While it is well-established that bone responds dynamically to mechanical loading, the effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) on cranial bone composition are unclear. We hypothesized that repeated mTBI (rmTBI) would change the microstructure of cranial bones, without gross skull fractures. To address this, young adult female Piebald Viral Glaxo rats received sham, 1x, 2x or 3x closed-head mTBIs delivered at 24h intervals, using a weight drop device custom built for reproducible impact. Skull bones were collected at 2 or 10 weeks after the final injury/sham procedure, imaged by micro computed tomography and analyzed at predetermined regions of interest. In the interparietal bone, proximal to the injury site, modest increases in bone thickness was observed at 2 weeks, particularly following 3x mTBI. By 10 weeks, 2x mTBI induced a robust increase in the volume and thickness of the interparietal bone, alongside a corresponding decrease in the volume of marrow cavities in the diploe region. In contrast, neither parietal nor frontal skull samples were affected by rmTBI. Our findings demonstrate time- and location-dependent effects of rmTBI on cranial bone structure, highlighting a need to consider microstructural alterations to cranial bone when assessing the consequences of rmTBI.

Vulnerability to atmospheric carbonation is one of the major durability concerns for limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) concrete due to its relatively low overall alkalinity. In this study, the natural carbonation behaviors of ternary ordinary Portland cement-metakaolin-limestone (OPC-MK-LS) blends containing various sulfate salts (i.e., anhydrous CaSO4, Na2SO4, and K2SO4) are studied, with the aim of revealing the influence of alkali cations (Na+, K+). Detailed analyses on the hydrated phase assemblage, composition, microstructure, and pore structure of LC3 pastes prior to and post indoor carbonation are conducted. The results show that the incorporation of sulfate salts accelerates the setting and strength gain of LC3 pastes, likely through enhancement of ettringite formation, but undermines its later age strength achievement due to the deleterious effect of alkali cations (Na+, K+) on late age OPC hydration. The carbonation resistance of LC3 systems is considerably undermined, particularly with the incorporation of Na2SO4 or K2SO4 salts, due to the simultaneous pore coarsening effect and reduced CO2-binding capacity. The carbonation-induced phase and microstructural alterations of LC3 pastes are discussed and compared with those of reference OPC pastes.

AbstractKidney structural abnormalities are common features of Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) patients that lead to a progressive decline in renal function. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides useful information on renal microstructures but it has not been applied to these patients. This study investigated using DTI to detect renal abnormalities in BBS patients with no overt renal dysfunction. Ten BBS subjects with estimated glomerular filtration rates over 60 ml/min/1.73m2 and 14 individuals matched for age, gender, body mass index and renal function were subjected to high-field DTI. Fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean, radial and axial diffusivity were evaluated from renal cortex and medulla. Moreover, the corticomedullary differentiation of each DTI parameter was compared between groups. Only cortical FA statistically differed between BBS patients and controls (p = 0.033), but all the medullary DTI parameters discriminated between the two groups with lower FA (p < 0.001) and axial diffusivity (p = 0.021) and higher mean diffusivity (p = 0.043) and radial diffusivity (p < 0.001) in BBS patients compared with controls. Corticomedullary differentiation values were significantly reduced in BBS patients. Thus, DTI is a valuable tool for investigating microstructural alterations in renal disorders when kidney functionality is preserved.

Background Systemic lupus erythematosus is often accompanied with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Neuroimaging evidence indicated that microstructural white matter (WM) abnormalities play role in the neuropathological mechanism. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies allows the assessment of the microstructural integrity of WM tracts, but existing findings were inconsistent. This present study aimed to conduct a coordinate‐based meta‐analysis (CBMA) to identify statistical consensus of DTI studies in SLE. Methods Relevant studies that reported the differences of fractional anisotropy (FA) between SLE patients and healthy controls (HC) were searched systematically. Only studies reported the results in Talairach or Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) coordinates were included. The anisotropic effect size version of signed differential mapping (AES-SDM) was applied to detect WM alterations in SLE. Results Totally, five studies with seven datasets which included 126 patients and 161 HC were identified. The pooled meta-analysis demonstrated that SLE patients exhibited significant FA reduction in the left striatum and bilateral inferior network, mainly comprised the corpus callosum (CC), bilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), bilateral anterior thalamic projections, bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), left inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF), and left insula. No region with higher FA was identified. Conclusions Disorders of the immune system might lead to subtle WM microstructural alterations in SLE, which might be related with cognitive deficits or emotional distress symptoms. This provides a better understanding of the pathological mechanism of microstructural brain abnormalities in SLE.
