Excessive use of refined flour, solid fats, and sugar in preparing baked products are considered to be unhealthy and is intricately linked with the development of lifestyle diseases. Replacing refined flour with whole wheat flour and solid fats with cold-pressed oil serves as an alternate option. The study was aimed at evaluating the physicochemical properties, nutrient composition, sensory attributes, and shelf life of cupcakes enriched using pomegranate seed oil (PSO). Vanilla and chocolate cupcake variants were prepared using 25 and 50% of PSO. A sensory panel consisting of 30 semi-trained participants was selected for evaluating the formulated products using a five-point hedonic scale. Nutrient content was estimated using standard techniques. The stability of the formulated product was determined by evaluating the physicochemical traits and microbial growth on the 0th, 4th, and 7th day. Mean scores of the sensorial analysis showed that the incorporation of PSO in cupcakes was highly accepted by the panel members. Chocolate cupcake containing 50% of PSO was found to be the most preferred product (3.53±0.94), followed by vanilla cupcake containing 25% of PSO (3.4±0.62). The moisture, protein, and fat content of chocolate cupcakes containing 25% of PSO were high. Cupcakes prepared with PSO can be stored for four days at room temperature. GC-MS analysis showed the presence of punicic acid, oleic acid, tocopherols, campesterol, sitosterols, stigmasterol, and α-tocopheryl acetate as pre-dominant fatty acid in unheated and heated PSO. In conclusion, cupcakes prepared using PSO showed acceptable physicochemical qualities and sensory properties which indicated its successful consumption by people affected with metabolic disorders.

Background: Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is an edible fruit that has been described as a medical and therapeutic functional food in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Objective: To investigate the use of serum creatinine (Cr) level and creatine kinase (CK) activity as indicators for gingival wound healing process rate in rabbits, supplemented on pomegranate seed extract (PSE). Patients and Methods: A total of 45 rabbit males were used. They were divided into 3 groups; 5 rabbits as a baseline group that left without a buccal gingival wound. 20 rabbits (5 rabbits per each time interval) as a study group with buccal gingival wound with PSE supplementation, and another 20 rabbits (5 rabbits per each time interval) as a control group with gingival wound without PSE supplementation. A buccal gingival wound was created on the lower right central incisor, and the suture was removed after (7) days. Blood samples were collected for the baseline group and at time intervals; 3 hour, 1, 3, 7 days after creating the wound for both control and study groups to determine serum Cr and serum CK. Results: Serum Cr and CK significantly increased in all time intervals after gingival wounds, in the control group compared with baseline values. Whereas the levels significantly increased in rabbits receiving PSE at intervals of 3 hours, 1 and 3 days after gingival wound, they returned to the baseline values, seven days after gingival wound incision. Conclusion: Serum Cr and CK increase in the buccal gingival wound, while oral supplementation of PSE can decline them to the baseline value after a period of time, therefore these parameters can be used as indicators for gingival wound healing rate. Abstract This study focuses on determining the fuel properties of apple pulp, pomegranate seeds, pomegranate peel and orange peel wastes and converting them into pellet fuel. Within the scope of the study, the organic wastes were dried, ruined into small pieces and then pressed to take the pellet form. Moisture content, ash content, volatile matter determination, fixed carbon content, total sulfur content, hydrogen content, lower heating value and higher heating value were analyzed as solid fuel characterization process. Experiments were carried out in an internationally accredited laboratory in accordance with ASTM and TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 Standards. Considering the results, it was determined that the pellet obtained from fully dry state pomegranate seed had a calorific value of 4244 kcal/kg, whereas the commercial pellet was 4759 kcal/kg under the same conditions. On the other hand, the moisture contents of the commercial pellet and pomegranate seed sample were 5.42% and 1.83%, respectively. The drying process was one of the costliest stages of pellet production. The low moisture contents can reduce the production cost and shorten the time.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the antioxidant properties of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Punica granatum (Pomegranate) seed in testosterone induced benign prostate hyperplastic albino Wistar rats. Study design: This study is an interventional study. Place and Duration of Study: The experimental aspect of this study was conducted at the animal house, Department of Pharmacology, University of Port Harcourt between April and September, 2019. Methodology: Seventy (70) adult albino male wistar rats were used for this study. They were divided into 12 groups of 5 rats each and fed with commercial rat diet and clean drinking water. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum seed were prepared using the maceration method. Benign Prostate Hyperplasia was induced in rats after they submitted to bilateral orchiectomy by daily injections of testosterone propionate (TP) (4 mg/kg b.wt.sc). Rats were treated with 500 or 1500 mg/kg b.wt. of aqueous or ethanoI extracts of Punica granatum seed, dutasteride or in combination. Administration of extracts was done by gavage. Plasma total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, were analyzed using sandwich ELISA Kits by Shanghai Korain Biotech Co., Ltd, China, while oxidative stress indices (OSI) were calculated. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 22.0 of Windows Stat Pac and p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The results showed that the mean TOS, TAS, SOD and OSI for the rats in the normal control group were 1.66±0.2U/ml, 2.71±0.25U/ml, 41.8±2.9pg/ml and 0.62±0.10 respectively. After BPH induction (group 2), the values were 3.25±0.5U/ml,1.17±0.14U/ml, 23.38±2.09 pg/ml and 2.81±0.60pg/ml respectively. There were significant decreases for TOS and OSI, and significant increases for TAS and SOD when the rats where treated with lower and higher doses of both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum and Dutasteride. Conclusion: In conclusion, both doses of Punica granatum seed for ethanolic and aqueous extracts individually and in combination and with dutasteride markedly reduced total oxidant status, oxidative stress indices and improved the activities of antioxidant parameters like superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant status.
