Abstract Zinc and Copper abundances are rarely available for normal and Chemically Peculiar A stars because the strongest transitions of Zn ii and Cu ii fall in the mid-UV. Estimates of the abundances of zinc and copper are derived for 78 Vir (A2p SrCrEu) and θ Leo (A2 IV) using mean mid-ultraviolet spectra constructed by coadding individual spectra collected with the Long Wave Prime and Long wavelength Redundant cameras over the 18 yr of the IUE mission. The strong transition of Cu ii at 2135.98 Å is present in 78 Vir and θ Leo but definitely stronger in 78 Vir, whereas all Zn ii lines are blended. Spectral synthesis of the least blended lines yields estimates of the abundances of zinc and copper of about 4.92 and 4.95 respectively in θ Leo and 5.82 and 5.19 in 78 Vir (on a scale where log(H) = 12). There is no convincing evidence that these lines varied in the spectra analyzed for both stars.

Comparative studies of radiation balance components at different growth stages on soybean crop and bare soil were made at Central Agrometeorological  Observatory  (CAgMO), Pune.  Continuous measurements of net, reflected and global solar radiations were made over cropped field as well as over bare soil all throughout the growth phases in kharif season of 1995.  Net and reflected radiations and albedo over canopy were higher by 7, 26 and 25 per cent respectively than bare soil.  The net short wave (absorbed) radiation and net long wave (out-going) radiation evaluated over the canopy  were less than those over bare soil by 5 and 20 per cent respectively.                 The mean daily net, reflected, net short wave and net long wave (out-going)  radiation were 9.86, 3.86, 15.35 and 5.49 MJm-2 respectively and the albedo was 20 per cent over soybean canopy whereas for bare soil they were 9.23, 3.07, 16.15 and 6.91 MJm-2  and 16 per cent respectively.  The mean daily global  solar radiation during the crop growing  season was 19.20 MJm-2. The highest albedo (26 per cent) of the crop recorded in the 10th  week after sowing  (WAS) was in correspondence to maximum LAI (5.9) observed at pod formation stage.

Abstract This work pertains to the design, numerical investigation, and experimental demonstration of an optically transparent, lightweight, and conformable metastructure that exhibits multispectral signature management capabilities despite its extremely low-profile configuration. In comparison to the existing hierarchical approaches of designing multispectral stealth solutions, attention has been paid to accommodate the conflicting requirements of radar and infrared stealth using a single metasurface layer configuration, which required a few constraints to be incorporated during the design stage to ensure compatibility. This methodlogy promulgates the desired multispectral response with minimal manufacturing footprint and facilitates an efficient integration with the other existing countermeasure platforms. The resulting design exhibits a polarization-insensitive and incident angle stable broadband microwave absorption with at least 90% absorption ranging from 8.2 to 18.4 GHz. Concomitantly it also exhibits an averaged infrared emissivity of 0.46 in the 8-14µm long-wave infrared regime, along with high optical transparency (71% transmission at 632.8nm). Notably, the total thickness of the metastructure stands at 0.10λ_L (λ_L corresponds to the wavelength at lowest frequency). The metastructure has been fabricated with ITO coated PET sheets, on which the frequency selective pattern is machined using Excimer laser micromachining, and the performances are verified experimentally. Furthermore, a hybrid theoretical model has been developed that not only provides crucial insights into the operation of metastructure but also presents a methodical semi-analytical approach to design.

Abstract Cobalt and nickel abundances are rarely available for normal and Chemically Peculiar A stars because the strongest transitions of Co ii and Ni ii fall in the mid-UV. The abundances of cobalt and nickel are derived for 78 Vir using a mean mid-ultraviolet spectrum constructed by coadding 10 spectra collected with the Long Wave Prime and Long wavelength Redundant cameras over the 18 yr of the IUE mission. The strong transitions of Co ii at 2286.16 Å, 2307.86 Å, 2324.32 Å and 2580.33 Å and that of Ni ii et 2287.09 Å are present and more or less affected by blends. The least blended, λ 2286.16 Å, yields a mean overabundance of cobalt of 5 times the solar abundance, the Ni ii line at 2287.09 Å yields a 3 times solar overabundance. There is no convincing evidence that these lines varied in the spectra analyzed. The rotational period of 78 Vir estimated from its recent TESS lightcurve is 3.723 ± 0.055 days.

Abstract Fission and fusion are important phenomena, which have been observed experimentally in many physical areas. In this paper, we study the above two phenomena in the (2+1)-dimensional generalized Calogero-Bogoyavlenskii-Schiff equation. By introducing some new constraint conditions to its N-solitons, the fifission and fusion are obtained. Numerical figures show that the two types of solutions look like the capital letter Y in spacial structures. Then, by taking a long wave limit approach and complex conjugation restrictions, some hybrid resonance solutions are generated, such as the interaction solutions between the L-order lumps and Q-fifission (fusion) solitons, as well as hybrid solutions mixed by the T-order breathers and Q-fifission (fusion) solitons. Dynamical behaviors of these solutions are analyzed theoretically and numerically. The results obtained can be helpful for understanding the fusion and fifission phenomena in many physical models, such as the organic membrane, macromolecule material and even-clump DNA, plasmas physics and so on.

AbstractWe have proposed an “exact” strain gradient (SG) continuum model to properly predict the dispersive characteristics of diatomic lattice metamaterials with local and nonlocal interactions. The key enhancement is proposing a wavelength-dependent Taylor expansion to obtain a satisfactory accuracy when the wavelength gets close to the lattice spacing. Such a wavelength-dependent Taylor expansion is applied to the displacement field of the diatomic lattice, resulting in a novel SG model. For various kinds of diatomic lattices, the dispersion diagrams given by the proposed SG model always agree well with those given by the discrete model throughout the first Brillouin zone, manifesting the robustness of the present model. Based on this SG model, we have conducted the following discussions. (I) Both mass and stiffness ratios affect the band gap structures of diatomic lattice metamaterials, which is very helpful for the design of metamaterials. (II) The increase in the SG order can enhance the model performance if the modified Taylor expansion is adopted. Without doing so, the higher-order continuum model can suffer from a stronger instability issue and does not necessarily have a better accuracy. The proposed SG continuum model with the eighth-order truncation is found to be enough to capture the dispersion behaviors all over the first Brillouin zone. (III) The effects of the nonlocal interactions are analyzed. The nonlocal interactions reduce the workable range of the well-known long-wave approximation, causing more local extrema in the dispersive diagrams. The present model can serve as a satisfactory continuum theory when the wavelength gets close to the lattice spacing, i.e., when the long-wave approximation is no longer valid. For the convenience of band gap designs, we have also provided the design space from which one can easily obtain the proper mass and stiffness ratios corresponding to a requested band gap width.
