The characteristic stages of metamorphic transformations of mines are established according to the increase in the elemental content of carbon and changes in other components of organic matter. Stages of metamorphism transformations with an average carbon content of more than 93.6% can significantly differ in properties due to the unpredictability of the ratio between the components of organic matter. At these stages, even a minimal difference between the components can be the reason for the emergence of new properties of the coal seams. As the influence of the processes of metamorphism increases, the boundaries of the stages, determined by the percentage of carbon, narrow. The established stages of the transformation of reservoirs in terms of the individual proportion of the components in carbonization practically do not differ from the boundaries of the stages determined by the elemental composition of organic matter. It is noted that the average carbon content at the stages of seam metamorphism, determined by the yield of coke, in most cases does not coincide with the ranges of changes in the average carbon content, established by the individual content of the components or their share in carbonization. The inconsistency of the boundaries in the stages of seam metamorphism makes it unacceptable to use the coke yield as the main criterion for assessing the conversion of coal and even more so the manifestation of hazardous properties of coal seams.

The study of the petrographic structure of medium- and high-rank coals is important from both a cognitive and a utilitarian point of view. The petrographic constituents and their individual characteristics and features are responsible for the properties of coal and the way it behaves in various technological processes. This paper considers the application of convolutional neural networks for coal petrographic images segmentation. The U-Net-based model for segmentation was proposed. The network was trained to segment inertinite, liptinite, and vitrinite. The segmentations prepared manually by a domain expert were used as the ground truth. The results show that inertinite and vitrinite can be successfully segmented with minimal difference from the ground truth. The liptinite turned out to be much more difficult to segment. After usage of transfer learning, moderate results were obtained. Nevertheless, the application of the U-Net-based network for petrographic image segmentation was successful. The results are good enough to consider the method as a supporting tool for domain experts in everyday work.

Vehicle lateral stability is evaluated using the static overturning angle. The correct value of this parameter depends on the calculation method. The aim of this study was to compare the latest standard with previously published methodology, to propose two alternative methodologies (Models 1 and 2) and to analyze the influence of various levels of rear wheel ballast weights and overall tire widths on the stability of universal and subcompact tractors. The results showed a significant regression effect of the rear wheel ballast weight on static overturning angle. The influence of the rear wheel ballast weight was higher in the subcompact tractor than in the universal tractor due to a larger distance between the height of the center of gravity and the center of the rear axle. Comparing the latest standard with the previously published methodology, the highest difference values were 13.82% and 7.30%. Both models are based on the previously published methodology and differ from each other in rolling and slope lines. The methodology proposed in Model 2 differed from the standard similarly to the previously published methodology; therefore, it is irrelevant. Model 1 reached differences of only −1.81% and −1.63%, representing a minimal difference from the standard.

There are two fairly common complications during pregnancy, i.e., gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-eclampsia, which are independent, but are also closely linked in prevalence in pregnant women, with potential serious adverse consequences. IL-37 and IL-38, which belong to the IL-1 superfamily, participate in anti-inflammatory responses. Dysregulation of IL-37 and IL-38 has been observed in many auto-immune diseases. IL-37 is substantially reduced in the umbilical cords and placentas of GDM subjects, but IL-37 is significantly induced in the placentas of pre-eclampsia patients, suggesting there are differential regulatory roles of IL-37 in obstetrics, despite IL-37 being an anti-inflammatory mediator. Furthermore, IL-38 is substantially increased in the umbilical cords and placentas of GDM subjects, but minimal difference is observed in the placentas from pre-eclampsia patients. These data imply that IL-38 is also regulated independently within the diseased placentas. This review provides some insight for both basic scientists and medical practitioners to manage these patients effectively.

Abstract Objective Early initiation of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is advocated for youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Data to guide CGM use on time-in-range (TIR), hypoglycemia, and the role of partial clinical remission (PCR) are limited. Our aims were to assess whether: 1) an association between increased TIR and hypoglycemia exists, and 2) how time in hypoglycemia varies by PCR status. Methods We analyzed 80 youth who were started on CGM shortly after T1D diagnosis and were followed for up to 1-year post-diagnosis. TIR and hypoglycemia rates were determined by CGM data and retrospectively analyzed. PCR was defined as (visit-HbA1c)+(4*units/kg/day) <9. Results Youth were started on CGM 8.0 (IQR 6.0-13.0) days post-diagnosis. Time spent <70mg/dL remained low despite changes in TIR (highest TIR 74.6±16.7%, 2.4±2.4% hypoglycemia at 1 month post-diagnosis; lowest TIR 61.3±20.3%, 2.1±2.7% hypoglycemia at 12 months post-diagnosis). No events of severe hypoglycemia occurred. Hypoglycemia was rare and there was minimal difference for PCR versus non-PCR youth (54-70mg/dL: 1.8% vs 1.2%, p=0.04; <54mg/dL: 0.3% vs 0.3%, p=0.55). Approximately 50% of the time spent in hypoglycemia was in the 65-70mg/dL range. Conclusions As TIR gradually decreased over 12 months post-diagnosis, hypoglycemia was limited with no episodes of severe hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia rates did not vary in a clinically meaningful manner by PCR status. With CGM being started earlier, consideration needs to be given to modifying CGM hypoglycemia education, including alarm settings. These data support a trial in the year post-diagnosis to determine alarm thresholds for youth who wear CGM.

Abstract Background The extent of SARS-CoV-2 exposure and transmission in Mali and the surrounding region is not well understood. We aimed to estimate the cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in three communities, and understand factors associated with infection. Methods Between July 2020 and January 2021, we collected blood samples and demographic, social, medical, and self-reported symptoms information from residents aged 6 months and older over two study visits. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were measured using a highly specific two-antigen ELISA optimized for use in Mali. We calculated cumulative adjusted seroprevalence for each community and evaluated factors associated with serostatus at each visit by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results Overall, 94.8% (2533/2672) of participants completed both study visits. A total of 31.3% (837/2672) were aged <10 years, 27.6% (737/2672) were aged 10-17 years, and 41.1% (1098/2572) were aged ≥18 years. The cumulative SARS-CoV-2 exposure rate was 58.5% (95% CI: 47.5 to 69.4). This varied between sites and was 73.4% in the urban community of Sotuba, 53.2% in the rural town of Bancoumana, and 37.1% in the rural village of Donéguébougou. Study site and increased age were associated with serostatus at both study visits. There was minimal difference in reported symptoms based on serostatus. Conclusion The true extent of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in Mali is greater than previously reported and may now approach hypothetical ‘herd immunity’ in urban areas. The epidemiology of the pandemic in the region may be primarily subclinical and within background illness rates.

Based on literature review, the present study aimed to evaluate data on cases of co-infections between tuberculosis and HIV in the period from 2015 to 2018 in the state of Ceará. Between 2015-1018, there were a total of 16,776 new TB cases in the state of Ceará (Figure 1). When we analyzed the first two years (2015 and 2016), there was a minimal difference, at 1%, this figure increased in the following year (2017), from 24.02% to 25.75%, leveraging in 2018, representing a total of 26.28% of the total cases of the last 4 years, that is, there was no change above 2% over the years. However, the number of cases increases gradually. Recognizing the epidemiological status of different regions and locations allows the state to recognize and interpret more efficiently the ways of combating the diseases that so devastate humanity and take the sleep of so many scientists and government leaders. Furthermore, the correct assessment of these data allows us to understand the growth of the disease in the region, and thus help in the process of controlling and informing the population.

Water-in-oil droplets have huge importance in chemical and biotechnology applications, despite their difficulty being produced in microfluidics. Moreover, existing studies focus more on the different shape of microchannels instead of their size, which is one of the critical factors that can influence flow characteristics of the droplets. Therefore, the present work aims to study the behaviours of water-in-oil droplets at the interfacial surface in an offset T-junction microchannel, having different radiuses, using micro-PIV software. Food-grade palm olein and distilled water seeded with polystyrene microspheres particles were used as working fluids, and their captured images showing their generated droplets’ behaviours focused on the junction of the respective microfluidic channel, i.e., radiuses of 400 µm, 500 µm, 750 µm and 1000 µm, were analysed via PIVlab. The increasing in the radius of the offset T-junction microchannel leads to the increase in the cross-sectional area and the decrease in the distilled water phase’s velocity. The experimental velocity of the water droplet is in agreement with theoretical values, having a minimal difference as low as 0.004 mm/s for the case of the microchannel with a radius of 750 µm. In summary, a small increase in the channel’s size yields a significant increase in the overall flow of a liquid.

Based on expansions with only two coefficients and known critical points, we consider a minimal model of critical phenomena. The method of analysis is both based on and inspired with the symmetry properties of functional self-similarity relation between the consecutive functional approximations. Factor approximants are applied together with various natural optimization conditions of non-perturbative nature. The role of control parameter is played by the critical index by itself. The minimal derivative condition imposed on critical amplitude appears to bring the most reasonable, uniquely defined results. The minimal difference condition also imposed on amplitudes produces upper and lower bound on the critical index. While one of the bounds is close to the result from the minimal difference condition, the second bound is determined by the non-optimized factor approximant. One would expect that for the minimal derivative condition to work well, the bounds determined by the minimal difference condition should be not too wide. In this sense the technique of optimization presented above is self-consistent, since it automatically supplies the solution and the bounds. In the case of effective viscosity of passive suspensions the bounds could be found that are too wide to make any sense from either of the solutions. Other optimization conditions imposed on the factor approximants, lead to better estimates for the critical index for the effective viscosity. The optimization is based on equating two explicit expressions following from two different definitions of the critical index, while optimization parameter is introduced as the trial third-order coefficient in the expansion.

Abstract Introduction Epistaxis is a common acute presentation in childhood that with recurrence often causes great distress for both parent and child alike. For recurrent epistaxis it is common practice in the UK to trial either a topical antiseptic (Naseptin) or silver nitrate cautery. A literature review was conducted to assess which treatment confers greater protection against rebleeding events. Method The literature review was performed via a search on Medline via Ovid. As both cautery and topical antiseptics are not new treatments, an age limit was not set to allow older research to be included and provide perspective. Results In all but one study included, there was no statistically significant difference between the use of Naseptin versus cautery in the reduction of rebleeding events. A higher incidence of complications such as septal perforation and pain were reported in patients who underwent cautery, whilst no adverse side effects were reported with Naseptin. Conclusions The current evidence base relies mostly on short term outcomes, with most patients not being followed up for more than 2 months. If further longitudinal studies provide evidence to support there being a minimal difference in treatment outcomes, using topical antiseptics before considering cautery would be better clinical practice in paediatric patients.
