Project delivery on time, with agreed quality and assigned budget, is the desire of project-based companies. Time, quality, and cost are determinants of project success; however, organisations suffer from achieving these three success criteria at the same time. Failures in project delivery cause the loss of the competitive advantage. The recent digital technologies introduce smart contracts to supply chain (SC) operations for improving SC processes. Project procurement is the area for smart contract implementation to deliver successful projects and gain sustainable competitive advantages. The aim of this study was in explaining how smart contracts benefit project organisations through project procurement. Qualitative research design guided this research with phenomenology. Semi-structured interviews generated the data. The obtained research data were analysed with thematic, textual, and discourse analysis. Published industry reports were used to triangulate the data. This study demonstrated an integrated relationship model to answer the research question. The research findings initially identified the fact that smart contracts improve procurement efficiency through cost, time, and quality. Secondly, smart contracts build a trust-less platform where reliability is delivered and reinforced with transparency, traceability, and security. This study found that enhanced procurement efficiency and reliability meet requirements to gain sustainable competitive advantages. This study intends to contribute to industry practices and future research. The correlation of project procurement management success, smart contracts, and sustainable competitive advantages are expected to guide feature research and business practices.

This study explored the impact of considering health and safety (H&S) in the construction procurement process based on the extent of H&S implementation on projects. Underpinned by information integration and rational decision-making theories, the study evaluated how the integration of H&S objectives into the overall project objectives, and the subsequent consideration of H&S matters in procurement decisions, influence H&S implementation on projects. Data were collected using questionnaire surveys from 287 respondents in Ghana who had direct involvement in the project procurement process. The survey explored the extent of H&S integration into the procurement process and its subsequent impact on H&S implementation. Path analysis was carried out to determine the causal relationships between the various procurement processes and H&S implementation. The results demonstrate that setting H&S objectives and integrating H&S into the planning stage decisions have a significant impact on the extent to which H&S matters are considered in the tendering and tender evaluation stages, as well as the H&S provisions in conditions of contracts. It also showed that adequate H&S consideration in these procurement stages subsequently influences H&S consideration in contract administration and monitoring and ultimately influences the extent of H&S implementation. These findings demonstrate the importance of integrating H&S in all aspects of construction procurement to promote H&S implementation on projects.

A project procurement method (PPM) defines the roles and responsibilities of the participates involved in the construction project. Selecting a suitable PPM is one of the critical issues to achieve the success of a construction project. The selection of PPM is a typical multi-criteria decision-making problem under uncertainty. Moreover, interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set (IVIFS) is a useful tool for depicting uncertainty of the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems. In this paper, the authors consider the PPM selection under IVIFS circumstance. Firstly, they introduce the concept of Spearman rank correlation coefficient (SRCC) between two IVIFSs and then calculate the SRCC between the ideal alternative and each alternative. The ideal option of PPM is determined according to the computed value of SRCC. Overall, the proposed method can avoid the calculation of the criteria weights, and the selection process is simple and straightforward. Finally, a real-world infrastructure project PPM selection has been illustrated the applicability and effectiveness of this methodology.

Risk management is very vital in the construction industry as the industry is full of uncertainties. Every organization follows a risk management process in their projects especially if a project is complex and has a lot of technicalities, but the method of practice may differ in every organization and how importantly used in projects. The COVID-19 lockdown has created serious impacts on the supply chains of the industry. Hence, the study aimed to establish the importance of risk management in the procurement systems by assessing the impacts due to the pandemic lockdown. The data collection was limited in accessing the industry due to the guidelines issued by the government. The study used secondary data collection through a literature survey and a questionnaire survey. The identified risks were qualitatively analyzed using descriptive scales of likely hood and impact. This study has established the importance of risk management in procurement systems and the importance of risk management during natural disasters and other uncertain times. At times when everything comes to a halt and no movement is allowed, it’s important to be prepared to save a business from downfall, in case of situations like COVID19 and to mitigate project-specific risks
