Abstract Objective Resilience instruments specific to family caregivers (FCs) in cancer are limited. This study was designed to validate the 10-item Resilience Scale Specific to Cancer (RS-SC-10) in FCs using multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) analysis. Methods 382 FCs were enrolled from Be Resilient to Cancer Program (BRCP) and administered with RS-SC-10 and 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). MIRT was performed to evaluate item parameters while Generalized Additive Model (GAM) and Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) were performed to test the non-linear relationship between resilience (RS-SC-10) and Quality of Life (QoL, SF-36). Results RS-SC-10 retained 10 items with high multidimensional discrimination, monotonous thresholds and its original two-factor structure (Generic and Shift-Persist). Four latent resilience subgroups were identified and a non-linear dose–response pattern between resilience and QoL was confirmed (per-SD increase OR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.16–2.13, p = 0.0019). Conclusion RS-SC-10 is a brief and suitable resilience instrument for FCs in cancer. The resilience screening of patients and FCs can be performed simultaneously in clinical practice.

This study intends to design and verify the quality of a model that measures mathematical proficiency and aims to set the standards in measuring levels of proficiency in the subjects of measurement and geometry. Construct modeling was employed to design a mathematical proficiency measurement model which consists of the mathematical process and the dimensions of a conceptual structure. A total of 517 Secondary Year 1 students were selected from the big data to participate as test-takers. Design-based research encompassing four phases was used to verify the quality of the mathematical proficiency measurement model. A Multidimensional Random Coefficient Multinomial Logit model was used to examine the standards-setting of the mathematical proficiency measurement model. The results indicated that the two dimensions of mathematical proficiency can be further divided into five levels, from non-response/irrelevance to strategic/extended thinking and extended abstract structure for mathematical process and conceptual structural dimensions, respectively. The assessment tool covers 18 items with 15 multiple-choice items and three subjective items in measurement and geometry. Moreover, the results also demonstrated that the validity evidence associated with the internal structure of the multidimensional model is fit. Besides, reliability evidence, as well as item fit, is compliance with the quality of the mathematical proficiency measurement model as illustrated in analysis of the standard error of measurement and infit and outfit of the items. Finally, the researchers managed to set standards for the mathematical proficiency measurement model based on the assessment criterion results from the Wright Map. In conclusion, the standards-setting of the mathematical proficiency measurement model provides substantial information, particularly for measuring those students who are above the lowest level of mathematical proficiency because the error for estimating proficiency was low.

Multidimensional item response models are known to be difficult to estimate, with a variety of estimation and modeling strategies being proposed to handle the difficulties. While some previous studies have considered the performance of these estimation methods, they typically include only one or two methods, or a small number of factors. In this paper, we report on a large simulation study of between-item multidimensional IRT estimation methods, considering five different methods, a variety of sample sizes, and up to eight factors. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the methods’ relative performance, as well as each individual method’s strengths and weaknesses. The study results lead us to make recommendations for applied research, related to which estimation methods should be used under various scenarios.

The growing interest in research on psychedelic consumption in naturalistic contexts and their possible medical and therapeutic benefits requires assessment of the relationships between the substance and the individual who consumes it (set) and its context of use (setting). This study provides a novel measurement scale for the setting of Ayahuasca consumption, the Setting Questionnaire for the Ayahuasca Experience (SQAE), and examines its psychometric properties. Construction of the scale began with a literature review, followed by interviews on 19 Ayahuasca users from different backgrounds and different consumption experience, and an online survey for quantitative data collection (n = 2,994). Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA) was used to investigate the questionnaire's dimensional structure with (n = 1,497, half of the sample), and multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) was used to compare the fit of the theoretical dimensions with the EGA proposed dimensions (n = 1,497, independent other half). EGA identified six dimensions, which corresponded partially to the theorized model (Leadership, Decoration, Infrastructure, Comfort, Instruction, and Social). The MIRT comparison found that the proposed theoretical model fit significantly better than the EGA model, providing support for the former (χ2/df = 1,967; CFI = 0,972; TLI = 0,969; RMSEA = 0,059; WRMR = 1,087). Our findings present evidence of validity of this instrument, justifying its use for future research on the influence of the setting during the ayahuasca experience. Its findings may provide a basis for expanding the settings investigated in the use of psychedelics in general.
