Examination of a promising iron-doped graphene (FG) sensor for the sulfur oxide (SO2) toxic gas was done in this work at the molecular and atomic scales of density functional theory (DFT). The models were stabilized by performing optimization calculations and their electronic features were evaluated. Two models were obtained by relaxing each of the O or S atoms towards the Fe-doped region of surface. Energy values indicated higher strength for formation of the O@FG model in comparison with the S@FG model. The evaluated quantities and qualities of electronic molecular orbitals indicated the effects of occurrence of adsorption processes on the electronic conductivity property of FG as a required feature of a sensor material. As a consequence, the idea of proposing the investigated FG as a promising sensor of the hazardous SO2 gas was affirmed in this work based on the obtained structural and electronic features.

Abstract Pseudocapacitances such as the hydrogen adsorption on platinum (HAoPt) are associated with faradaic chemical processes that appear as capacitive in their potentiodynamic response, which was reported to result from the kinetics of adsorption processes. This study discusses an alternative interpretation of the partly capacitive response of the HAoPt that is based on the proton transport of ad- or desorbed hydrogen in the double layer. Potentiodynamic perturbations of equilibrated surface states of the HAoPt lead to typical double layer responses with the characteristic resistive-capacitive relaxations that overshadow the fast adsorption kinetics. A potential-dependent double layer representation by a dynamic transmission line model incorporates the HAoPt in terms of capacitive contributions and can computationally reconstruct the charge exchanged in full range cyclic voltammetry data. The coupling of charge transfer with double layer dynamics displays a novel physicochemical theory to explain the phenomenon of pseudocapacitance and the mechanisms in thereon based supercapacitors.

Emulsion liquid membranes have been successfully used for the removal of different types of organic and inorganic pollutants by means of carrier-mediated transport mechanisms. However, the models that describe the kinetics and transport of such mechanisms are very complex due to the high number of model parameters. Starting from an analysis of the similarity between the elemental mechanisms of carrier-mediated transport in liquid membranes and of transport in adsorption processes, this paper presents an experimental analysis of the possibility of applying kinetic and mechanistic models developed for adsorption to carrier-mediated transport in emulsion liquid membranes. We study the removal of a target species, in this case, Cu(II), by emulsion liquid membranes containing membrane phase solutions of benzoylacetone (carrier agent), Span 80 (emulsifying agent) and kerosene (diluent), and hydrochloric acid as a stripping agent in the product phase. The experimental results fit the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model, showing good relationships between the experimental and model parameters. Although both Cu(II) diffusion through the feed/membrane interface boundary layer and complex Cu-benzoylacetone diffusion through the membrane phase controls Cu(II) transport, it is the former step that mainly controls the transport process.

Abstract The potential of zircon minerals in Indonesia, especially in Central Kalimantan, has not been adequately explored and developed into valuable materials with high technical and economic value and environmentally friendly. This research has the potential to be processed and formed into advanced materials, seeing its high potential as an excellent adsorbent for anions/cations in water treatment and industrial wastewater. This research aims to develop raw zircon minerals into zircon oxides, which will later be composited with magnetic nanoparticles. The zircon mineral processing is carried out using hydrothermal methods. It is known that the physical and mechanical characteristics are suitable to be developed by having good reusability and durability as advanced materials. The adsorbent characterizations of FTIR, SEM, and XRF analysis showed that the Fe3O4@ZrO2 had many different functional groups and a high specific surface area for adsorption processes. The Fe3O4@ZrO2 showed high adsorption uptake capacity and selectivity for the lead in the Sasirangan textiles wastewater. Therefore, the Fe3O4@ZrO2 have the potential to be used as an adsorbent in water and wastewater treatment.

The work is devoted to the development of a new method for the synthesis of magnetic composites based on manganese ferrite on a natural clay, coupling with their physico-chemical characterization. In the study, a natural clay of Kazakhstan obtained from the Turkestan deposit was used for the preparation of magnetic composites. The formation of materials with magnetic properties is an urgent task of our time, due to the needs of various applications of magnetically controlled materials for biomedical systems, electronic devices, catalytic and adsorption processes. The advantage of such materials is the ability to control them using a magnetic field for shaking, recovery, induction heating, among others. In this work, samples were prepared by co-precipitation of manganese and iron salts with 5 mol L-1 NaOH over the Turkestan clay (TC). Materials were characterized by various analyses, such as Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometric analysis (XRD), and elemental analysis. According to the results of physical and chemical studies of the XRD and thermal analysis, kaolinite is the main mineral in the composition of TC. Magnetic adsorbents MnFe2O4/clay with perfect magnetic separation characteristics were successfully obtained by chemical co-precipitation

Among the various arsenic sources in the environment, water may pose the greatest threat to human health. Arsenic and its compounds are known to have adverse health effects on humans, including skin cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and lung cancer, as well as vascular diseases of the legs and feet. There are a few separation methods that have been studied to remove arsenic species from water. Methods to remove arsenic species such as adsorption and ion exchange, coagulation and flocculation and membrane filtration have been developed to remove arsenic species from water. However, certain separation methods require a sophisticated equipment and are too expensive. From the different possible methods, this review is based in adsorption studies using imprinted polymer technology and economic sorbents as a media to remove arsenic from water. The details of adsorption processes for imprinted polymer technology have been discussed briefly and the comparative properties for arsenic species removal using different types of sorbents has been addressed significantly for being a user-friendly, highly extended and inexpensive methodology. However, a few drawbacks for each sorbent have been determined and the details was included in this review.
