Propagation of the earthquake motion towards the ground surface alters both the acceleration and frequency content of the motion. Acceleration time record and Fourier amplitude spectrum of the motion reveal changes in the acceleration and frequency content. However, Fourier amplitude spectrum fails to give frequency-time variation. Wavelet transform overcomes this difficulty. In the present study, site response analysis of a liquefiable soil domain has been investigated employing wavelet transform. Three earthquake motions with distinct predominant frequencies are considered. It is revealed that the moment soil undergoes initial liquefaction, it causes a spike in the acceleration time history. Frequency of the spikes is found to be greater than the predominant frequency of the acceleration-time history recorded at the ground surface from the analysis. Interestingly, the spikes belong to the sharp tips of the shear stress-shear strain curve. Immediately after the spike, acceleration deamplification is observed. Post-liquefaction deamplification (filtering) of the frequency components is also observed.

A parametric study that examines the ground surface settlement due to the excavation of shallow offset arrangement twin tunnels is presented. Offset arrangement tunnels are those that run parallel to each other, but at different elevations. The study focuses on the influence of both the construction sequence and various geometric parameters on the induced soil settlement. A series of three-dimensional finite element analyses was carried out to investigate the settlement behavior and interactions between offset arrangement twin tunnels excavated in clay using a simplified mechanized excavation method. Analyses were carried out for three cover-to-diameter (C/D) ratios, three possible construction sequences, five angular relative positions, and five angular spacings. In addition, settlement data were also investigated by varying horizontal and vertical spacings while keeping the angular spacing constant. The total settlement of the excavated twin tunnels and the settlement induced solely by the new second tunnel are both presented, and special attention was paid to identifying the dominant geometric parameters. The observed data trends from this study are generally consistent with the limited data available in the literature. This study confirmed a few perceived behaviors. First, angular relative position better describes the settlement behavior in comparison to angular spacing. Second, the effect of the vertical distance is noticeably more significant than that of the horizontal distance between the two tunnels. Third, excavation of the lower tunnel at first induces higher total ground settlement than when the upper tunnel is excavated first or when both tunnels are excavated concurrently. Fourth, settlement due to the construction of the newer tunnel decreases with the increase in the cover depth. In addition, two design charts have been proposed to calculate the settlement induced from a new second tunnel excavation and the eccentricity of the maximum total settlement relative to the center of the new tunnel.

AbstractThe deformation and movement characteristics of high-level key stratums in overlying strata are important for estimating ground subsidence and understanding failure characteristics of ultrathick strata during mining. In this study, a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) and multipoint borehole extensometers (MPBXs) were collaboratively employed to monitor the deformation of high-level key stratums in situ during the mining process at working face 130,604 of the Maiduoshan Coal Mine. DOFS monitoring results showed that the distance from advance influence of mining on the ground surface is 219.2 m. The deformation of the shallow stratums were greater and was affected earlier than that of the deep stratums. The deformation in the strata did not occur continuously and the boundary curve of the impact from advance mining was not a straight line with the advancement of the working face. By the MPBX technology, we measured the strata movement and obtained four-stage characteristics of high-level key stratum movement. The subsidence of the primary key stratum and the sub key stratum were monitored to reach 1389 and 1437 mm; their final relative displacement differed by 48 mm. No bed separation was observed in between the strata, and the key stratums tended to sink as a whole with the advancement of the working face. This research guides the analysis the movement of thick high-level key stratums.

Background: well water provide water that comes from a layer of soil that is relatively close to the ground surface, therefore it is easily exposed to contamination through seepage. In general, seepage comes from human excreta, latrines or latrines and animals, as well as from well waste itself, either because the floor or the sewerage are not impermeable to water. The condition of construction and the way the well water is drawn can also be a source of contamination, for example wells with open construction and drawing water with a bucket. One of the fecal contamination bacteria found in well water is Escherichia coli. Alum (Aluminum sulfate) is one of anti-microbial.Objective: To determine the effect of alum with concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% on the amount of Escherichia coli in well waterMethod: explanatory research (explanatory research) which is to explain the relationship between variables through comparison and hypothesis testing, using a quasi experimental design method with the experimental design used in this study is Completely Randomized Design with 3 repetitions. Results: The results of the ANOVA test on the content of E. coli with various concentrations obtained a P value of 0.000 an alpha value of 0.05, indicating that there was a significant difference in the observed concentrations. Conclusion: Alum with concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% affected the number of Escherichia coli in well water. The higher the concentration of alum, the better in inhibiting the growth of E.coli bacteria in well water. Conclusion: Alum with concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% affected the number of Escherichia coli in well water. The higher the concentration of alum, the better in inhibiting the growth of E.coli bacteria in well water.

Abstract Introduction and purpose The recent cholera spread, new cases, and fatality continue to arouse concern in public health systems; however, interventions on control is at its peak yet statistics show continuous report. This study characterized atypical and patho-significant environmental Vibrio cholerae retrieved from ground/surface/domestic water in rural-urban-sub-urban locations of Amathole District municipality and Chris Hani District municipality, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Methods Domestic/surface water was sampled and 759 presumptive V. cholerae isolates were retrieved using standard microbiological methods. Virulence phenotypic test: toxin co-regulated pili (tcp), choleragen red, protease production, lecithinase production, and lipase test were conducted. Serotyping using polyvalent antisera (Bengal and Ogawa/Inaba/Hikojima) and molecular typing: 16SrRNA, OmpW, serogroup (Vc-O1/O139), biotype (tcpAClas/El Tor, HlyAClas/El Tor, rstRClas/El Tor, RS1, rtxA, rtxC), and virulence (ctxA, ctxB, zot, ace, cep, prt, toxR, hlyA) genes were targeted. Result Result of 16SrRNA typing confirmed 508 (66.9%) while OmpW detected/confirmed 61 (12.01%) V. cholerae strains. Phenotypic-biotyping scheme showed positive test to polymyxin B (68.9%), Voges proskauer (6.6%), and Bengal serology (11.5%). Whereas Vc-O1/O139 was negative, yet two of the isolates harbored the cholera toxin with a gene-type ctxB and hlyAClas: 2/61, revealing atypical/unusual/dual biotype phenotypic/genotypic features. Other potential atypical genotypes detected include rstR: 7/61, Cep: 15/61, ace: 20/61, hlyAElTor: 53/61, rtxA: 30/61, rtxC: 11/61, and prtV: 15/61 respectively. Conclusion Although additional patho-significant/virulent genotypes associated with epidemic/sporadic cholera cases were detected, an advanced, bioinformatics, and post-molecular evaluation is necessary. Such stride possesses potential to adequately minimize future cholera cases associated with dynamic/atypical environmental V. cholerae strains.

To solve the ground subsidence problem associated with thick coal seam mining under the railway in the Tangshan Mine, the technology of overburden strata separation-zone grouting (OSSG) was proposed. Based on the analysis of the full height overlying strata structure in the range of the six working face areas of the second mining district, the spatial distribution characteristics of the separation zone within the overlying strata are obtained after fully mining the six working faces. Then, emphasis was placed on the selection ratio of grouting materials and the hydrodynamic properties of different grout types, and grouting grout with a high concentration, slow precipitation rate, and good stability was obtained by taking fly ash and local clay as aggregates. The designed grout concentration was approximately 40%; the bulk density was approximately 1.20; and the clay content in the aggregates was approximately 40–50%. The separation-zone grouting plan was designed for the six working faces, and continuous grouting technology with the characteristics of multiple separation zones within the full-height section with a large flow and a high concentration was proposed to form a complete grouting system and reasonable grouting process. After engineering verification, the technology has an ash injection ratio of 24.2%, a grouting ratio of 100.3%, and a reduction in the ground subsidence ratio of 51.5%, effectively reducing mining damage to the ground surface and ensuring the safe operation of ground surface railways. Simultaneously, this advancement improves the resource recovery rate of coal mines and provides greater benefits for mining enterprises.

Abstract A triple-frequency operated concentric annular ring microstrip antenna which is single fed is presented. The proposed antenna with three concentric annular rings and two symmetrical notches on its outer ring and having a cross slot in its ground surface shows triple band at resonance frequency 1.22760, 1.57542, and 2.18 GHz, respectively. At the first two bands (GPS L2 and GPS L1), circular polarization characteristic is observed and the third band observes linear polarization finding its application in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). The complete dimension of the antenna designed and fabricated is only 51.6 × 51.6 × 1.6 mm3. Experimental results depict the proposed antenna gain of 3.31, 3.55, and 3.50 dBi in three bands, respectively, and closely matches with the theoretical results.

In the grinding process, the grinding wheel surface condition changes depending on the dressing conditions, which affects the ground surface roughness and grinding resistance. Several studies have been reported on the practical application of dressing using prismatic dressers in recent years. However, only a few studies that quantitatively evaluate the effects of differences in dressing conditions using prismatic dresser on the ground surface roughness and grinding resistance have been reported. Thus, this study aims to evaluate quantitatively the effect of the difference in dressing conditions using the prismatic dresser on the ground surface roughness and grinding resistance by focusing on the dressing resistance. In the experiment, dressing is performed by changing the dressing lead and the depth of dressing cut with a prismatic dresser, and the ground surface roughness and grinding resistance are measured. Consequently, by increasing the dressing lead and the depth of dressing cut, the ground surface roughness increased, and the grinding resistance decreased. This phenomenon was caused by the increase in dressing resistance when the dressing lead and the depth of dressing cut were increased, which caused a change in the grinding wheel surface condition. Furthermore, the influence of the difference in dressing conditions using the prismatic dresser on the ground surface roughness and grinding resistance can be quantitatively evaluated by using the dressing resistance.
