Abstract Seismic method is a major approach for detecting the seismic geological features ahead of the tunnel, understanding the distribution of unfavorable geology, and ensuring the safety of tunnel construction. Observation system is the key for seismic detection, many studies have been conducted to optimize the observation system; however, most of them focused on the surface seismic investigation and numerical simulation rather than in tunnel field environment (limited aperture and full space environment). How to obtain better wavefield information with limited observation aperture is a great challenge. In this study numerical simulation and instrumental techniques (GPR, DC, etc.) were implemented to further check the result of seismic detection at the 1# tailrace tunnel at the Wudongde hydropower station. In the field case, observation detectors were arranged spatially in the tunnel and source points were placed in four ways: linearly along a single side, on the tunnel face, in front of the detectors, and behind the detectors. Then, after data acquisition, the data processing is conducted to carry out the migration results. The imaging results indicate that the observation system with sources and detectors in liner arrangement (with equal interval) helps to suppress artifacts, further supporting the advantages of spatial observation system with liner observation line (detectors). Moreover, the study provides suggestions for geological prospecting in similar tunnel projects.

Mechanical ventilation consumes a huge amount of global energy. Natural ventilation is a crucial solution for reducing energy consumption and enhancing the capacity of atmospheric self-purification. This paper evaluates the impacts of indoor-outdoor temperature differences on building ventilation and indoor-outdoor air pollutant dispersion in urban areas. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is employed to simulate the flow fields in the street canyon and indoor environment. Ventilation conditions of single-side ventilation mode and cross-ventilation mode are investigated. Air change rate, normalized concentration of traffic-related air pollutant (CO), intake fraction and exposure concentration are calculated to for ventilation efficiency investigation and exposure assessment. The results show that cross ventilation increases the air change rate for residential buildings under isothermal conditions. With the indoor-outdoor temperature difference, heating could increase the air change rate of the single-side ventilation mode but restrain the capability of the cross-ventilation mode in part of the floors. Heavier polluted areas appear in the upstream areas of single-side ventilation modes, and the pollutant can diffuse to middle-upper floors in cross-ventilation modes. Cross ventilation mitigates the environmental health stress for the indoor environment when indoor-outdoor temperature difference exits and the personal intake fraction is decreased by about 66% compared to the single-side ventilation. Moreover, the existence of indoor-outdoor temperature differences can clearly decrease the risk of indoor personal exposure under both two natural ventilation modes. The study numerically investigates the building ventilation and pollutant dispersion in the urban community with natural ventilation. The method and the results are helpful references for optimizing the building ventilation plan and improving indoor air quality.

Abstract We present a self-error-rejecting multipartite entanglement purification protocol (MEPP) for N-electron-spin entangled states, resorting to the single-side cavity-spin-coupling system. Our MEPP has a high efficiency containing two steps. One is to obtain high-fidelity N-electron-spin entangled systems with error-heralded parity-check devices (PCDs) in the same parity-mode outcome of three electron-spin pairs, as well as M-electron-spin entangled subsystems (2 ≤ M < N) in the different parity-mode outcomes of those. The other is to regain the N-electron-spin entangled systems from M-electron-spin entangled states utilizing entanglement link. Moreover, the quantum circuits of PCDs make our MEPP works faithfully, due to the practical photon-scattering deviations from the finite side leakage of the microcavity, and the limited coupling between a quantum dot and a cavity mode, converted into a failed detection in a heralded way.

Aiming at the problems of high labor intensity and low work efficiency in manual handling of cloth rolls in domestic weaving workshops, this paper designs an automatic cloth drop car device. The device mainly includes a transmission device and a cloth dropping structure. The transmission device includes shafts and other related parts. The cloth dropping mechanism is composed of a frame, rollers and connecting rods. The cooperation between the mechanisms is used to complete a series of movements such as cloth dropping and transfer. And the finite element analysis of the cloth roller hook shows that the cloth drop mechanism is safe and reliable.

This empirical paper sought to determine the lack of public participation and good governance, and to understand who is turning the blind eye on the issue. Local government municipalities have the obligation to exercise good governance, this is to ensure that there is quality service delivery and engagements between the municipalities becomes greater. Therefore, the municipalities are therefore responsible to establish the criterion for participation, transparency, adherence to the rule of law, effectiveness, equity, responsibility, accountability, and consistency. However, in the local government all these important aspects of good governance are neglected and avoided. The question of who is fooling who? Is basically an intention to point out that the idea of good governance does not have a single side but the public, the organisations and the state are included? For the good governance and the democracy of participation there must be an increase in the quality of feedback and the processes of policy formulation, and most importantly with the prevalence of participation. In the south African local government, municipalities have diluted the importance of public participation and that has caused the growing corruption scandals, protests, low service delivery and failing governments.

Oxalobacter formigenes is an oxalate-degrading bacterium in the gut microbiota that absorbs food-derived oxalate to use this as a carbon and energy source and thereby helps reduce the risk of kidney stone formation of the host animals. The bacterial oxalate transporter OxlT uptakes oxalate from the gut to bacterial cells and excrete formate as a degradation product, with a strict discrimination from other carboxylates that serve as nutrients. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we present crystal structures of oxalate-bound and ligand-free OxlT in two different conformations, occluded and outward-facing states. The oxalate binding site contains two basic residues that form salt bridges with a dicarboxylate substrate while preventing the conformational switch to the occluded state without an acidic substrate, a disallowed state for an antiporter. The occluded ligand-binding pocket can accommodate oxalate but not larger dicarboxylates, such as metabolic intermediates. The permeation pathways from the binding pocket are completely blocked by extensive interdomain hydrophobic and ionic interactions. Nevertheless, a molecular dynamics simulation showed that a flip of a single side chain neighbouring the substrate is sufficient to trigger the gate opening. The OxlT structure indicates the underlying metabolic interactions enabling favourable symbiosis at a molecular level.
