We derive new representations for the generalised Jacobian of a locally Lipschitz map between finite dimensional real Euclidean spaces as the lower limit (i.e., limit inferior) of the classical derivative of the map where it exists. The new representations lead to significantly shorter proofs for the basic properties of the subgradient and the generalised Jacobian including the chain rule. We establish that a sequence of locally Lipschitz maps between finite dimensional Euclidean spaces converges to a given locally Lipschitz map in the L-topology—that is, the weakest refinement of the sup norm topology on the space of locally Lipschitz maps that makes the generalised Jacobian a continuous functional—if and only if the limit superior of the sequence of directional derivatives of the maps in a given vector direction coincides with the generalised directional derivative of the given map in that direction, with the convergence to the limit superior being uniform for all unit vectors. We then prove our main result that the subspace of Lipschitz C ∞ maps between finite dimensional Euclidean spaces is dense in the space of Lipschitz maps equipped with the L-topology, and, for a given Lipschitz map, we explicitly construct a sequence of Lipschitz C ∞ maps converging to it in the L-topology, allowing global smooth approximation of a Lipschitz map and its differential properties. As an application, we obtain a short proof of the extension of Green’s theorem to interval-valued vector fields. For infinite dimensions, we show that the subgradient of a Lipschitz map on a Banach space is upper continuous, and, for a given real-valued Lipschitz map on a separable Banach space, we construct a sequence of Gateaux differentiable functions that converges to the map in the sup norm topology such that the limit superior of the directional derivatives in any direction coincides with the generalised directional derivative of the Lipschitz map in that direction.

AbstractLet $$\mathscr {H}$$ H be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space and $$\mathscr {D}$$ D the set of density matrices on $$\mathscr {H}$$ H , i.e., the positive operators with trace 1. Our goal in this note is to identify a probability measure u on $$\mathscr {D}$$ D that can be regarded as the uniform distribution over $$\mathscr {D}$$ D . We propose a measure on $$\mathscr {D}$$ D , argue that it can be so regarded, discuss its properties, and compute the joint distribution of the eigenvalues of a random density matrix distributed according to this measure.

We present a formal geometric framework for the study of adiabatic quantum mechanics for arbitrary finite-dimensional non-degenerate Hamiltonians. This framework generalizes earlier holonomy interpretations of the geometric phase to non-cyclic states appearing for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We start with an investigation of the space of non-degenerate operators on a finite-dimensional state space. We then show how the energy bands of a Hamiltonian family form a covering space. Likewise, we show that the eigenrays form a bundle, a generalization of a principal bundle, which admits a natural connection yielding the (generalized) geometric phase. This bundle provides in addition a natural generalization of the quantum geometric tensor and derived tensors, and we show how it can incorporate the non-geometric dynamical phase as well. We finish by demonstrating how the bundle can be recast as a principal bundle, so that both the geometric phases and the permutations of eigenstates can be expressed simultaneously by means of standard holonomy theory.

We define perfect ideals, near perfect ideals and upper bounded ideals of a finite-dimensional Lie superalgebra, and study the properties of these three kinds of ideals through their relevant sequences. We prove that a Lie superalgebra is solvable if and only if its maximal perfect ideal is zero, or its quotient superalgebra by the maximal perfect ideal is solvable. We also show that a Lie superalgebra is nilpotent if and only if its maximal near perfect ideal is zero. Moreover, we prove that a nilpotent Lie superalgebra has only one upper bounded ideal, which is the nilpotent Lie superalgebra itself.

This paper deals with the stabilization of a class of uncertain nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with a dynamic controller governed by a linear 1−d heat partial differential equation (PDE). The control operates at one boundary of the domain of the heat controller, while at the other end of the boundary, a Neumann term is injected into the ODE plant. We achieve the desired global exponential stabilization goal by using a recent infinite-dimensional backstepping design for coupled PDE-ODE systems combined with a high-gain state feedback and domination approach. The stabilization result of the coupled system is established under two main restrictions: the first restriction concerns the particular classical form of our ODE, which contains, in addition to a controllable linear part, a second uncertain nonlinear part verifying a lower triangular linear growth condition. The second restriction concerns the length of the domain of the PDE which is restricted.

Abstract We introduce an infinite variant of hypersurface support for finite-dimensional, noncommutative complete intersections. We show that hypersurface support defines a support theory for the big singularity category $\operatorname {Sing}(R)$ , and that the support of an object in $\operatorname {Sing}(R)$ vanishes if and only if the object itself vanishes. Our work is inspired by Avramov and Buchweitz’ support theory for (commutative) local complete intersections. In the companion piece [27], we employ hypersurface support for infinite-dimensional modules, and the results of the present paper, to classify thick ideals in stable categories for a number of families of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras.

Abstract The Levi theorem tells us that every finite-dimensional Lie algebra is the semi-direct product of a semi-simple Lie algebra and a solvable Lie algebra. Brieskorn gave the connection between simple Lie algebras and simple singularities. Simple Lie algebras have been well understood, but not the solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. Therefore, it is important to establish connections between singularities and solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. In this paper, we give a new connection between nilpotent Lie algebras and nilradicals of derivation Lie algebras of isolated complete intersection singularities. As an application, we obtain the correspondence between the nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension less than or equal to 7 and the nilradicals of derivation Lie algebras of isolated complete intersection singularities with modality less than or equal to 1. Moreover, we give a new characterization theorem for zero-dimensional simple complete intersection singularities.

We develop a framework to analyze the dynamics of a finite-dimensional quantum system S in contact with a reservoir R. The full, interacting SR dynamics is unitary. The reservoir has a stationary state but otherwise dissipative dynamics. We identify a main part of the full dynamics, which approximates it for small values of the SR coupling constant, uniformly for all times t≥0. The main part consists of explicit oscillating and decaying parts. We show that the reduced system evolution is Markovian for all times. The technical novelty is a detailed analysis of the link between the dynamics and the spectral properties of the generator of the SR dynamics, based on Mourre theory. We allow for SR interactions with little regularity, meaning that the decay of the reservoir correlation function only needs to be polynomial in time, improving on the previously required exponential decay. In this work we distill the structural and technical ingredients causing the characteristic features of oscillation and decay of the SR dynamics. In the companion paper [27] we apply the formalism to the concrete case of an N-level system linearly coupled to a spatially infinitely extended thermal bath of non-interacting Bosons.

A finite-dimensional quantum system is coupled to a bath of oscillators in thermal equilibrium at temperature T>0. We show that for fixed, small values of the coupling constant λ, the true reduced dynamics of the system is approximated by the completely positive, trace preserving Markovian semigroup generated by the Davies-Lindblad generator. The difference between the true and the Markovian dynamics is O(|λ|1/4) for all times, meaning that the solution of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation is approximating the true dynamics to accuracy O(|λ|1/4) for all times. Our method is based on a recently obtained expansion of the full system-bath propagator. It applies to reservoirs with correlation functions decaying in time as 1/t4 or faster, which is a significant improvement relative to the previously required exponential decay.
