The degradation of the frictional characteristics of a wet clutch, with repeated engagements throughout its full life, alters the dynamic responses of the powertrain, which weakens the effect of the control system with a fixed control law. To solve this problem, cooperative effects of control parameters on the dynamic responses of the vehicle start-up process throughout the full life cycle of the wet clutch were studied. First, the degradation law of the wet clutch frictional characteristics was obtained with a test rig, and the life cycle of wet clutch was divided into three stages, based on statistical data from the automobile factory. Then, the powertrain model of start-up process was developed and verified with a test. Finally, the cooperative effects of the hydraulic-pressure rising rate and the initial relative speed on the dynamic responses of the vehicle powertrain at the three stages of the clutch life were studied. The results revealed that the control parameters have different influences on the dynamic responses of the vehicle start-up at the different stages of wet clutch service life. To obtain good start-up performance, different optimal combinations of controllable parameters should be adopted at different stages of the wet-clutch service life.

The multi-disc wet clutch is widely used in transmission systems as it transfers the torque and power between the gearbox and the driving engine. During service, the buckling of the friction components in the wet clutch is inevitable, which can shorten the lifetime of the wet clutch and decrease the vehicle performance. Therefore, fault diagnosis and online monitoring are required to identify the buckling state of the friction components. However, unlike in other rotating machinery, the time-domain features of the vibration signal lack efficiency in fault diagnosis for the wet clutch. This paper aims to present a new fault diagnosis method based on multi-speed Hilbert spectrum entropy to classify the buckling state of the wet clutch. Firstly, the wet clutch is classified depending on the buckling degree of the disks, and then a bench test is conducted to obtain vibration signals of each class at varying speeds. By comparing the accuracy of different classifiers with and without entropy, Hilbert spectrum entropy shows higher efficiency than time-domain features for the wet clutch diagnosis. Thus, the classification results based on multi-speed entropy achieve even better accuracy.

AbstractIn this article developed mathematical model that includes friction occurrence on spline connections is presented. The work also contains results of experimental research on torque capacity of multidisc wet clutch. These results are expressed as a function of contact pressure for different number of friction surfaces. Due to increased interest in research concerning multidisc wet clutches it is essential to determine impact of friction on fit connections on transmitted torque. Analytical calculations that include both known loss coefficient and assumed lack of friction on fit connections are compared to results of experiments. The paper contains detailed description of test stand and methodology of experiment. As a result of conducted tests it was found that correction coefficients known from literature are highly inaccurate. Measured values of torque indicate that transmitted torque reach significantly higher values. It was also revealed that after slippage appeared, the pressure plate usually moved in the direction of exerted clamping force, but movement in reversed direction also took place for some experiments. While movement corresponding to clamping force reached ca. 0.08 mm, in opposite direction amounted to 0.02 mm. Furthermore, studies presented that lapping of adjacent friction surfaces greatly affects differences between respective results obtained for a specific experiment.

Purpose This paper aims to design a single and double throat oil groove structure, which can reduce the drag torque of the wet clutch. Design/methodology/approach A three-dimensional simulation model was established herein using the computational fluid dynamics method. The influence of oil groove structure on the oil film flow field and the drag torque is obtained by a simulation. Findings Compared with the traditional radial oil groove, the results show that the single throat oil groove structure reduces the drag torque by about 24.59%; the double throat oil groove reduces the drag torque by about 47.27%. As the speed difference increases, the average temperature rise of the oil film of the double throat oil groove is 4°C lower than that of the single throat oil groove, indicating that it has good heat dissipation performance. The analysis results were verified by experimental results. Originality/value In this paper, the radial oil groove is taken as the reference object, and the structure of the oil groove is designed and improved. The simulation analysis and experiment verify the rule of the influence of the oil groove structure on the drag torque, which provides a new design idea for reducing the drag torque of wet clutch.

Wet clutch transmits its power by the friction torque between friction and separate disks. Conical groove friction disk is a new attempt in Wet clutch. Its configurations allow significant enhancement of torque delivery performances, compared with the traditional plane friction disk. In order to study the frictional performances of the conical groove friction configuration, the friction coefficient calculation model of conical groove friction disk was established, and experimental investigation was used to measure the friction coefficient under sliding velocity conditions. The influence of configuration parameters: cone heights and angles on friction coefficients were evaluated in a typical variable speed test. The results indicated that configuration parameters can affect friction performance in a constant speed period. The equivalent radius can directly describe the friction region of a conical groove friction disk. The constant speed test can be a useful method.

Based on the frictional mechanism of a wet clutch, frictional models of wet clutch engagement were established using the modified Reynolds equation and the elastic contact model between frictional pairs. Then, the heat flux models for the viscous shear and asperity friction were built, and the two-dimensional transient thermal models for the separator plate, friction disk, and ATF heat convection model were deduced based on the heat transfer theory and conservation law of energy. Finally, the Runge–Kutta numerical method was used to solve the frictional and thermal models. The average temperature of the separator plate, friction disk, and ATF were calculated. The effects of operating and material parameters, such as applied pressure, initial angular velocity, friction lining permeability, surface combined roughness RMS, equivalent elastic modulus, and ATF flow, on the thermal characteristics of friction pairs and ATF during engagement, were studied. The simulation results show that the temperature characteristics of the separator plate, friction disk, and ATF depend mainly on the viscous shear and asperity friction heat flux, and that the operating and material parameters of the wet clutch also have significant impacts on the overall variation trend of the thermal characteristics of the separator plate, friction disk, and ATF.
