This paper details a novel, patent pending, abrasive machining manufacturing process for the formation of sub-millimetre holes in THGEMs, with the intended application in gaseous and dual-phase TPCs. Abrasive machining favours a non-ductile substrate such as glasses or ceramics. This innovative manufacturing process allows for unprecedented versatility in THGEM substrates, electrodes, and hole geometry and pattern. Consequently, THGEMs produced via abrasive machining can be tailored for specific properties: for example, high stiffness, low total thickness variation, radiopurity, moisture absorption/outgassing and/or carbonisation resistance. This paper specifically focuses on three glass substrate THGEMs (G-THGEMs) made from Schott Borofloat 33 and fused silica. Circular and hexagonal hole shapes are also investigated. The G-THGEM electrodes are made from indium tin oxide (ITO), with a resistivity of 150 Ω/Sq. All G-THGEMs were characterised in an optical (EMCCD) readout GArTPC and compared to a traditionally manufactured FR4 THGEM, with their charging and secondary scintillation (S2) light production behaviour analysed.

Abstract We suggest the possibility to build graphene analogue with the planar hexacoordinate wheel-type Fe@B6H6 cluster as the building block through studying theoretically the geometry, stability and electron structure of its dimer and trimer as well as the dimerization of the two trimers. Employing the dehydrogenation route to polymerization, we can obtain the hexagonal boron sheet that are partly and uniformly filled by Fe atoms in the center of the holes, achieving uniform chemical doping and a very large hexagonal-hole-density. Thus, we may offer a novel cluster-assembled material for experimental chemists to construct graphene analogue.

SUS304 stainless steel is characterized by combined tensile and compression testing, with an emphasis on flow stress at higher strain and temperature. The plastic deformation behavior of SUS304 from room temperature to 400 °C is examined and a general approach is used to express flow stress as a closed-form function of strain, strain rate, and temperature; this is optimal when the strain is high, especially during automatic multi-stage cold forging. The fitted flow stress is subjected to elastothermoviscoplastic finite element analysis (FEA) of an automatic multi-stage cold forging process for an SUS304 ball-stud. The importance of the thermal effect during cold forging, in terms of high material strength and good strain-hardening, is revealed by comparing the forming load, die wear and die stress predictions of non-isothermal and isothermal FEAs. The experiments have shown that the predictions of isothermal FEA are not feasible because of the high predicted effective stress on the weakest part of the die.

Abstract The Dirac point and associated linear dispersion exhibited in the band structure of bound (non-radiative) acoustic surface modes supported on a honeycomb array of holes is explored. An aluminium plate with a honeycomb lattice of periodic sub-wavelength perforations is characterised by local pressure field measurements above the sample surface to obtain the full band-structure of bound modes. The local pressure fields of the bound modes at the K and M symmetry points are imaged, and the losses at frequencies near the Dirac frequency are shown to increase monotonically as the mode travels through the K point at the Dirac frequency on the honeycomb lattice. Results are contrasted with those from a simple hexagonal array of similar holes, and both experimentally obtained dispersion relations are shown to agree well with the predictions of a numerical model.
