This study aimed to identify the metacognitive awareness of high school students in natural science learning based on gender. This research is a descriptive study with a sample of 24 students. Data on students' metacognition awareness was collected using the Metacognition Awareness Inventory (MAI) which was analyzed descriptively and statistically. The results showed that students' metacognitive awareness was categorized as good enough (1.33 < MA ≤ 2.33) and low (MA ≥ 1.33). Students' metacognition awareness was not significantly different in terms of gender (p> 0.05). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that metacognitive awareness needs to be improved through good interventions in learning. Student gender differences need to be investigated further using a larger sample to obtain more relevant and comprehensive data on metacognitive awareness

Smartphones have been an essential device in most of our daily activities. However, there is not much information regarding the difference of smartphone usage between gender among medical students. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of smartphone usage and the reasons of its usage among medical students by gender. A cross-sectional study was done, using self-administered questionnaires given to 300 medical students in University of Cyberjaya. The students were selected using stratified and simple random sampling methods. All respondents were using smartphone with majority from age of 18-21 years old (55.3%), female (67.7%), Malay (85%) and studying in 1st year (24.7%). The most popular reason of smartphone usage for male and female was entertainment mainly leisure activity (91.8% and 93.6%, respectively). There was no significant difference between gender and reasons of smartphone usage among medical students. Regardless, time must be managed wisely to avoid overuse of smartphones that can disrupt relationships with others. Keywords: smartphone, reason, medical student, gender, Selangor.

This longitudinal person-centered study investigated the combined role of student (gender, personality, choice of elective major subject) and teacher factors (perceived autonomy support, competence support, social relatedness) in explaining stability and change in profiles of extrinsic and intrinsic value beliefs in Mathematics, German, English, and French across Grades 9 to 11. In N = 850 (54% female, Grade 9: Mage = 15.6 years) Swiss-German upper-secondary school students, multilevel latent transition analyses revealed four rather subject-independent student profiles of extrinsic value beliefs across the four subjects, and five more subject-specific profiles of intrinsic value beliefs. Transitions into profiles with lower extrinsic value beliefs depended mostly on stable student factors such as their gender, elective major subject, and conscientiousness, whereas changes in intrinsic value beliefs depended mostly on students’ year-specific perceived need satisfaction in Mathematics and French. We discuss implications for the prevention of motivational decline.

Research shows that different student and teacher characteristics affect students’ perceptions of teachers’ interpersonal behavior to varying degrees. Studies on interpersonal teacher behavior mostly refer to such student and teacher characteristics as gender, work experience, age, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, as well as school affiliations and academic achievements. This study investigates several teacher and student characteristics in terms of their influence on students’ perceptions of interpersonal behavior of Turkish teachers of English as a foreign language. The variables investigated are teacher experience, teacher gender, teacher age, student gender and birthplace, and student educational background and academic achievement. In addition to insights drawn from the mean scores of student perceptions, the study found significant correlations for such characteristics as teacher experience and student gender.

Article visualizations:

Career refers to the term profession and a person’s journey or progress in a field. Choosing the right career is very important to ensure that it is in line with the qualifications and skills possessed as well as one's interests and personality in determining the success of life. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine career choice factors. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of Gerik Community College students on career choice factors. There are three factors in this study which are family factors, peer factors, and salary factors. This study is a descriptive quantitative study that uses a questionnaire as a research instrument. There were 68 students of Gerik Community College in the July 2019 session who were respondents for this study. The study used a simple random sampling technique to make a selection of respondents. The research data obtained through the questionnaire was analyzed using score mean and T-Test. The results of the study found that all factors obtained a high mean score but family factors are the main factors influencing students in a career choice that is a mean score of 4.39. Statistical analysis found no significant differences between gender with the factors studied. Indeed, student gender did not play a role in determining the career choice factors for this study.

Prospective college students have many options to choose from when deciding which type of higher education institution to attend. What compels potential students to enroll in a community college as opposed to other higher education institutions is unknown. The purpose of the study was to explore the academic motivation of students currently enrolled in a New York City community college using the Academic Motivation Scale College Version. In addition, the study examined the relations between academic motivation and student gender, age at time of enrollment, and familial level of educational attainment. Results from the present study may provide justification for incorporating dimensions of motivation into community college campus life for future students as well as benefit community college recruitment, retention, and completion efforts.

Abstract Background Empathy represents the ability to understand and communicate a patient’s situation, perspective, and feelings and, when demonstrated by healthcare professionals, can increase patient adherence, satisfaction, and treatment outcomes. Empathic students have stronger affective skills and can acquire, develop, reinforce, and display strong affective behaviors, abilities, and attitudes. Methods We measured student empathy using the Student Version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE-S) and assessed 3-year sequential clinical comprehensive assessment scores conducted by the Korean Medical Education Assessment Corporation to determine the relationship between JSE-S and clinical comprehensive assessment scores. Results This study population comprised 80 males (74%) and 28 females (26%). Thirty-eight students (35%) wanted to be private physicians and 62 (57%) attending faculty. Medical fields were common future majors for 58 students (54%). Surgical fields were considered by 40 students (37%). However, no significant differences in Korean JSE-S were observed according to medical student gender, career aspirations, or future major fields.

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the use of concept mapping as a method for analyzing pharmacy students’ qualitative perceptions of their expectations of elective courses and to thus help guide delivery methods and course content. A survey containing demographic, Likert scale, and open-ended questions was administered to second-year pharmacy students prior to the start of elective courses and an innovative methodology, concept mapping, was used to identify major themes relating to student expectations. The association between preferred class delivery method (online versus in person) with student gender and English-as-a-second-language status (ESL) was also assessed. Note that this study was conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ninety-eight out of 133 students (74%) completed the survey. Overall, 56% students stated that they preferred online delivery of courses (68% of these students were female, 36% were male). ESL status did not impact preference. The most common themes relating to student course expectations were the desire to learn about the elective course topic as well “real-world” utility. Our combined data indicate that delivery method is a key factor contributing to students’ choice of elective course and that concept mapping is an effective and efficient way to help identify student expectations of elective courses.
