Although glueing softwood is well mastered by the industry, predicting and controlling bond quality for hardwood is still challenging after years of research. Parameters such as the adhesive type, resin–hardener ratio, and the penetration behaviour of the wood are determinants for the bond quality. The aim of this work was to assess to what extent the glueing behaviour of beechwood can be improved by using structural planing. The different surfacing methods were characterised by their roughness. The bond strength of the micro-structured surfaces was determined according to EN 302-1, and the delamination resistance was tested as indicated by EN 302-2 for type I adhesives. Micro-structured surfaces were compared with different surfaces (generated by surfacing methods such as dull/sharp planing and sanding). In dry test conditions, all surfacing methods gave satisfying results. In the wet stage, the bond strength on the finer micro-structured surface slightly outperformed the coarse structure surface. For the delamination resistance, a clear improvement could be observed for melamine-formaldehyde-bonded specimens since, when using the recommended amount of adhesive, micro-structured surfaces fulfilled the requirements. Nevertheless, structural planing cannot lead to a reduction in the applied grammage since no sample with a smaller amount fulfilled EN 302-2 requirements even by observing the recommended closed assembly waiting time. Adhesion area enlargement of the micro-structuring is minor. The good delamination performance without waiting time (CAT) is not caused by surface enlargement, since finer micro-structured surface with negligible area increase and delivered even better delamination resistance. Subsurface analysis should be carried out to thoroughly investigate this phenomenon.

Abstract Composites are being used in the place of metals in many industries as they have a lower density and are cheaper than metals. In aerospace industries there is requirement for light weight together with strength, and reinforced fibre composites are superior in some critical properties compared with metals. In this study, laminated composites were fabricated with woven E-glass and jute fibres in an epoxy matrix by a hand layup method. The samples were prepared as per the relevant the America Society for Testing ad Materials (ASTM) standard and tested for mode II interlaminar fracture toughness to investigate delamination resistance. Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated by an end-notched flexure test using three-point bending. The fracture toughness G IIC was calculated for a curing temperature range from 40 °C to 70 °C at intervals of 5 °C for different sets of laminated composites. The investigations revealed that when the curing temperature of laminated composites was increased from 40 °C to 70 °C, the interlaminar fracture toughness G IIC was increased in neat woven E-glass laminated composites, decreased in neat jute laminated composites, significantly increased in laminated composites with woven E-glass fibres in compression and jute fibres in tension and slightly increased when woven E-glass fibres were kept in tension and jute fibres in compression.

In this study, varying ambient climates were simulated in a test building by changing temperature and relative humidity. Beech glued laminated timber (glulam, Fagus sylvatica, L.) was freshly installed in the test building and monitoring of the change in wood moisture content of the glulam resulting from the variations in climate was carried out. Subsequently, finger-jointed beech specimens were exposed to the variations in relative humidity measured in the course of the monitoring experiment on a laboratory scale, and thus an alternating climate regime was derived from the conditions in the test building. Its influence on the delamination of the finger-joints was evaluated. In addition, it was examined whether beech finger-joints using commercial adhesive systems fulfil the normative requirements for delamination resistance according to EN 301 (2018) and whether different bonding-wood moisture levels have an effect on the delamination of the finger-joints. In the context of the monitoring experiment, there was a clear moisture gradient in the beech glulam between the inner and near-surface wood. The applied adhesive systems showed almost the same delamination resistance after variation of relative humidity. The normative requirements were met by all PRF-bonded and by most PUR-bonded beech finger-joints with higher bonding wood moisture content.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of urea–formaldehyde (UF) nanoparticles on the barrier property and delamination resistance for epoxy coating in a 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Design/methodology/approach The UF resin was synthesized via sol–gel method, and UF/epoxy composite coating was prepared through ball-milling process; the microstructure and chemical composition of UF resin were observed using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy; the bonding strength of coating/metal interface was investigated through adhesion test; the mechanical properties of the coatings were studied by tensile tests; and the barrier and corrosion resistance properties were verified using salt spray test, cathodic delamination test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Findings The experimental results indicated that the UF resin presented uniformly dispersed nanoparticles in the epoxy matrix and enhanced the bonding strength of coating/metal interface and then improved the delamination resistance for composite coating, which resulted in the enhancement of the barrier property and corrosion resistance for UF/epoxy composite coating. Originality/value In this paper, an easily prepared blending compounding coating with excellent corrosion resistance property was synthesized via sol–gel method and ball-milling process. The effects of UF nanoparticles on the barrier property and delamination resistance were investigated in detail.

Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) and carbon fiber reinforced PEEK as orthopedic implant materials exhibit excellent material properties. Although delamination of PEEK materials has been reported in knee joint wear research, the delamination resistance behavior remains unclear. In this study, the delamination resistance of PEEK materials was investigated; these materials were compared to ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The results of a ball-on-flat type delamination test indicated that the PEEK materials underwent delamination considerably earlier than UHMWPE, and the contact area of the PEEK materials was smaller than that of UHMWPE. Moreover, the indentation modulus, hardness, and coefficient of friction were higher for PEEK materials than for UHMWPE. The reduced tendency of PEEK materials to undergo deformation to mitigate stress concentration at low conformity contact conditions contributed to their inferior delamination resistance compared to that of UHMWPE. The delamination resistance of the PEEK materials was equivalent to that of degraded UHMWPE, which highlights the risk of delamination of PEEK implants in a clinical context. Consequently, when using PEEK materials as an implant component loaded at a low conformity contact condition, the material selection and component design must be carefully considered. Overall, the results of this study can help guide the future development of PEEK-based implants.
