Over the last decade, the emergence and significant growth of home-sharing platforms, such as Airbnb, has coincided with rising housing unaffordability in many global cities. It is in this context that we look to empirically assess the impact of Airbnb on housing prices in Sydney—one of the least affordable cities in the world. Employing a hedonic property valuation model, our results indicate that Airbnb’s overall effect is positive. A 1% increase in Airbnb density is associated with approximately a 2% increase in property sales price. However, recognizing that Airbnb’s effect is geographically uneven and given the fragmented nature of Sydney’s housing market, we also employ a GWR to account for the spatial variation in Airbnb activity. The findings confirm that Airbnb’s influence on housing prices is varied across the city. Sydney’s northern beaches and parts of western Sydney experience a statistically significant value uplift attributable to Airbnb activity. However, traditional tourist locations focused around Sydney’s CBD and the eastern suburbs experience insignificant or negative property price impacts. The results highlight the need for policymakers to consider local Airbnb and housing market contexts when deciding the appropriate level and design of Airbnb regulation.

The present study provides a simplified framework verifying the degree of coverage and completeness of settlement maps derived from the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database at the national scale, with a possible use in official statistics. Measuring the completeness of the objects (i.e., buildings) derived from OpenStreetMap database supports its potential use in building/population censuses and other diachronic surveys, as well as administrative sources such as the register of building permits and land-use cadasters. A series of measurements at different scales are proposed and tested for Italy, in line with earlier studies. While recognizing the potential of the OpenStreetMap database for official statistics, the present work underlines the urgent need of an additional (spatially explicit) analysis overcoming the data heterogeneity and sub-optimal coverage of the OSM information source.

To simulate sheet metal forming processes precisely, an in-house dynamic explicit code was developed to apply a new solid-shell element to sheet metal forming analyses, with a corotational coordinate system utilized to simplify the nonlinearity and to integrate the element with anisotropic constitutive laws. The enhancing parameter of the solid-shell element, implemented to circumvent the volumetric and thickness locking phenomena, was condensed into an explicit form. To avoid the rank deficiency, a modified physical stabilization involving the B-bar method and reconstruction of transverse shear components was adopted. For computational efficiency of the solid-shell element in numerical applications, an adaptive mesh subdivision scheme was developed, with element geometry and contact condition taken as subdivision criteria. To accurately capture the anisotropic behavior of sheet metals, material models with three different anisotropic yield functions were incorporated. Several numerical examples were carried out to validate the accuracy of the proposed element and the efficiency of the adaptive mesh subdivision.

Abstract Simulation is limited and remains briefly addressed in the literature of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process in joining dissimilar copper and aluminium. Thus, this study simulated the FSSW process of copper and aluminium to investigate the peak temperature during the plunging phase produced by all possible combinations of levels for tool rotational speed, plunge rate, and plunge depth according to the full factorial design. The modeling was established by Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) model and ‘dynamic, temperature-displacement, explicit’ analysis. The highest peak temperature of 994.4 oC was produced by 2400 rpm rotational speed, 100 mm/min plunge rate, and 1.6 mm plunge depth. The combination was suggested to be the optimum welding parameters in joining copper to aluminium as sufficient heat input was essential to soften the area around the welding tool and adequately plasticize the material. Three sets of confirmation tests presented consistent responses with a mean peak temperature of 994.4 °C, which validated that the response produced by the suggested optimum welding parameters was reliable. The statistical result reported that the variability in the factors could explain 84.12% of the variability in the response. However, only the rotational speed and plunge depth were statistically significant. The residual plots showed that the regression line model was valid.

Abstract Context The Sanjiangyuan region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (also known as the “Three Rivers’ Headwaters”) is the origin of Yellow, Yangtze, and Mekong Rivers and therefore the key water source for hundreds of millions of downstream residents. Protecting this region’s ecosystems is a key priority for sustainable development in China and Asia. An important social dimension of Sanjiangyuan is the long-established and widespread presence of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly as manifested in the large number of monasteries throughout the region. However, the influence of cultural, and specifically religious, factors on environmental change remains largely understudied here. Objective We focus on two types of spatial associations - point-point and point-area features - to quantitatively investigate the effects of Buddhist monasteries on LUCC in surrounding landscapes. Methods We conduct a spatially-explicit analysis of Sanjiangyuan for two periods, 1990-2000 and 2010-2015, to identify and quantify the influence of the presence and spatial distributions of Buddhist monasteries on LUCC (or lack therefore, implying landscape conservation) in comparison to village communities that lack monasteries. Results We found a “clustering effect” in which the spatial aggregation of monasteries being highly correlated with the preservation of natural ecosystems, specifically of grasslands and forests. Within monastery buffer zones with radii between 1 and 10 km, 7.13-9.30% more grassland area and 7.14-7.47% more forest area remained around monasteries compared to villages. This contrast decreased with increasing distance to the monastery/village. Overall built-up areas were also much smaller around monasteries than around villages, while unused land was more commonly transformed to forests and grasslands around monasteries.Conclusions These findings strongly support the idea that Buddhist culture, as manifested through its physical institutions and communities, are instrumental in achieving desired landscape conservation outcomes.

Laser shock peening creates compressive residual stress on the surface of the material, reducing stress corrosion cracking and increasing fatigue life. FE simulation of laser shock peening is an effective way to determine the mechanical effects on the material. In conventional FE simulations of laser shock peening, explicit analysis is used while pressure loads are applied and switched into implicit analysis to dissipate kinetic energy. In this study, static damping was adopted to dissipate kinetic energy without conversion into implicit analysis. Simulation of a single laser shock and multiple shocks was performed, and deformation and minimum principal stress were compared to evaluate the static damping effect. The history of the internal and kinetic energy were analyzed to compare the stabilization time depending on the damping value. Laser shock peening experiments were also performed on stainless steel 304 material. The residual stress of the specimen was measured by the hole drilling method and it was compared to the FE simulation result. The residual stress from the experiment and the simulation results showed similar distributions in the depth direction. Anisotropic residual stress distribution due to the laser path was observed in both results.

Abstract We prove that a formula for the ‘pluricanonical’ double ramification cycle proposed by Janda, Pandharipande, Pixton, Zvonkine, and the second-named author is in fact the class of a cycle constructed geometrically by the first-named author. Our proof proceeds by a detailed explicit analysis of the deformation theory of the double ramification cycle, both to first and to higher order.
