Littoral macroinvertebrates in acidified waterbodies are affected by the interaction of acidification and local environmental conditions. Understanding the interplay of these factors in the structuring of communities is essential for interpreting responses to and/or recovery from acidification. Here, we analyse the species composition and richness of littoral macroinvertebrates in a range of acidified montane standing waters in relation to water chemistry, littoral characteristics and fish stock. The main species composition gradients were related to pH and conductivity; however, considerable variation along these gradients was associated with local habitat characteristics (changing water levels and littoral structure) and concentration of ionic aluminium and dissolved organic carbon. Although fish stock effects were confounded by correlated acidity, we observed a significant decline in abundance of macroinvertebrates vulnerable to fish predation at sites with fish stock. Overall, littoral macroinvertebrates of acidic waterbodies were diverse due to the heterogeneity of local habitat properties, despite they were dominated by acid-tolerant species. Acidic humic sites with dense, heterogeneous littoral vegetation were species-rich, hosting numerous habitat specialists and rare species, while chronically acidified lakes with high aluminium concentrations and sparse littoral vegetation had species-poor assemblages, characteristic of strong acid-stress. Water level manipulation resulted in serious assemblage impoverishment, overriding the effects of more favourable water chemistry. This study shows that the littoral fauna of acidic waterbodies is structured by complex effects induced by local factors in addition to acidity, resulting in acid-stressed assemblages with relatively high variability, emphasising a need to analyse local habitat factors when evaluating the impact of acidification on macroinvertebrates.

Mollusc assemblages of the Orava reservoir, the biggest dam reservoir in Slovakia, were studied in 2020. The reservoir, built in 1941–1953, is situated in north-western Slovakia. Sixteen aquatic mollusc species (13 gastropods, 3 bivalves) were recorded. Valvata piscinalis (O. F. Müller), Radix auricularia (Linnaeus) and Gyraulus parvus (Say) were the most frequent; they were recorded in more than ten sites each. Rich mollusc assemblages, composed mainly of gastropods, were found in sites with rich littoral vegetation of macrophytes. The bivalve diversity and abundance were very small, especially compared to the other studied dam reservoirs. The current results were compared with the previous surveys. The occurrence of Radix lagotis (Schrank) is its first reliable record in Slovakia. Viviparus acerosus (Bourguignat), Aplexa hypnorum (Linnaeus), Anodonta cygnea (Linnaeus), non-native Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Gray) and Physa acuta (Draparnaud) were recorded in this area for the first time and their sites are outside their known range in Slovakia.

The intensively farmed fishponds of the Třeboň Basin in South Bohemia, Czech Republic host a substantial number Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) pairs that nest later than the expected spring season and instead in summer, which may be associated with fishpond farming. A two-factor nested ANOVA of Great Crested Grebe egg and clutch characteristics showed no differences between spring (May-June) and summer (July - August) seasonal clutches. High egg total volume in spring nests was significantly related to both decreasing distance between nests and decreasing number of nests on the fishpond. The increase of total egg volume in summer nests was significantly related to the distance to the edge of littoral vegetation. There is no substantial difference between spring and summer egg characteristics, but total egg volume in spring nests is dependent on other characteristics that those in summer nests.

Pioneer psammophytic vegetation is usually developed on wind-drift sandy substrates such as arenas, spits, beaches, river terraces, and this vegetation occupies significant areas in all three natural zones of Ukraine. The Koelerio-Corynephoretea canescentis class was represented by 13 associations, 3 alliances and 1 order; Festucetea vaginatae class by 22 associations, 2 alliances and 1 order; Helichryso-Crucianelletea maritimae by 10 associations, 4 alliances and 1 order. The results of cluster analysis and synoptic tables of the classes are presented. 9 alliances are briefly described. Leading factors of territorial and ecological differentiation are identified. It was found that the territorial distribution of plant communities is influenced by the character of ecotope mesorelief, soil composition and humus horizon thickness, as well as the degree of eolian processes development. The main factors of their ecological differentiation are soil acidity, salt regime and ombroregime. Based on the results of DCA-ordination of syntaxa within certain vegetation classes, it was found that their distribution is influenced by factors that correlate with the environment-specific conditions. It has emerged that an ecological differentiation of syntaxa within Festucetea vaginatae is determined by the integrated effect of gradients, and soil salinity is leading among them. Temperature regime and climate continentality are leading factors in the distribution of syntaxa within the Koelerio-Corynephoretea canescentis class. The gradients of ombroregime and soil humidity have a significant impact. The distribution of communities of the Helichryso-Crucianelletea maritimae class in the ecological space is determined mainly by factors of variability of damping, ombroregime and climate continentality. The author’s syntaxonomic concept assumes the independence of the studied classes: Koelerio-Corynephoretea canescentis, Helichryso-Crucianelletea maritimae and Festucetea vaginatae, conside­ring that the leading factors of community differentiation of the Festucetea vaginatae and Koelerio-Corynephoretea canescentis classes are the origin (genesis) of sandy substrates, as well as soil acidity. Phytosociological analysis of a large number of relevés of coastal littoral vegetation also provides support for independence of the Helichryso-Crucianelletea maritimae and Ammophiletea classes diffe­rent floristically and ecologically. A review of the psammophytic vegetation of Ukraine will determine the place of the selected syntaxonomic units in the pan-European system.

The objective of this study was to perform a comprehensive botanical analysis of shore and littoral vegetation of a model mesotrophic lake and investigate their effectiveness as a phytogeochemical barrier against biogens of various origin. A lake catchment was characterised by natural (forests) as well as anthropogenic land use (extensive agriculture and stationary and unorganised recreation), generating a determined variability in the load of biogenic substances to lake waters. High potential effectiveness of the phytogeochemical barriers of the analysed phytocoenoses in the assimilation of biogenic substances was found to be particularly related to: species richness, diversity of life forms, presence of specific groups and species of plants and width of the buffer zone. This situation results from the natural properties of the habitat and the modifying effect of anthropogenic transformations in the catchment, affecting the biocoenotic composition of the shore and littoral vegetation of the lake, and therefore shaping the structure of its buffer zones. The morphometric parameters and hydrological conditions of the catchment, combined with variable human pressure and modified by the effectiveness of ecotone biogeochemical barriers, contribute to the mesotrophic limnological status of the lake.
