Water resources in karsts are scarce due to the high cavernosity in the otherwise low-permeability limestone rock mass. The highly variable porosity and transmissivity of karst aquifers are caused by a network of channels, caverns, and caves that typically act as water-bearing, connected vessels. Tunneling in a karst environment can severely deplete an aquifer and undermine the sustainability of water resources over the long term. A research study was carried out to elaborate and develop measures for the sustainable preservation of the water resources in a Slovenian karst, in which two approximately 7 km-long tunnels will be driven as part of the construction of the new Divača–Koper railway line. Hydrogeological site investigations were carried out with an aim to evaluate the transmissivity and spatial spreading of the karst aquifer along the route of the tunnels, including the observation of the long-term variation of the groundwater levels and trace experiments. The main findings, which are presented in this paper, were used to develop a methodology for the selection of adequate measures for tunnel construction with an aim of ensuring the sustainability of water resources in karst aquifers. The construction measures comprise limiting the inflows using injection grouting, obscuring the groundwater intake by undrained sections of the tunnel, and constructing bypasses around the tunnel to preserve the current groundwater flow regime. The presented methodology of dynamically accommodating the preventive measures to the actual hydrogeological conditions onsite is generally applicable for common cases in which the state of the karst aquifer could not be pre-determined with a sufficient accuracy of tens of meters to a meter. The spatially and temporally continuous hydrogeological investigations and decision-making charts to reduce the tunnelling’s impact on the karst aquifer are explained in detail in this paper.

More than 180 preventable incidents at hazardous chemicals facilities occur each year, resulting in deaths, injuries, evacuations, shelter in place orders, environmental contamination, and facility shutdowns with permanent job loss. As of June 17, 2021, the Chemical Safety Board (CSB) had nineteen open site investigations of incidents that in total killed thirty-two people, injured at least eighty-seven people, led to thousands of residents sheltering in place or evacuating, and resulted in many millions of dollars in property damage. This document outlines twenty-one practical and measurable actions that the CSB can take to rebuild its investigative and recommendations capacity; set clear priorities for agency action; reform its governance policies; and increase public transparency and engagement. The proposed actions address incident investigations, safety studies, safety recommendations, agency governance, and public transparency and engagement.

From the first use of airborne electromagnetic (AEM) systems for remote sensing in the 1950s, AEM data acquisition, processing and inversion technology have rapidly developed. Once used extensively for mineral exploration in its early days, the technology is increasingly being applied in other industries alongside ground-based investigation techniques. This paper reviews the application of onshore AEM in Norway over the past decades. Norway’s rugged terrain and complex post-glacial sedimentary geology have contributed to the later adoption of AEM for widespread mapping compared to neighbouring Nordic countries. We illustrate AEM’s utility by using two detailed case studies, including time-domain and frequency domain AEM. In both cases, we combine AEM with other geophysical, geological and geotechnical drillings to enhance interpretation, including machine learning methods. The end results included bedrock surfaces predicted with an accuracy of 25% of depth, identification of hazardous quick clay deposits, and sedimentary basin mapping. These case studies illustrate that although today’s AEM systems do not have the resolution required for late-phase, detailed engineering design, AEM is a valuable tool for early-phase site investigations. Intrusive, ground-based methods are slower and more expensive, but when they are used to complement the weaknesses of AEM data, site investigations can become more efficient. With new developments of drone-borne (UAV) systems and increasing investment in AEM surveys, we see the potential for continued global adoption of this technology.

<p>At the conclusion of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes more than 5100 homes had been deemed unsafe for habitation. The land and buildings of these were labelled “red zoned” and are too badly damaged for remediation. These homes have been demolished or are destined for demolition. To assist the red zone population to relocate, central government have offered to ‘buy out’ home owners at the Governmental Value (GV) that was last reviewed in 2007. While generous in the economic context at the time, the area affected was the lowest value land and housing in Christchurch and so there is a capital shortfall between the 2007 property value and the cost of relocating to more expensive properties. This shortfall is made worse by increasing present day values since the earthquakes. Red zone residents have had to relocate to the far North and Western extremities of Christchurch, and some chose to move even further to neighbouring towns or cities. The eastern areas and commercial centres close to the red zone are affected as well. They have lost critical mass which has negatively impacted businesses in the catchments of the Red Zone. This thesis aims to repopulate the suburbs most affected by the abandonment of the red zone houses.  Because of the relative scarcity of sound building sites in the East and to introduce affordability to these houses, an alternative method of development is required than the existing low density suburban model. Smart medium density design will be tested as an affordable and appropriate means of living. Existing knowledge in this field will be reviewed, an analysis of what East Christchurch’s key characteristics are will occur, and an examination of built works and site investigations will also be conducted.  The research finds that at housing densities of 40 units per hectare, the spatial, vehicle, aesthetic needs of East Christchurch can be accommodated. Centralising development is also found to offer better lifestyle choices than the isolated suburbs at the edges of Christchurch, to be more efficient using existing infrastructure, and to place less reliance on cars. Stronger communities are formed from the outset and for a full range of demographics.  Eastern affordable housing options are realised and Christchurch’s ever expanding suburban tendencies are addressed. East Christchurch presently displays a gaping scar of devastated houses that ‘The New Eastside’ provides a bandage and a cure for. Displaced and dispossessed Christchurch residents can be re-housed within a new heart for East Christchurch.</p>

Abstract This study investigates the directions of structural failures and toppling near Point Reyes Station during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (Mw 7.9). We examined archives of the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History and other historical sources for photographs and other evidence relevant to the dynamics of the 1906 rupture in this area. Using historical maps, site investigations, and previously unpublished photographs, we determined the precise locations and orientations of several structures, including a correction to the orientation of the train that was the subject of previous studies. Based on the photographic evidence and written accounts, we estimate the direction of toppling or collapse of each structure. Nearly all objects found were thrown in a direction approximately parallel to the right-lateral San Andreas fault, and in the same direction as the static ground displacement. This suggests that fault-parallel accelerations may have been stronger than fault-normal accelerations, and that the slip on the fault may have begun slowly and stopped more suddenly.

Site investigations of the soils are considered very important for evaluation of the site conditions, as well as the design and construction for the project built in it. Taihu tunnel is thus far the longest tunnel constructed in the lake in China, with an entire length of over 10 km. However, due to the very insufficient site data obtained for the lacustrine clay in the Taihu lake area, a series of self-boring pressuremeter (SBPM) field tests was therefore carried out. Undrained shear strengths were deduced from the SBPM test, with the results showing generally higher than those obtained from the laboratory tests, which may be attributed to the disturbance to the soil mass during the sampling process. Degradation characteristics of the soil shear modulus (Gs) were mainly investigated, via a thorough comparison between different soil layers, and generally, the shear modulus would cease its decreasing trends and become stable when the shear strain reaches over 1%. Meanwhile, it was found that a linear relationship between the plasticity index and the shear modulus, and between the decay rate of the shear modulus and the plasticity index as well, could be developed. Further statistical analysis over the undrained shear strength and shear modulus distribution of the soils shows that the undrained shear strength of the soils follows a normal distribution, while the shear modulus follows a log-normal distribution. More importantly, the spatial correlation length of the shear modulus is found much smaller than that of the undrained strength.

The aim of the study is to review the architectural-artistic, design and functional features of charity institutions through the example of the House of Diligence named after P. R. Maksimov, as well as peculiarities of the architect Nikolai Matveevich Sokolov’s creative method. The study was based on the historical analysis of P. R. Maksimov House of Diligence, archival and on-site investigations, and photofixation of the object. The article introduces new factual data and systematizes information on N. M. Sokolov’s creative legacy.

We present a workflow for investigating large, slow-moving landslides which combines the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technique, GIS post-processing, and airborne laser scanning (ALS), and apply it to Fels landslide in Alaska, US. First, we exploit a speckle tracking (ST) approach to derive the easting, northing, and vertical components of the displacement vectors across the rock slope for two five-year windows, 2010–2015 and 2015–2020. Then, we perform post-processing in a GIS environment to derive displacement magnitude, trend, and plunge maps of the landslide area. Finally, we compare the ST-derived displacement data with structural lineament maps and profiles extracted from the ALS dataset. Relying on remotely sensed data, we estimate that the thickness of the slide mass is more than 100 m and displacements occur through a combination of slumping at the toe and planar sliding in the central and upper slope. Our approach provides information and interpretations that can assist in optimizing and planning fieldwork activities and site investigations at landslides in remote locations.
