to reading comprehension. However, no study has investigated such a relationship in a francophone context. Therefore, the present study sought to measure Greek and Latin roots’ relation to reading comprehension among French 6th graders. To do so, 40 participants were administrated an experimental task on Greek and Latin roots knowledge and a reading comprehension standardized subset test. Variables related to reading comprehension, such as morphological awareness, vocabulary breadth, word reading fluency, oral comprehension, and working memory were also measured. Results showed that knowledge of Greek and Latin roots significantly predicted variation of reading comprehension. This paper discusses scientific and educational implications of this finding.

The implementation of self-assessment might contribute to the young learners’ English proficiency and affective domain. Yet, there is still limited findings found for the effect on young learners’ writing performance. This experimental study investigated the effect of on-task and off-task self-assessment on young learners of English as a foreign language in Bali, Indonesia. 46 sixth graders participated in this study were required to do self-assessment in completing their writing prompt. A self-assessment checklist was used as the instrument. The on-task self-assessment group applies the self-assessment checklist at every stage of their writing process, namely pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.  On the other hand, the off-task self-assessment group uses the self-assessment checklist before they start the writing process. Using independent samples t-test for hypothesis testing, it was found that there is no significant difference in both groups’ writing performance since the real probability that is due to sampling error is 0.194 which is bigger than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, self-assessment could be implemented in on-task and off-task since it brings similar effect to the young learners’ writing performance.

Abstract Background We evaluated the effects of health-promoting school (HPS) strategy on plaque control and behavior change in high-caries schoolchildren in Taitung, Taiwan. Methods A quasi-experimental design was adopted; six intervention schools (intervention group [IG]) and six comparison schools (comparison group [CG]) were selected from elementary schools with higher-than-average caries rates (> 68%). The IG was selected using cluster sampling, and the CG was selected to match the IG. In total, the IG and CG groups included 166 and 174 children each. The selected schools implemented the HPS framework for 3 months in the 2019 academic year. An oral examination of dental plaque was administered, and a self-administered questionnaire regarding knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and behaviors was distributed at baseline and at 2-week follow-up. A linear and logistic regression model using generalized estimating equations (GEEs) was used to analyze the differences between baseline and the follow-up data. Results Compared with the CG, the IG had a greater reduction in plaque index among second graders (β =  − 0.36) and plaque control record scores among second, fourth, and sixth graders (β =  − 27.48, − 26.04, and − 18.38, respectively). The IG also exhibited a greater increase at follow-up with respect to oral health–related knowledge among second graders and fourth graders (β = 1.46 and β = 0.92, respectively), attitude toward oral hygiene behaviors among sixth graders (β = 1.78), and self-efficacy regarding flossing for sixth graders (β = 1.43). Sixth graders in the IG were significantly more likely to brush before sleeping (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.99) and use fluoride toothpaste (aOR = 5.88) than those in the CG. Conclusions The HPS strategy was effective in reducing dental plaque and promoting preventing behaviors in rural high-caries schoolchildren.
