Since the students themselves are responsible for their learning in the asynchronous online learning process, there needs to be a power attracting them to the online learning environment. Humor, which has an educational power, can be evaluated in this perspective. Instructional multimedia is one of the most essential components in the asynchronous online learning process because it enables students to continue their studies individually. The chapter aims at suggesting a way for designing instructional multimedia using humorous elements for asynchronous online learning. Attention, recall, feedback, and humor breaks can be listed as advantages of integrating humorous elements in instructional multimedia. For this purpose, humorous elements can be easily added to instructional multimedia for asynchronous online learning. This chapter also focuses on the question of how to integrate humorous elements into instructional multimedia and offers various recommendations for future studies within this context.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the influence of learning presence and self-directed learning ability on nursing students’ learning satisfaction according to the online learning method.Methods: The participants of this study were 167 nursing students attending three universities in different cities. The data were collected from July 16 to July 23, 2021, via an online self-reported questionnaire. Using SPSS WIN 27.0, data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and a multiple regression analysis.Results: The most effective online learning method experienced by nursing students was asynchronous online learning according to 58.2% of the respondents, while 30.3% of the respondents answered synchronous online learning. The main merit of asynchronous online learning was that it was possible to listen repeatedly (61.7%) to lectures, and the top advantage of synchronous online learning was that the location of the class was free (53.3%). In asynchronous online learning, the factors that significantly affected nursing students’ learning satisfaction were cognitive presence (β=.60, p<.001) and emotional presence (β=.25, p<.001). These variables accounted for 56% of their learning satisfaction (F=54.12, p<.001). Similarly, cognitive presence (β=.64, p<.001) and emotional presence (β=.21, p=.001) in synchronous online learning, were the factors cited for significantly affecting learning satisfaction. The explanatory power was 62% (F=69.19, p<.001).Conclusions: In conclusion, it was found that cognitive and social presence from the learning presence factors in both asynchronous and synchronous online learning influence and enhance nursing students’ learning satisfaction. Therefore, these results provide important data for future online class design in nursing education.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and universities across the world have had to switch to online learning, which is offered either synchronously or asynchronously. This study examined the role of self-regulation on students’ performance in each of these modes by comparing the use of self-regulation skills between high and low achievers in each mode and assessing the relationships of using these skills with students’ performance. The data were collected from students who enrolled in a data structures course in fall 2020 in either synchronous or asynchronous mode. The results show that self-regulation is an essential factor for learners’ success in both modes of online learning. However, there was a variance of using self-regulating learning strategies between students in synchronous and asynchronous modes.

The aims of this study are to investigate the perceptions of two vocational high school students majoring Animation and Accounting about asynchronous online learning during pandemic and how they overcome the challenges faced. This study used qualitative exploratory research design by conducting observation, interview and documentation to get rich data of the subject under focus. Moreover, the researcher used thematic analysis to analyse the data collected by following six steps proposed by Braun et al. (2019). The findings showed that asynchronous online learning strategies seemed to not fit the participants. The students more preferred learning that is conducted synchronously which for some students is perceived as a burden as they have to deal with the problem of internet data. Other findings also indicated that students who still had problem with material given were likely to have discussion with other students as an effort to overcome one of the challenges faced.

The ubiquitous use of digital technology brings the inevitability of online learning and its varying degree of teacher-student interactions, both in synchronous and asynchronous online learning modes. This present study reviews the strength and weaknesses of the two online learning modes to propose the use of blended online learning as the combination that harvests the strengths of asynchronous and synchronous modes of online learning with the opportunity to cover each other's weaknesses. The recent study employed Aveyard's literature review model as a method for gaining a comprehensive understanding of a specific topic using data and arguments from previous studies. Thirty-six articles published in reputable international journals or accredited national journals published in 2015-2020 were used. This review revealed that blended online learning combines the strengths of synchronous and synchronous learning in terms of authentic learning activities, flexibility, access, interaction, development of critical thinking, comprehension, and mastery, and student-centered nature of the learning. However, it still retains challenges in terms of network and connection issues from both online learning modes. This finding implies that blended learning can be the middle-ground to facilitate online learning with benefits from both synchronous and asynchronous online modes by minimizing the students’ exposure to the weaknesses from the two modes.

Online learning could have negative impacts on learning processes and outcomes. The condition needed to be resolved through the implementation of appropriate online learning approaches. The research was aimed at describing the effectiveness of the implementation of asynchronous and synchronous online learning approaches in students’ learning outcomes and skills of using Microsoft Excel on the Advanced Statistics of Mathematics Education Department from one of the universities in Central Kalimantan. The learning approaches were integrated with mathematics problems, Minitab software and Microsoft Excel, and videos. The research design was experimental research using a one-group posttest-only design. The subjects were chosen by clustered random sampling. They were 18 students of the department in the 2020/2021 academic year. The instruments were a lesson plan, several videos, textbooks, e-books, questionnaires, mathematics problems, mid-test, and final-test. The students learned using textbooks, e-books, and videos and solved the problems independently. Then, they discussed the solutions online in groups through their WhatsApp group (asynchronously). The problem solutions were presented by the students using a class on WhatsApp or video conference platforms (synchronous). The authors collected data by administering the questionnaire and the tests and analyzed the data using a -test and a Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the implementation of the approaches was effective in enhancing the learning outcomes and skills of using Microsoft Excel. Furthermore, most students positively responded to learn independently and all the students positively responded to analyze data using the software.
