As a critical component of the sugarcane harvester, the primary function of the crop dividers is to lift the lodged sugarcane (LS) and reduce the loss rate of the sugarcane harvest. In this study, a rigid-flexible coupling simulation method is proposed to improve the lifting efficiency of the crop dividers on severely LS and analyze the nature of interaction between the sugarcane stalk and the crop dividers. The model’s accuracy was verified using field experiments, and the operational performance of the crop dividers on sugarcane in different lodging postures was investigated. The results showed that the curve of the vertical height of the center (VHC) fluctuated more and slipped with highest frequency during the lifting process of side and forward LS. The speed of VHC was fastest during the lifting operation of side LS. The effect of side angle on the lifting effect of sugarcane was significant; the qualified values of the VHC of sugarcane being lifted in different lodged postures were: side and reverse lodged > side lodged > side and forward lodged. The coupling method and experimental results described in this paper can provide guidance for the optimal design and field operation of the crop dividers.

Abstract Background Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an economically important crop with stalks as the harvest organs. Improvement in stalk quality is deemed a promising strategy for enhancing sugarcane production. However, the lack of efficient approaches for systematic evaluation of sugarcane germplasm largely limits improvements in stalk quality. This study is designed to develop a systematic near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) assay for high-throughput phenotyping of sugarcane stalk quality, thereby providing a feasible solution for precise evaluation of sugarcane germplasm. Results A total of 628 sugarcane accessions harvested at different growth stages before and after maturity were employed to take a high-throughput assay to determine sugarcane stalk quality. Based on high-performance anion chromatography (HPAEC-PAD), large variations in sugarcane stalk quality were detected in terms of biomass composition and the corresponding fundamental ratios. Online and offline NIRS modeling strategies were applied for multiple purpose calibration with partial least square (PLS) regression analysis. Consequently, 25 equations were generated with excellent determination coefficients (R2) and ratio performance deviation (RPD) values. Notably, for some observations, RPD values as high as 6.3 were observed, which indicated their exceptional performance and predictive capability. Conclusions This study provides a feasible method for consistent and high-throughput assessment of stalk quality in terms of moisture, soluble sugar, insoluble residue and the corresponding fundamental ratios. The proposed method permits large-scale screening of optimal sugarcane germplasm for sugarcane stalk quality breeding and beyond.

The extent of economic losses may vary depending on factors such as environmental conditions and sugarcane varieties. Losses to the sugarcane borer often vary across geographic regions (e.g. crop losses to the borer in Louisiana), USA may range from 4-30% annually, possibly twice as high as in Florida (Ingram et al., 1951).

The TDR can be used to measure water content and nutrients in several media with a potential to monitor the xylem sap flow in plants. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between the xylem sap content and water available in the soil for sugarcane cultivation using TDR. The study was conducted in a protected environment with eight boxes (500 L). The boxes were divided into two treatments with different water application rates (1.6 and 3.4 L h-1) through subsurface irrigation. In each box TDR probes were inserted in the medium part of sugarcane stalk, totaling three probes per box to monitoring the sap flow. The soil water content was monitored using 20 net-placed probes. Therefore, the simultaneous monitoring of xylem sap and soil water content occurred for five months. As a result, it was obtained that the xylem content monitoring through TDR is moderately related to soil moisture, with a response to the absorption and translocation of the solution in the stem of sugarcane plants as a consequence of irrigation applications and/or fertirrigation. Thus, it was concluded that there is a weak relations between water contents in the soil and plant, especially for the treatment that used the highest flow rate (3.4 L h-1).
