Since scheduling literature has a wide range of uncertainties, it is crucial to take these into account when solving performance measure problems. Otherwise, the performance may severely be affected in a negative way. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to minimize the total completion time (TCT) of a two-machine no-wait flowshop with uncertain setup times within lower and upper bounds. The results are compared to the best existing algorithm in scheduling literature: the programming language Python is used to generate random samples with respect to various distributions, and the TCT of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of the best existing one. Results reveal that the proposed one significantly outperforms the best one given in literature for all considered distributions. Specifically, the average percentage improvement of the proposed algorithm over the best existing one is over 90%. A test of hypothesis is conducted to further confirm the results.

We consider a no-wait m-machine flowshop scheduling problem which is common in different manufacturing industries such as steel, pharmaceutical, and chemical. The objective is to minimize total tardiness since it minimizes penalty costs and loss of customer goodwill. We also consider the performance measure of total completion time which is significant in environments where reducing holding cost is important. We consider both performance measures with the objective of minimizing total tardiness subject to the constraint that total completion time is bounded. Given that the problem is NP-hard, we propose an algorithm. We conduct extensive computational experiments to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with those of three well performing benchmark algorithms in the literature. Computational results indicate that the proposed algorithm reduces the error of the best existing benchmark algorithm by 88% under the same CPU times. The results are confirmed by extensive statistical analysis. Specifically, ANOVA analysis is conducted to justify the difference between the performances of the algorithms, and a test of hypothesis is performed to justify that the proposed algorithm is significantly better than the best existing benchmark algorithm with a significance level of 0.01.

Idiosyncratic volatility is a series of sharp increase or decreas in stock prices due to a company's fundamental. This study argues that transparent financial reports should reduce idiosyncratic volatility. Transparent financial reports are the function of CEO age, board of commissioner size, board of commissioner meetings frequency, Audit Committee meetings frequency, ownership concentration, and audit tenure. Therefore, this study examines the effect of these variables on idiosyncratic volatility. Samples were gathered from Indonesian public firms for the periode of 2014-2018. Using regression analysis for the test of hypothesis, results show that while board of commissioner meetings frequency and audit tenure have negative effects on idiosyncratic volatility, the size of the board of commissioners, concentration of ownership have positive effects on idiosyncratic volatility. On the contrary, CEO age and audit committee meetings frequency have no effects on idiosyncratic volatility.

The implementation of land use regulations on commercial property development is extremely important because of benefits abound in it for the society. Ilorin the capital of Kwara state, Nigeria is experiencing influx of many residents which gave rise to series of urban challenges. This paper appraised the implementation of land use regulations on commercial property development in Ilorin, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design and census method was adopted for the commercial properties and Estate Surveying and Valuation firms in the study area. Questionnaires were distributed to 26 practicing Estate firms in Ilorin Kwara State, 110 and 39 selected landlords / occupiers of commercial properties in Gambari-Ipata-Emir’s road and Government Reserved Area in Ilorin, Nigeria. Out of which 24 questionnaires (92%) and 110 (100%), 36 (92 %) were returned and found useful for the study. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of cross tabulation and inferential statistics of Independent Sample t – Test and test of hypothesis. The research revealed that the p-values were all greater than 0.01 which led to the acceptance of null hypothesis that the level of implementation of land use regulations on commercial property development does not vary in the study area. The study conclude that there were hindrances to effective implementations of land use regulations on commercial property development across the study areas, and if not corrected will continue to affect the welfare of the citizens, ease of commercial activities, will lead to falling in commercial property’s rental value, falling in urban aesthetic value, and an increase in externalities. The study recommended proper government intervention in providing better resources to improve the level of monitoring and enforcement of land use regulations on commercial property development.

Effective teachers are those who are highly engaged and who have an essential role in promoting student motivation and achievement. Thus, this study was conducted to ascertain the engagement of Mathematics teachers and its relation to the learning motivation of students in a state college in the Philippines. It employed the mixed methods, specifically Creswell’s (2014) sequential explanatory approach, with the survey-questionnaire, interview, and focus group discussion as data collection techniques. The findings of the study revealed that teacher’s engagement in Mathematics in terms of “Body Language and Behaviors,” “Consistent Focus,” and “Individual Attention,” were “Very High” while “Rigorous Thinking,” “Meaningfulness of Work,” “Verbal Participation,” “Clarity of Teaching,” “Performance Orientation,” “Interest and Enthusiasm,” and “Confidence,” were only “High.” Meanwhile, students’ motivation to learn Mathematics as to “Relevance,” “Interest,” “Satisfaction,” and “Confidence” were also “High”. The test of hypothesis on significant correlation showed that there was a close association between teacher’s engagement in Mathematics and students’ motivation to learn Mathematics. There was also a corroboration between the quantitative data obtained from the survey and the qualitative data acquired during the interview and focus group discussion. The result further implied that teacher’s high engagement contributes positively to students’ willingness to learn essential concepts and skills in Mathematics.

This study examined the relationship between foreign direct investment and economic growth in Nigeria using secondary data sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin between the periods of 1986 to 2017. The study employed Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and Pairwise Granger Causality test to ascertain the direction of causality between variable employed. Findings revealed that of the six exogenous variables used as an indicator of foreign direct investment, only the non-oil related foreign direct investment, trade openness and market capitalization were able to pass test of hypothesis, which suggest that of the six employed independent variables, three established the fact that foreign direct investment is a vital stimuli in promoting economic performance in Nigeria with more emphasis on the non-oil related foreign direct investment. The study thus concluded that non-oil related foreign direct investment is more helpful to Nigeria’s economy compared to oil related foreign direct investment inflows. Consequently, it is recommended that both Nigeria’s private and public sectors should intensify efforts to attract further foreign direct investment inflows into the non-oil related sectors of the economy, while relatively de-emphasizing attraction of inflows into the oil related sector in the interest of the country.

We study multiple linear regression model under non-normally distributed random error by considering the family of generalized secant hyperbolic distributions. We derive the estimators of model parameters by using modified maximum likelihood methodology and explore the properties of the modified maximum likelihood estimators so obtained. We show that the proposed estimators are more efficient and robust than the commonly used least square estimators. We also develop the relevant test of hypothesis procedures and compared the performance of such tests vis-a-vis the classical tests that are based upon the least square approach.
