The majority of fMRI studies investigating somatotopic body representations in the human cortex have used either block or phase-encoding stimulation designs. Event-related (ER) designs allow for more natural and flexible stimulation sequences, while enabling the independent estimation of responses to different body parts in the same cortical location. Here we compared an efficiency-optimized fast ER design (2s inter stimulus interval, ISI) to a slow ER design (8s ISI) for mapping fingertip voxelwise tuning properties in the sensorimotor cortex of 6 participants at 7 Tesla. The fast ER design resulted in similar, but more robust, estimates compared to the slow ER design. Concatenating the fast and slow ER data, we demonstrate in each individual brain the existence of two separate somatotopically-organized representations of the fingertips, one in S1 on the post-central gyrus and the other at the border of the motor and pre-motor cortices on the pre-central gyrus. In both post-central and pre-central representations, fingertip tuning width increases progressively, from narrowly-tuned Brodmann areas 3b and 4a respectively, towards parietal and frontal regions responding equally to all fingertips.

BACKGROUND: Natural SARS-CoV-2 infection elicits strong protection against reinfection with the Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), and Delta (B.1.617.2) variants. However, the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant harbors multiple mutations that can mediate immune evasion. We estimated effectiveness of prior infection in preventing reinfection (PES) with Omicron and other SARS-CoV-2 variants in Qatar. METHODS: PES was estimated using the test-negative, case-control study design, employing a methodology that was recently investigated and validated for derivation of robust estimates for PES. Cases (PCR-positive persons with a variant infection) and controls (PCR-negative persons) were exact-matched by sex, 10-year age group, nationality, and calendar time of PCR test, to control for known differences in the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 infection in Qatar. RESULTS: PES against symptomatic reinfection was estimated at 90.2% (95% CI: 60.2-97.6) for Alpha, 84.8% (95% CI: 74.5-91.0) for Beta, 92.0% (95% CI: 87.9-94.7) for Delta, and 56.0% (95% CI: 50.6-60.9) for Omicron. Only 1 Alpha, 2 Beta, 0 Delta, and 2 Omicron reinfections progressed to severe COVID-19. None progressed to critical or fatal COVID-19. PES against hospitalization or death due to reinfection was estimated at 69.4% (95% CI: -143.6-96.2) for Alpha, 88.0% (95% CI: 50.7-97.1) for Beta, 100% (95% CI: 43.3-99.8) for Delta, and 87.8% (95% CI: 47.5-97.1) for Omicron. CONCLUSIONS: Protection afforded by prior infection in preventing symptomatic reinfection with Alpha, Beta, or Delta is robust, at about 90%. While such protection against reinfection with Omicron is lower, it is still considerable at nearly 60%. Prior-infection protection against hospitalization or death at reinfection appears robust, regardless of variant.

Main-sequence stars with convective envelopes often appear larger and cooler than predicted by standard models of stellar evolution for their measured masses. This is believed to be caused by stellar activity. In a recent study, accurate measurements were published for the K-type components of the 1.62-day detached eclipsing binary EPIC 219511354, showing the radii and temperatures for both stars to be affected by these discrepancies. This is a rare example of a system in which the age and chemical composition are known, by virtue of being a member of the well-studied open cluster Ruprecht 147 (age~3 Gyr, [Fe/H] = +0.10). Here, we report a detailed study of this system with nonstandard models incorporating magnetic inhibition of convection. We show that these calculations are able to reproduce the observations largely within their uncertainties, providing robust estimates of the strength of the magnetic fields on both stars: 1600 ± 130 G and 1830 ± 150 G for the primary and secondary, respectively. Empirical estimates of the magnetic field strengths based on the measured X-ray luminosity of the system are roughly consistent with these predictions, supporting this mechanism as a possible explanation for the radius and temperature discrepancies.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has a complex transcriptome characterised by multiple, nested sub genomic RNAs used to express structural and accessory proteins. Long-read sequencing technologies such as nanopore direct RNA sequencing can recover full-length transcripts, greatly simplifying the assembly of structurally complex RNAs. However, these techniques do not detect the 5′ cap, thus preventing reliable identification and quantification of full-length, coding transcript models. Here we used Nanopore ReCappable Sequencing (NRCeq), a new technique that can identify capped full-length RNAs, to assemble a complete annotation of SARS-CoV-2 sgRNAs and annotate the location of capping sites across the viral genome. We obtained robust estimates of sgRNA expression across cell lines and viral isolates and identified novel canonical and non-canonical sgRNAs, including one that uses a previously un-annotated leader-to-body junction site. The data generated in this work constitute a useful resource for the scientific community and provide important insights into the mechanisms that regulate the transcription of SARS-CoV-2 sgRNAs.

In leaf gas exchange measurements, cuticular conductance to water (g) is indistinguishable from and included in stomatal conductance to water vapor (g). Here we developed a simple technique to isolate g by directly measuring leaf intercellular CO concentration (C) along with gas exchange during photosynthetic light induction. We derived stomatal conductance to CO (g) from the C independently of g. Plotting g against g during the early induction phase within ~10 min, we found a highly linear relationship with a positive intercept. Assuming negligible cuticular CO transport, complete stomatal closure occurs when g=0. Then, we considered the residual g (i.e., intercept) as g. Indeed, these g estimates succeeded in correcting the calculation. Our technique, owing to its robustness and increased throughput, will allow for more rapid screening of crops, more reliable gas exchange analysis, and more accurate prediction of plant function under natural environmental conditions.

A random variable is a variable whose components are random values. To characterise a random variable, the arithmetic mean is widely used as an estimate of the location parameter, and variation as an estimate of the scale parameter. The disadvantage of the arithmetic mean is that it is sensitive to extreme values, outliers in the data. Due to that, to characterise random variables, robust estimates of the location and scale parameters are widely used: the median and median absolute deviation from the median. In real situations, the components of a random variable cannot always be estimated in a deterministic way. One way to model the initial data uncertainty is to use fuzzy estimates of the components of a random variable. Such variables are called fuzzy random variables. In this paper, we examine fuzzy robust estimates of location and scale parameters of a fuzzy random variable: fuzzy median and fuzzy median of the deviations of fuzzy component values from the fuzzy median.
