Abstract Ferromagnetic insulators have received widespread attention for applications in novel low power consumption spintronic devices. Further optimizing the robust ferromagnetic insulating and developing multifunctional ferromagnetic insulator by integrating other magnetic property can not only ease or pave the way for actual application, but also provide an additional freedom degree for device designing. In this work, by introducing antiferromagnetic CoO into ferromagnetic insulator LaMnO3, we have constructed (1-x)LaMnO3:xCoO composite thin films. The films simultaneously show robust ferromagnetic insulator characteristics and large exchange bias. For x = 0.5 sample, the resistivity is 120 Ω·cm at 250 K while the magnetization is 100 emu/cm3 and the exchange bias field is -2200 Oe at 10 K. Especially, the blocking temperature is up to 140 K. Synchrotron radiation x-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the coexistence of Mn3+, Mn2+, Co2+ and Co3+, arising from interfacial charge transfer and space charge/defect trapping, should be responsible for the enhanced and integrated multifunctional magnetic properties.

Abstract We characterized CVD-grown graphene with high single-crystallinity on Ir(111)/α-Al2O3(0001) by photoelectron momentum microscopy. A multi-functional photoelectron momentum microscope (PMM), which is installed with element-specific valence band photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, is a complementary characterization tool to conventional methods, such as Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, for comprehensive and quantitative characterization of graphene/Ir(111). Using PMM, we characterized the properties of CVD-grown graphene including the single-crystallinity, number of layers, crystal orientation, and degree of interaction between graphene and Ir(111) and clarified the relationship between these properties and the CVD growth conditions.

Limonitic layers of the regolith, which are often stockpiled as waste materials at laterite mines, commonly contain significant concentrations of valuable base metals, such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese. There is currently considerable demand for these transition metals, and this is projected to continue to increase (alongside their commodity values) during the next few decades, due in the most part to their use in battery and renewable technologies. Limonite bioprocessing is an emerging technology that often uses acidophilic prokaryotes to catalyse the oxidation of zero-valent sulphur coupled to the reduction of Fe (III) and Mn (IV) minerals, resulting in the release of target metals. Chromium-bearing minerals, such as chromite, where the metal is present as Cr (III), are widespread in laterite deposits. However, there are also reports that the more oxidised and more biotoxic form of this metal [Cr (VI)] may be present in some limonites, formed by the oxidation of Cr (III) by manganese (IV) oxides. Bioleaching experiments carried out in laboratory-scale reactors using limonites from a laterite mine in New Caledonia found that solid densities of ∼10% w/v resulted in complete inhibition of iron reduction by acidophiles, which is a critical reaction in the reductive dissolution process. Further investigations found this to be due to the release of Cr (VI) in the acidic liquors. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy analysis of the limonites used found that between 3.1 and 8.0% of the total chromium in the three limonite samples used in experiments was present in the raw materials as Cr (VI). Microbial inhibition due to Cr (VI) could be eliminated either by adding limonite incrementally or by the addition of ferrous iron, which reduces Cr (VI) to less toxic Cr (III), resulting in rates of extraction of cobalt (the main target metal in the experiments) of >90%.

Fluorinated graphitic layers with good mechanical and chemical stability, polar C–F bonds, and tunable bandgap are attractive for a variety of applications. In this work, we investigated the photolysis of fluorinated graphites with interlayer embedded acetonitrile, which is the simplest representative of the acetonitrile-containing photosensitizing family. The samples were continuously illuminated in situ with high-brightness non-monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Changes in the compositions of the samples were monitored using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The NEXAFS N K-edge spectra showed that acetonitrile dissociates to form HCN and N2 molecules after exposure to the white beam for 2 s, and the latter molecules completely disappear after exposure for 200 s. The original composition of fluorinated matrices CF0.3 and CF0.5 is changed to CF0.10 and GF0.17, respectively. The highly fluorinated layers lose fluorine atoms together with carbon neighbors, creating atomic vacancies. The edges of vacancies are terminated with the nitrogen atoms and form pyridinic and pyrrolic units. Our in situ studies show that the photolysis products of acetonitrile depend on the photon irradiation duration and composition of the initial CFx matrix. The obtained results evaluate the radiation damage of the acetonitrile-intercalated fluorinated graphites and the opportunities to synthesize nitrogen-doped graphene materials.

Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy with lateral resolution from the submillimeter to submicrometer range, we investigate the homogeneity, the chemical composition, and the nickel 3d- oxygen 2p charge transfer in topotactically reduced epitaxial PrNiO2+δ thin films. To this end, we use x-ray absorption spectroscopy in a standard experimental setup and in a soft x-ray microscope to probe the element and spatially resolved electronic structure modifications through changes of the nickel-2p and oxygen-1s absorption spectrum upon soft-chemistry reduction. We find that the reduction process is laterally homogeneous across a partially reduced PrNiO2+δ thin film sample for length scales down to 50 nm.

Abstract We characterized the optical and electronic properties of chalcopyrite-type Cu(Al,In)Se2, which is a candidate for wide-bandgap solar cell materials. The bandgap energy was determined from diffuse reflectance spectra. The band gap energy increased from 1.00 eV for CuInSe2 to 2.61 eV for CuAlSe2 with an increase in the Al content. The ionization energy corresponding to the energy levels of the valence band maximum (VBM) was determined using photoemission yield spectroscopy (PYS). The VBM level of the Cu(Al,In)Se2 system stayed relatively constant, but the conduction band minimum (CBM) level increased with increasing Al content. To analyze the local structures of Cu and In atoms in Cu(Al,In)Se2, Cu and In K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra were measured at SPring-8. We discuss the crystallographic characteristics of Cu(Al,In)Se2 based on the results of the XAFS analyses and a comparison of the phase diagrams of the Cu2Se-Al2Se3, Cu2Se-In2Se3, and Cu2Se-Ga2Se3 systems.
