Nanopore structure presents great application potential especially in the area of biosensing. The two-dimensional (2D) vdW heterostructure nanopore shows unique features, while research around its fabrication is very limited. This paper proposes for the first time the use of ion beam irradiation for creating nanopore structure in 2D vdW graphene-MoS2 heterostructures. The formation process of the heterostructure nanopore is discussed first. Then, the influence of ion irradiation parameters (ion energy and ion dose) is illustrated, based on which the optimal irradiation parameters are derived. In particular, the effect of stacking order of the heterostructure 2D layers on the induced phenomena and optimal parameters are taken into consideration. Finally, uniaxial tensile tests are conducted by taking the effect of irradiation parameters, nanopore size and stacking order into account to demonstrate the mechanical performance of the heterostructure for use under a loading condition. The results would be meaningful for expanding the applications of heterostructure nanopore structure, and can arouse more research interest in this area.

AbstractLengenbachite is a naturally occurring layered mineral formed with alternating stacks of two constituent PbS-like and M2S3-like two-dimensional (2D) material layers due to the phase segregation process during the formation. Here, we demonstrate to achieve van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of lengenbachite down to a few layer-pair thickness by mechanical exfoliation of bulk lengenbachite mineral. The incommensurability between the constituent isotropic 2D material layers makes the formed vdW heterostructure exhibit strong in-plane structural anisotropy, which leads to highly anisotropic optical responses in lengenbachite thin flakes, including anisotropic Raman scattering, linear dichroism, and anisotropic third-harmonic generation. Moreover, we exploit the nonlinear optical anisotropy for polarization-dependent intensity modulation of the converted third-harmonic optical vortices. Our study establishes lengenbachite as a new natural vdW heterostructure-based 2D material with unique optical properties for realizing anisotropic optical devices for photonic integrated circuits and optical information processing.

For the few years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have aroused general focus. In order to expand the properties and application range of 2D materials, two different layered materials are usually combined into heterostructure through van der Waals (vdW) interaction. In this research, based on first-principles simulation, we propose CdO/Arsenene (CdO/As) vdW heterostructure as a semiconductor possessing a direct bandgap by 2.179 eV. Besides, the CdO/As vdW heterostructure presents type-II band alignment, which can be used as a remarkable photocatalyst. Importantly, the CdO/As heterostructure demonstrates a direct Z-type principle photocatalyst by exploring the band bending mechanism in the heterostructure. Furthermore, we calculated the light absorption characteristics of CdO/As vdW heterostructure by optical absorption spectrum and conversion efficiency of a novel solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (ηSTH) about 11.67%, which is much higher than that of other 2D photocatalysts. Our work can provide a theoretical guidance for the designing of Z-scheme photocatalyst.

Recently, expanding the applications of two-dimensional (2D) materials by constructing van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has become very popular. In this work, the structural, electronic and optical absorption performances of the heterostructure based on AlN and Zr2CO2 monolayers are studied by first-principles simulation. It is found that AlN/Zr2CO2 heterostructure is a semiconductor with a band gap of 1.790 eV. In the meanwhile, a type-I band structure is constructed in AlN/Zr2CO2 heterostructure, which can provide a potential application of light emitting devices. The electron transfer between AlN and Zr2CO2 monolayer is calculated as 0.1603 |e| in the heterostructure, and the potential of AlN/Zr2CO2 heterostructure decreased by 0.663 eV from AlN layer to Zr2CO2 layer. Beisdes, the AlN/Zr2CO2 vdW heterostructure possesses excellent light absorption ability of in visible light region. Our research provides a theoretical guidance for the designing of advanced functional heterostructures.

AbstractThe mechanical exfoliation of naturally occurring layered materials has emerged as an easy and effective method for achieving ultrathin van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with well-defined lattice orientations of the constituent two-dimensional (2D) material layers. Cylindrite is one such naturally occurring vdW heterostructure, where the superlattice is composed of alternating stacks of SnS2-like and PbS-like layers. Although the constituent 2D lattices are isotropic, inhomogeneous strain occurring from local atomic alignment for forcing the commensuration makes the cylindrite superlattice structurally anisotropic. Here, we demonstrate the highly anisotropic optical responses of cylindrite thin flakes induced by the anisotropic crystal structure, including angle-resolved polarized Raman scattering, linear dichroism, and polarization-dependent anisotropic third-harmonic generation. Our results provide a promising approach for identifying various natural vdW heterostructure-based 2D materials with tailored optical properties and can be harnessed for realizing anisotropic optical devices for on-chip photonic circuits and optical information processing.

Designing the electronic structures of the van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures to obtain high-efficiency solar cells showed a fascinating prospect. In this work, we screened the potential of vdW heterostructures for solar cell application by combining the group III–VI MXA (M = Al, Ga, In and XA = S, Se, Te) and elementary group VI XB (XB = Se, Te) monolayers based on first-principle calculations. The results highlight that InSe/Te vdW heterostructure presents type-II electronic band structure feature with a band gap of 0.88 eV, where tellurene and InSe monolayer are as absorber and window layer, respectively. Interestingly, tellurene has a 1.14 eV direct band gap to produce the photoexcited electron easily. Furthermore, InSe/Te vdW heterostructure shows remarkably light absorption capacities and distinguished maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 13.39%. Our present study will inspire researchers to design vdW heterostructures for solar cell application in a purposeful way.

Photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials have great potential applications in the field of new energy, such as fuel cells, solar cells, and other fields. Van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction photodiodes are expected to be one of the promising applications of two-dimensional materials due to the photoelectric properties without consideration of lattice mismatch. High-efficiency photoelectric sensors based on two-dimensional materials have great significance to reducing the energy consumption of devices. Here, we build a complex vdW heterostructure by combining InS0.3Se0.7 with another suitable 2D material WS2. Few-layer graphite was used as electrodes to enhance the optoelectronic performance of indium monochalcogenides. Evident photocurrent is observed in the InS0.3Se0.7/WS2 vdW heterostructure device arising from the formed p–n junction at the interface. The uniformity and photoresponse of the InS0.3Se0.7/WS2 vdW heterostructure has been further investigated by the photocurrent mapping. It shows that the entire photovoltaic current was originated from the InS0.3Se0.7/WS2 vdW heterojunction by scanning photocurrent microscope images. Furthermore, the response speed is enhanced at small bias voltage. The transient photoresponse can be well reproduced in almost 100 cycles, indicating the good repeatable optoelectronic performance. Our study indicates that the as-prepared InS0.3Se0.7/WS2 vdW heterostructures are attractive building blocks for photodetectors application. Our findings will open up a new way to further develop high-performance, low-power, and energy-efficient photodetectors based on indium monochalcogenides.
