Abstract Effects of erosion phenomenon on the performance of a given gun barrel have been analyzed throughout numerical and experimental studies. Mainly, qualitative observations were performed. Theoretical relations between the evolution of the inner barrel profile and the provided interior ballistics are limited. This paper focuses on the development of a numerical model to predict the engraving resistance evolution in terms of the inner barrel profile in the different weapon's life stages. Four test barrels "12.7x99mm NATO" with different chamber volumes were considered. First, a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with a contact scanning probe was used to measure the inner dimension of the guns. Second, piezoelectric sensors with a special doppler radar were considered to measure the (i) pressure and (ii) the bullet velocity in the test weapons. Finally, based on the obtained experimental results, a Finite Element (FE) analysis using the commercial software LS-DYNA was developed and validated. The obtained numerical results were used as insights to quantify the relationship between the engraving resistance and the chamber volume of small caliber guns.

Abstract Background Implantable Collamer lens (ICL) vaulting is one of the most important parameters for the safety, aqueous humor circulation, and lens transparency after ICL implantation. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the actual vaulting after refractive EVO-ICL surgery. Methods This retrospective study included patients who underwent EVO-ICL surgery at a tertiary eye hospital between October and December 2019. A RESCAN 700 was used for the intraoperative and CIRRUS HD-OCT was used for postoperative observation of vaulting. Subjective and objective refractions, anterior ocular segment, corneal morphology, intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber volume (ACV), crystalline lens rise (CLR), white-to-white distance (WTW), anterior chamber depth (ACD), axial length, corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), and fundoscopy were examined. A multivariable analysis was performed to determine the factors independently associated with 1-month postoperative vaulting. Results Fifty-one patients (102 eyes) were included. Compared with the eyes with normal vaulting, those with high vaulting had higher preoperative diopter values (P = 0.039), lower preoperative corrected visual acuity (P = 0.006), lower preoperative IOP (P = 0.029), higher preoperative ACD (P = 0.004), lower preoperative CLR (P = 0.046), higher ICL spherical equivalent (P = 0.030), higher intraoperative vaulting (P < 0.001), and lower IOP at 1 month (P = 0.045). The multivariable analysis showed that the only factor independently associated with high vaulting at 1 month after surgery was the intraoperative vaulting value (odds ratio = 1.005, 95% confidence interval: 1.002–1.007, P < 0.001). The intraoperative and 1-month postoperative vaulting values were positively correlated (R2 = 0.562). Conclusions The RESCAN700 system can be used to perform intraoperative optical coherence tomography to predict the vaulting value of ICL at 1 month.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and assess preoperative characteristics that may predict outcomes in keratoconus 1 year after accelerated transepithelial corneal cross-linking (ATE-CXL). Methods This prospective study included 93 eyes of 84 consecutive keratoconus patients with 1-year follow-up after ATE-CXL. Preoperative characteristics included corneal astigmatism, anterior chamber depth, anterior chamber volume, radius of curvature, posterior elevation, central corneal thickness (CCT), thinnest corneal thickness, steepest meridian keratometry, flattest meridian keratometry, and the maximum keratometry (Kmax). Data were obtained preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. The patient eyes were grouped into 3 subgroups according to CCT and Kmax values to observe the changes of keratoconus progression. Results All patients were successfully operated without complications at any follow-up time point. Mean changes of Kmax from baseline at 6 and 12 months were − 0.60 ± 2.21 D (P = 0.011) and − 0.36 ± 1.58 D (P = 0.030), respectively. Eyes with a thinner CCT and higher Kmax values exhibited a tendency for topographic flattening of ≥1.0 D (P = 0.003; P = 0.003). In the subgroup comparison, the Kmax values decreased significantly at 6 and 12 months after ATE-CXL in the group with CCT ≤ 450 μm (P = 0.018 and P = 0.045); the Kmax values of the group with Kmax > 65.0 D decreased significantly at 6 months postoperatively (P = 0.025). Conclusion ATE-CXL is a safe and effective treatment for keratoconus patients. Patients with thinner CCT and higher Kmax values are more likely to benefit from ATE-CXL.

Background: To investigate the correlation between the corneal biomechanical parameter stress-strain index (SSI) and axial length (AL) in moderately elongated eye (MEE) and severely elongated eye (SEE).Methods: This study included 117 eyes from 117 participants. Among them, 59 (50.4%) had MEE (AL&lt;26 mm) and 58 (49.6%) had SEE (AL≥26 mm). AL was measured using Lenstar LS-900, and central corneal thickness (CCT) and anterior chamber volume (ACV) were measured using Pentacam. SSI was measured via corneal visualisation Scheimpflug technology (Corvis ST). Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Student’s t-test, and Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used for statistical analyses.Results: The mean (±SD) SSI was 1.08 ± 0.15 in the MEE group and 0.92 ± 0.13 in the SEE group (p &lt; 0.01). SSI was positively correlated with age (MEE: r = 0.326, p &lt; 0.05; SEE: r = 0.298, p &lt; 0.05) in both groups; it was negatively correlated with AL (r = −0.476, p &lt; 0.001) in the MEE group but not in the SEE group (p &gt; 0.05). CCT was negatively correlated with AL (r = −0.289, p &lt; 0.05) and ACV positively correlated with AL (r = 0.444, p &lt; 0.001) in the MEE group. Neither CCT nor ACV was correlated with AL (p &gt; 0.05) in the SEE group.Conclusion: Corneal biomechanical parameter SSI, which represents the stiffness of corneal tissue, was lower in the SEE group than in the MEE group. When analyzed separately, SSI was negatively correlated with AL in the MEE group, but not in the SEE group, which may provide insight into different ocular growth patterns between lower myopia and higher myopia.

Abstract Background: To evaluate and compare the changes in intraocular pressure and anterior eye segment biometrics,during and after wearing two types of commonly used swimming goggles.Methods: In a cross-sectional study, a total of 40 healthy adults aged between 18 and 60 years old were selected to wear two kinds of common swimming goggles (ocular socket and orbital goggles). Intraocular pressure and anterior segment biometry were evaluated before wearing, at 2 and 5 minutes of wearing, and at 5 minutes after removing the goggles. Intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal front keratometry values (K1, K2, Km), central corneal thickness (CCT), central anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), and anterior chamber angle (ACA) were measured.Results: The IOP at 2 minutes (21.0±2.2 mmHg) and 5 minutes (21.2±2.3 mmHg) was significantly higher than before wearing goggles (17.7± 2.1 mmHg). The IOP after the goggles were removed and at 5 minutes after the goggles were removed was 18.4±2.3 mmHg and 17.7±2.1 mmHg, respectively. ACV, ACD, and ACA values all decreased while the googles were worn. After the goggles were removed, these changes gradually returned to baseline values, with no significant difference in the values before and after.Conclusion: This study proves that wearing orbital goggles can lead to an acute increase in IOP and a slight decrease in ACV, ACD, and ACA. However, once the goggles are removed, these indicators return to baseline levels, showing that wearing orbital goggles has no significant lasting effect on IOP and anterior segment parameters.

Lithium resources face risks of shortages owing to the rapid development of the lithium industry. This makes the efficient production and recycling of lithium an issue that should be addressed immediately. Lithium bromide is widely used as a water-absorbent material, a humidity regulator, and an absorption refrigerant in the industry. However, there are few studies on the recovery of lithium from lithium bromide after disposal. In this paper, a bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) process is proposed to convert waste lithium bromide into lithium hydroxide, with the generation of valuable hydrobromic acid as a by-product. The effects of the current density, the feed salt concentration, and the initial salt chamber volume on the performance of the BMED process were studied. When the reaction conditions were optimized, it was concluded that an initial salt chamber volume of 200 mL and a salt concentration of 0.3 mol/L provided the maximum benefit. A high current density leads to high energy consumption but with high current efficiency; therefore, the optimum current density was identified as 30 mA/cm2. Under the optimized conditions, the total economic cost of the BMED process was calculated as 2.243 USD·kg−1LiOH. As well as solving the problem of recycling waste lithium bromide, the process also represents a novel production methodology for lithium hydroxide. Given the prices of lithium hydroxide and hydrobromic acid, the process is both environmentally friendly and economical.

Purpose: To investigate the association between keratoconus and congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Patients and methods: Patients were enrolled in this study and divided into two groups. The first group comprised 31 subjects (11M:20F) with the mean age of 15.2 ± 3.9 years. affected by CH, and the control group was composed by 19 healthy individuals (8M:11F) aged 14.3 ± 4.6 years. All patients underwent complete ophthalmologic examination with visual acuity assessment, refraction, slit lamp examination, and retinoscopy. Corneal parameters were measured using Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam® Oculus, Germany). The main outcome measures considered for evaluation were: average corneal curvature (K), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior elevation and posterior elevation at the thinnest point, corneal volume (CV), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and anterior chamber volume (ACV). Additionally, data from Belin/Ambrosio Enhanced Ectasia Display (BAD) and the high order aberrations were evaluated. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to verify the Gaussian distribution, the comparison between the controls and cases group was performed by Mann-Whitney nonparametric test. A p value less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. The odds ratio was performed in order to quantify the relationship between the congenital hypothyroidism and abnormal values displayed on front BAD. Results: The significant difference in the refractive status between both groups was observed. As to examined corneal and anterior chamber parameters no statistical differences were detected. Conclusions: Congenital hypothyroidism diagnosed and treated since the early postnatal life doesn’t induce abnormalities of corneal parameters suggestive for keratoconus.

Human blood cells may offer a minimally invasive strategy to study systemic alterations of mitochondrial function. Here we tested the reliability of a protocol designed to study mitochondrial respiratory control in human platelets (PLTs) in field studies, using high-resolution respirometry (HRR). Several factors may trigger PLT aggregation during the assay, altering the homogeneity of the cell suspension and distorting the number of cells added to the two chambers (A, B) of the Oroboros Oxygraph-2k (O2k). Thus, inter-chamber variability (∆ab) was calculated by normalizing oxygen consumption to chamber volume (JO2) or to a specific respiratory control state (flux control ratio, FCR) as a reliable parameter of experimental quality. The method’s reliability was tested by comparing the ∆ab of laboratory-performed experiments (LAB, N = 9) to those of an ultramarathon field study (three sampling time-points: before competition (PRE, N = 7), immediately after (POST, N = 10) and 24 h after competition (REC; N = 10)). Our results show that ∆ab JO2 changed PRE-POST, but also for LAB-POST and LAB-REC, while all ∆ab FCR remained unchanged. Thus, we conclude that our method is reliable for assessing PLT mitochondrial function in LAB and field studies and after systemic stress conditions.

Turbulent jet ignition is seen as one of the most promising strategies to achieve stable lean-burn operation in modern spark-ignition engines thanks to its ability to promote rapid combustion. A nearly stoichiometric mixture is ignited in a small-volume pre-chamber, following which multiple hot turbulent jets are discharged in the main chamber to initiate combustion. In the present work, a detailed computational investigation on the turbulent combustion regime of premixed rich propane/air mixture in a quiescent divided chamber vessel is carried out, to study the characteristics of the jet flame without the uncertainties in mixing and turbulent conditions typical of real-engine operations. In particular, the paper investigates the dependency of flame propagation on nozzle diameter (4, 6, 8, 12 and 14 mm) and pre-chamber/main-chamber volume ratio (10% and 20%); CFD results are compared to the experimental outcomes. Results show that the combustion regime in the quiescent pre-chamber follows a well-stirred reaction mode, rendering the limitation in using conventional flamelet combustion models. Furthermore, due to the very high turbulence levels generated by the outflowing reacting jets, also the main chamber combustion develops in a well-stirred reactor type, confirming the need for a kinetics-based approach to combustion modelling. However, the picture is complicated by thickened flamelet conditions possibly being verified for some geometrical variations (nozzle diameter and pre-chamber volume). The results show a general good alignment with the experimental data in terms of both jet phasing and combustion duration, offering a renewed guideline for combustion simulations under quiescent and low Damköhler number conditions.
