Theoretical frameworks offer guiding principles to guide nursing practice on well-defined nursing knowledge. Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relationship empowers nurses in their work for regaining health and well-being for people. Understanding the theory and the connectedness that arises from this theory provides a structure for nurse-patient relations, even working through a language barrier as evidenced by the case scenario detailed in this article.

In 1906 Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, founder and head of the Grenfell medical mission of northern Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador, published a short article in Putnam’s Monthly about a nine-year-old boy named Clem Richards, who had shot himself in the knee while hunting seabirds. The boy’s identity was disclosed in full, with Grenfell including his name and image as well as a detailed description of his living conditions. The “story” of the boy’s injury and recovery became a favourite of Grenfell’s, and it was modified and republished in a number of magazines and books between 1906 and 1923. This article explores the appeal that Richards’ accident held for Grenfell and argues that his dramatic mid-winter rescue of the boy helped Grenfell promote his mission and construct a public image of himself that would appeal to American readers and donors. By comparing published accounts with Richards’ medical case record, however, we also see how much Grenfell distorted the incident to heighten its drama and reader appeal. The article also considers how the mission’s dominance over northern Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador enabled Grenfell to use Richards’ name and image for mission publicity with no consideration of patient consent.

Recent trends in medical decision-making have moved from paternalistic doctor-patient relations to shared decision-making. Informed consent is fundamental to this process and to ensuring patients’ ongoing trust in the health-care profession. It cannot be assumed that patients consent to the risk associated with medical exposures, unless they have been provided with the information to make that decision. This position is supported by both the legal and ethical framework around Radiation Protection detailed in this commentary.

Balint groups were put forward by Michael Balint, who studied the physician-patient relationship with its deep dimensions in the 1950s. The Balint group method consists of case presentations and general discussions that emphasize the emotional content of physician-patient relationships following the case presentation. One of the aims of establishing Balint groups is to help health professionals and medical students develop empathy skills to reduce communication difficulties between people. Today, worldwide widely used in a manner Approaches of Balint Group, was not given sufficient importance in Turkey. Today, although many scientific studies have been published about Balint groups, there is not any work published in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to discuss the results of some studies about the Balint Group Method and to explain the definition, content, and application of this method in family medicine. It is known that the Balint Group Method contributes greatly to the increase of physicians' empathy levels and to decrease their burnout levels. Nowadays, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, healthcare workers have quite tiring and difficult days and their burnout levels are increasing considerably. According to the results of the study, the application of the Balint Group Method by physicians in Covid-19 and the following period will contribute to better physician-patient relations as well as reduce the burnout levels of physicians. In Turkey, the introduction of the Balint Group Method, implementation, and inclusion in educational curricula are recommended. Also, it is recommended that physicians who have experienced the Balint Group Method contribute to the increase of the physician-patient relationship by making these experiences into scientific publications, sharing the results with the literature. As a result of the literature review, the implementation of this method in the virtual environment during the pandemic period and its spread throughout the world will make the application of this method even easier.
