Phosphorus (P) is essential for agriculture; however, local P surpluses can have adverse environmental effects, such as eutrophication. Optimal P fertiliser use, therefore, means balancing these effects. Although P fluxes from soil to plants are key research areas, little is known about on-farm use of P fertilisers. As, typically, not all fields or crops are treated with P annually, the transferability of measurements for other nutrients, such as nitrogen, appears limited. This study aims to close this knowledge gap. On-farm P use was described using the farm records of 50 farms in five regions of northern Germany for the period of 2010 to 2018. All sources for P fertilisation were taken into account as either P mineral, P organic or P total. Two indicators for on-farm P use were suggested: frequency, which gives the percentage of the treated area, and amount, which gives the quantity used per ha of the treated area. The frequency for P total ranged from 55.9% to 93.1% of the total farm area being fertilised. Amounts between 24.8 and 41.6 kg ha−1 P total were applied on the treated area of the farm. The results supported the separation of the quantity and frequency in on-farm P use. No decrease in P use was found during the period investigated. Using mixed models, the results further show that explanatory variables, including the farm characteristics and crop choice, explain the substantial variations in P use. It is recommended for the example of Germany to establish an official digital database for P fertilisers that can be updated professionally and is mandatory for all documentation on P use.

The ability to utilise foliar-applied phosphorus (P) as a strategy to increase the P status and yield of grain crops grown in dryland regions with variable climates is attractive. Several P formulations with varying pH, accompanying cations and adjuvants were tested for their effectiveness as foliar fertilisers for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants, first under controlled and then under field conditions. Experiments under controlled conditions suggested that several formulations with specific chemistries offered promise with respect to wheat fertiliser-P recovery and biomass responses. These formulations were then evaluated in two field experiments, and although wheat grown at the sites showed substantive responses to soil-applied P, there was no significant grain-yield response to foliar-applied P. Following the limited responses to foliar-applied fertiliser in the field, we used an isotopic dilution technique to test the hypothesis that the variation in responses of wheat to foliar addition of P could be explained by a mechanism of substitution, whereby root P uptake is downregulated when P is taken up through the leaves, but this was proven not to be the case. We conclude that foliar P application cannot be used as a tactical fertiliser application to boost grain yield of wheat in dryland regions.

ABSTRACT Sweet potato is one of the most important foods in the world. Among the different cultivated genotypes, it is worth highlighting those with orange pulp due to their ability to supply adequate amounts of provitamin A carotenoids to humans. This study evaluates the effect of potassium and phosphorus fertiliser application on carotenoid yield in sweet potatoes. Two experiments were carried out in São Luis City, Maranhão State, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomised block design, with six treatments for each of the studies (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg ha-1 K2O and 0, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 kg ha-1 P2O5), with four replicates. Cultivar 'Beauregard' was used, which has high levels of carotenoids. Roots were harvested at 123 days after planting for both experiments. The following variables were evaluated: root fresh and dry weight, dry weight content, in addition to the yield and contents of total carotenoids, α-carotene, β-carotene, 13-cis β-carotene and 9-cis β-carotene. With the average data of the evaluated characteristics, we performed analysis of variance and polynomial regression analysis. Potassium rates influenced carotenoid yield in sweet potato roots, with the rates of 73 to 77 kg ha-1 K2O being recommended to maximise the production of total carotenoids, β-carotene, and α-carotene. Phosphorus, in turn, influenced only total carotenoids, and is recommended at the rate of 174.09 kg ha-1 P2O5 to maximise the production of these nutrients.
