Though literature in family perpetuity and sustainability is well documented from the advanced economies, there is scarcity of insights from emerging markets where this research relates. The study, therefore, sought to investigate, understand, and interpret the underlying drivers of sustainability in small family businesses using the stewardship theory paradigm in the Nigerian family business environment. A qualitative method with 41 in-depth interviews involving owners and managers of family-owned small and medium businesses was conducted. The study empirically shows that there is an interrelationship between family structure and business sustainability; hence, the practice of polygamy was found to be inimical to family business success and sustainability. Building on the stewardship theory, the paper develops a model of sustainability for small and medium family businesses. The study contributes to the theoretical literature on stewardship and family business sustainability.

Abstract In 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak has had severe economic and social consequences all over the planet. Traditional national health systems have been unable to predict and to provide a decision support system able to coordinate an effective response to the outbreak and to stop the rapid spread of this disease. In this current manuscript, we have decided to focus our analysis on Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs). While some SMBs have survived, many others, particularly in urban areas, have had to shut down as a direct decision of government restrictions. Our study presents a decision support system based on Artificial Intelligence which helps governments to prioritize the closures of SMBs located in a city. Indeed, the decision to shut down may vary according to the relative danger that the business premises represent as a social gathering point and its benefits for the local economy. In this vein, we analyse 3 different scenarios which assume different financial and social costs. The visualization of the results on a city map provides additional value for the decision-making process. The Urban Decision Support System is tested by two case studies: Barcelona and New York City. This research has implications for practitioners to support their decision to close-down the economies in the event of another large-scale outbreak. It has also research implications as new evidence that data analytics could be an additional and valuable source of information for decision support processes.

To achieve a meaningful pace of economic growth, most developing countries throughout the world embark on various policy reforms, and one of the policy reforms adopted in Nigeria was globalization and trade liberalization. While such policies have not provided the desired effects due to their linkage effect, the adoption and implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to supplement government efforts in these economies has brought considerable results. However, this technical advancement is expected to have a rapid impact on Nigeria's economic development. The policy on ICT adoption began shortly after the civilian regime took control in the year 2000. The country's licensed telecommunication service providers have had some noticeable macroeconomic effects, such as job creation and the expansion of the scope of small and medium businesses, faster service delivery, lower transportation costs, increased security, and higher national output, as well as an increase in teledensity of both fixed and mobile lines. The model's findings revealed that current telecommunications investment had no effect on GDP growth, but that investments made in the preceding two years had a considerable impact on current GDP, even though government spending slowed growth. A similar discovery was made about computer usage and how it influences investment decisions in Nigeria's telecommunications sector.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected global economies due to lockdowns, business closures, and travel and other restrictions. To control the spread of the virus, several countries, including Australia, imposed strict border restrictions and lockdown measures. Accordingly, international borders have been closed, and all incoming international passengers are mandated to a 14-day hotel quarantine. Residents’ movements and businesses have been limited to essential services only. Employees have been directed to work from home while businesses moved to a remote working model. Due to such stringent measures, small and medium businesses such as cafes, restaurants, hotels, childcare centers, and tourism-based institutions incurred heavy losses, pushing a considerable portion of such small businesses to close. The airlines, education, tourism, and hospitality sector were the worst impacted among all. Due to such closures and associated effects of COVID-19, the unemployment rates are assumed to be significantly increased in countries like Australia. However, a study investigating this unemployment and reporting its status does not exist for Australia. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of COVID-19 control measures such as travel restriction and lockdown on Australia’s employment status and labor markets. The data for the local transport network, unemployment rates and impacts on the tourism industry in Australia were extracted from the public data sources to assess the unemployment rates at both national and state-wide levels. Further, we also looked into the rehabilitation measures by the Australian government, such as the Job Keeper and Job Seeker programs in March 2020, that aim to provide support to people who are unable to run their businesses or have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Overall, we observed that despite the global crisis, the Australian unemployment rate has reduced in the last year.
