Evan S. Connell (b. 1924–d. 2013) was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up there in a prosperous family with historical ties—reflected in his middle name, Shelby—to Confederate general Jo Shelby. Although his physician father expected his namesake son to join him in his medical practice, Connell, while at Dartmouth College, began to consider more creative options, including writing and making art. After a three-year stint in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II—he never left the country—Connell began writing down his experiences and finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas. On the Lawrence, Kansas, campus, he studied art and continued to write, under the tutelage of Ray B. West, who edited the Western Review. With aid from the G.I. Bill and encouragement from West, Connell successfully applied to Wallace Stegner’s first class of creative writing fellows at Stanford University. He spent another year in writing and art classes at Columbia University in New York. Ultimately, he saw more of a future in writing, though he kept up a practice of life drawing and painting for many years. Connell had an early run of published short stories, beginning in 1946. After a fallow period in California, Connell went to Paris in 1952, where he became acquainted with the founding editors of The Paris Review. The literary journal published three of Connell’s stories, including segments from Connell’s novel in progress, which eventually was titled Mrs. Bridge. By then, Connell had taken up residence in San Francisco. After rejection by several New York publishers, the Viking Press took on Connell, releasing a story collection in 1957 before cementing Connell’s reputation with Mrs. Bridge, a quietly evocative portrait of a prosperous, middle-American family, which became his most admired and lucrative work of fiction. Over the next five decades Connell veered into an extraordinary variety of works—fiction, nonfiction, history, and hybrid experiments that looked like epic poetry. This pattern of no pattern in the arc of Connell’s work, combined with his lack of interest in self-promotion, seemed to confuse the New York publishing world, and critics often cited his unpredictability as the cause of a kind of literary marginalization. His sprawling account of Custer at the Little Bighorn became hugely popular in the 1980s, raising his profile and reviving his reputation as a writer.

As information about COVID-19 safety behavior changed, people had to judge how likely others were to protect themselves through mask-wearing and vaccination seeking. In a large, campus-wide survey, we assessed whether University of Kansas students viewed others' protective behaviors as different from their own, how much students assumed others would share their beliefs and behaviors, and which individual differences were associated with those estimations. Participants in our survey (N = 1,704; 81.04% white, 64.08% female) evaluated how likely they and others were to wear masks on the University of Kansas campus, wear masks off-campus, and seek a vaccine. They also completed measures of political preference, numeracy, and preferences for risk in various contexts. We found that participants estimated that others would be less likely to engage in health safety behaviors than themselves, but that their estimations of others were widely shared. In addition, of all the individual differences we assessed, political preference displayed the most consistent associations across health behaviors. Not only was false uniqueness ubiquitous across different forms of COVID-19 safety behavior, it was indeed false - estimates of others' health behavior were lower than their actual rates. Understanding this relationship could allow for more accurate norm-setting and normalization of mask-wearing and vaccination.

PURPOSE The University of Kansas Cancer Center (KU Cancer Center) recently developed a data warehouse to Organize and Prioritize Trends to Inform KU Cancer Center (OPTIK). The OPTIK database aggregates and standardizes data collected across the bistate catchment area served by the KU Cancer Center. To improve the usability of the OPTIK database, we developed shinyOPTIK, a user-friendly, interactive web application for visualizing cancer risk factor and mortality rate data across the KU Cancer Center Catchment area. METHODS Data in the OPTIK database were first consolidated at the county level across the KU Cancer Center catchment area. Next, the shinyOPTIK development team met with the KU Cancer Center leadership to discuss the needs and priorities of the shinyOPTIK web application. shinyOPTIK was developed under the R Shiny framework and consists of a user interface (ui.R) and a web server (server.R). At present, s hinyOPTIK can be used to generate county-level geographical heatmaps; bar plots of demographic, screening, and risk factors; and line plots to visualize temporal trends at different Rural-Urban Continuum Codes (RUCCs), rural-urban status, metropolitan, or county levels across the KU Cancer Center catchment area. RESULTS Two examples, adult obesity prevalence and lung cancer mortality, are presented to illustrate how researchers can use shinyOPTIK. Each example is accompanied by post hoc visualizations to help explain key observations in terms of rural-urban disparities. CONCLUSION Although shinyOPTIK was developed to improve understanding of spatial and temporal trends across the population served by the KU Cancer Center, our hope is that the description of the steps involved in the creation of this tool along with open-source code for our application provided herein will serve as a guide for other research centers in the development of similar tools.

The Kent Award is given annually to a member of The Gerontological Society of America who best exemplifies the highest standards of professional leadership in gerontology through teaching, service, and interpretation of gerontology to the larger society.

Introduction. Mediastinitis is a deadly surgical site infection (SSI) after cardiac surgery. Although rare, mortality is as high as 47%. Best practices for infection prevention to eliminate this deadly complication must be identified. Surgical dressings impregnated with silver have been shown to reduce SSIs in other surgical specialties. This aim of this study is to determine if the routine use of silver surgical dressings is beneficial to prevent mediastinitis after cardiac surgery. Methods. A single-center retrospective study was performed on patients who underwent sternotomy from 2016 to 2018 at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Prior to June 2017, all cardiac surgical patients were treated with gauze surgical dressings and is designated Group A. The routine use of silver-impregnated surgical dressings was implemented in June 2017, patients after this change in practice are designated Group B. Patient characteristics and rates of deep and superficial sternal wound infections (SWI) were compared.  Results. There were 464 patients in Group A and 505 in Group B. There were seven SWIs in Group A (7/464, 1.5%) and five in Group B (5/505, 1%; p = 0.57). Of these, there was one deep SWI per group (p = 0.61) and six superficial SWIs in Group A compared to four in Group B (p = 0.74). Severe COPD was higher in Group A (p = 0.04) and peak glucose was higher in Group B (p = 0.02).  Conclusions.The analysis conferred no benefit with silver-impregnated surgical dressings to prevent mediastinitis. Choice of gauze surgical dressings may be preferable to reduce cost.

Due to social distancing precautions and the desire to protect clinical learners, the COVID-19 pandemic forced medical schools everywhere to implement more distanced and virtualized learning in their educational curriculums. More specifically, at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Salina, a regional medical campus, the impact of some of these changes were also seen and felt. The purpose of this study was to investigate the downstream effects of these curriculum changes from the perspectives and opinions of medical students attending a regional medical campus. To explore the study purpose, a mixed-methods, cross-sectional study that used an online survey with closed and open-ended questions was used. Additionally, because of unique curriculum characteristics depending on the year of the student, 1st and 2nd year students (phase I) were asked slightly different questions than students in their 3rd and 4th years (phase II). Closed-ended questions asked students about lecture experience, clinical learning development and time, study time, exam performance, collaborative learning experiences, and socialization/interactions with colleagues. Students answered in range of -3 to +3, negative numbers meaning a detrimental impact (or decrease in study time), and positive numbers being beneficial impact (or increase in study time). Open-ended questions asked students about improvements that could be made, unique class circumstances during the pandemic and any other relevant impact not covered in closed-ended questions. For phase I students, lecture experience, study time and exam performance resulted in no impact. However, collaborative learning and socialization with colleagues did result in a detrimental impact that was significant. For phase II learners, clinical skills development, time spent in clinical skills development and socialization with colleagues were detrimentally impacted. However, the amount of time spent on studying increased and exam performance benefited. These findings suggest that pandemic-related curriculum changes impact learners differently depending on the phase of medical they are in.               There are no conflicts of interest by either of the authors. This study has been approved by the University of Kansas Medical Center Institutional Review Board.

Abstract Purpose To report the recent rate of acute postoperative endophthalmitis following cataract surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) where postoperative topical antibiotics were excluded. Methods This was a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent phacoemulsification with or without intraocular lens insertion as standalone surgery from February 2018 through August 2020. Those undergoing combination surgeries were excluded. All patients received intracameral moxifloxacin at the conclusion of cataract surgery but were not prescribed postoperative topical antibiotics. Acute postoperative endophthalmitis was defined as occurring within six weeks after surgery. Results There were 2,218 standalone cataract surgeries performed on 1,418 patients. Zero cases of acute postoperative endophthalmitis were identified (0%). There were no systemic adverse reactions to intracameral moxifloxacin administration in the 41 patients with a preexisting fluoroquinolone allergy. Conclusion The recent rate of acute postoperative endophthalmitis following cataract surgery at KUMC using intracameral moxifloxacin without postoperative topical antibiotics is 0%.

Abstract Date Presented 04/13/21 University of Kansas Medical Center OT supports many community programs to reduce health disparity in our community. The COVID-19 pandemic created a need for alternative health promotion programs. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of implementing the I Can Do It (ICDI) program virtually. Once established, a pre–post descriptive study was completed to explore ICDI further. The results may have strong influence on OT practice for adapting and executing interventions virtually. BACKGROUND Without traditional in-person experiences due to COVID-19, dermatology residency applicants and programs had to search for new ways to get to know one another. Thus, many programs created or enhanced their social media accounts, specifically Instagram, providing an avenue for applicants. The Instagram Engagement Score (IES) is a tool that quantifies an Instagram account’s engagement. OBJECTIVE We assessed the factors that influence a dermatology residency program Instagram account's total followers count and IES. METHODS Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education-accredited dermatology residency programs in the United States were identified and evaluated on 3/6/2021-3/7/2021. Posts were categorized into educational, departmental, academic and professional, social, or other posts. RESULTS 78 residency programs have Instagram accounts. 69 accounts were active, or posting after November 2020. Other than posts, Instagram Stories was used most frequently (51%). 60 accounts opened in 2020. University of Miami had the most followers (N=2260) while University of Kansas had the highest IES (IES=23.76). Program location and affiliation did not affect total followers or IES. Utilizing Instagram TV (p=0.019) significantly increased total followers, but not IES. Using linear correlation, total posts and departmental posts correlated with increased total follower count (p<0.001, p=0.018 respectively) and IES (p<0.001, p=0.008 respectively). CONCLUSIONS Instagram is a valuable platform for a dermatology residency program’s self-promotion and recruitment following COVID-19. We recommend dermatology residency programs to open an Instagram account and make more posts, especially departmental content. CLINICALTRIAL
