Described herewith is an electrochemical method to decontaminate sulphur compounds. Studies were carried out of sulphites (SO32−) oxidation on a range of anode catalysts. The electrocatalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, XRD, XPS and BET. Polarization curves were recorded of electrodes incorporating lyophilized higher fullerenes and manganese oxides. The experiments showed that lyophilized higher fullerenes and C60/C70 fullerene catalysts in conjunction with manganese oxides electrochemically convert sulphites (SO32−) to sulphates (SO42−). The oxidation products do not poison the electrodes. The XPS analysis shows that the catalysts incorporating DWCNTs, MWCNTs and higher fullerenes have a higher concentration of sp3C carbon bonding leading to higher catalytic activity. It is ascertained that higher fullerenes play a major role in the synthesis of more effective catalysts. The electrodes built by incorporating lyophilized catalysts containing higher fullerenes and manganese oxides are shown as most promising in the effective electrochemical decontamination of industrial and natural wastewaters.

The behavior of С56 fullerene when heated in a nitrogen atmosphere at a pressure of 105 Pa was studied using computer thermodynamic modeling. The modeling consisted in a complete thermodynamic analysis of the system using the TERRA software package, which is one of the most developed and efficient ones that implements such thermodynamic calculations. Experiment temperature ranges are from 273 to 3373 К. Based on the calculated data, a graph of the carbon balance in the С56-N2 system was constructed, the ongoing physicochemical processes were described, divided into four classes: sublimation, dissociation in the gas phase, chemical reactions occurring in the gas phase, dissociation and chemical reaction in the gas phase. Temperature intervals of reactions are identified. The equilibrium constants of the reactions are calculated and described, as well as the coefficients of these constants are found using the least squares method. The temperature interval of thermal stability of the condensed C56 fullerene and C56 vapors is defined. This work is one of the series of works on the properties of nanoparticles, in the future it is planned to study the thermal properties of higher fullerenes. The data obtained can be used to determine the explosive and fire hazardous properties of fullerenes as a dispersed solid.

This review describes the most significant published results devoted to the study of the nature of the higher fullerenes stability, revealing of correlations between the structural features of higher fullerene molecules and the possibility of their producing. A formalization of the substructure approach to assessing the stability of higher fullerenes is proposed, which is based on a detailed analysis of the main structural features of fullerene molecules. The developed substructure approach, together with the stability of the substructures constituting the fullerene molecule, helps to understand deeper the features of the electronic structure of fullerenes.

The influence of silicon atoms in the graphite electric arc zone on the formation efficiency of higher fullerenes C76, C78, C80, C82, C84, C86, etc. was studied. Additives of silicon carbide from 0 to 6.3 wt. % of composite graphite electrodes and optimization of the conditions of their evaporation make it possible to obtain soot with a content of higher fullerenes up to 15.5 wt.% in the extract and at the same time with a high total yield of fullerenes 10.5 wt.%.
