Abstract When maintenance resources in a manufacturing system are limited, a challenge arises in determining how to allocate these resources among multiple competing maintenance jobs. We formulate this problem as an online prioritization problem using a Markov decision process (MDP) to model the system behavior and Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) to seek optimal maintenance actions in various states of the system. Further, we use Case-based Reasoning (CBR) to retain and reuse search experience gathered from MCTS to reduce the computational effort needed over time and to improve decision-making efficiency. We demonstrate that our proposed method results in increased system throughput when compared to existing methods of maintenance prioritization while also reducing the time needed to identify optimal maintenance actions as more experience is gathered. This is especially beneficial in manufacturing settings where maintenance decisions must be made quickly.

This article presents the results of the analysis of the extent of damage to 138 multi-storey buildings with reinforced concrete prefabricated structure, which are located in the mining terrain of the Legnica-Głogów Copper District. These objects are residential and public utility buildings of up to 43 years old, erected in industrialized prefabricated technologies: large-block and large-panel systems. The research was based on the results of technical condition inventory carried out in 2002, 2007 and 2012. As part of the analysis, the damage intensity index wu was established for individual structural and finishing elements of the studied buildings. This index is defined on a six-point scale, which includes a detailed description of the extent of damage that corresponds to the successive degrees of intensity. As part of the research, the databases were significantly expanded and the generalized formulas of the damage intensity index wu for individual groups of buildings were verified. For this purpose, the partial least squares regression (PLSR) method was applied. Thereafter, the analysis of changes of this intensity in time was carried out and the relations between the extent of damage and the impacts of mining exploitation were examined. The approach presented in this paper and obtained research results are characterized by a high degree of utilitarianism and can be applied to increase the efficiency in the optimal maintenance management of buildings, including planning of repairs and retrofits throughout the technical life cycle of the buildings.

This article discusses the application of fuzzy mathematics for choosing time windows for the maintenance of non-public railway tracks. The design features of several stations and the points of junction of non-public railway tracks lead to hostile routes in the leads of the station. Moving the switching fleet through the neck creates hostility to the train route. To determine the optimal maintenance interval of non-public railway tracks, aimed at excluding hostility, it is necessary to know the throughput reserve of the railroad neck element in a certain time window. To localize the throughput reserve, it is proposed to divide the day into 30-minute intervals. This division will allow determining more accurately both the throughput reserve of the railroad neck element and the periods for servicing non-public railway tracks. The most appropriate way to calculate the throughput reserve is to use fuzzy numbers since this method allows taking into account the unequal capabilities of values within the intervals. Using the defuzzification procedure, a natural number is assigned to a given fuzzy number. After carrying out the defuzzification of the throughput reserve, the obtained values can be used to build an algorithm for selecting service intervals for non-public railway tracks.

Preventive maintenance is an important means to extend equipment life and improve equipment reliability. Traditional preventive maintenance decision-making is often based on components or the entire system, the granularity is too large and the decision-making is not accurate enough. The meta-action unit is more refined than the component or system, so the maintenance decision-making based on the meta-action unit is more accurate. Therefore, this paper takes the meta-action unit as the research carrier, considers the imperfect preventive maintenance, based on the hybrid hazard rate model, established the imperfect preventive maintenance optimization model of the meta-action unit, and the optimization solution algorithm was given for the maintenance strategy. Finally, through numerical analysis, the validity of the model is verified, and the influence of different maintenance costs on the optimal maintenance strategy and optimal maintenance cost rate is analyzed.

The safety and continuality of the railway network are guaranteed by carrying out a lot of maintenance interventions on the railway track. One of the most important of these actions is tamping, where railway infrastructure managers focus on optimizing tamping activities in ballasted tracks to reduce the maintenance cost. To this end, this article presents a mixed integer linear programming model of the Tamping Planning Problem (TPP) and investigates the effect of track segmentation method on the optimal solution by three scenarios. It uses an opportunistic maintenance technique to plan tamping actions. This technique clusters many tamping works through a time period to reduce the track possession cost as much as possible. CPLEX 12.6.3 is used in order to solve the TPP instances exactly. The results show that the total number of machine preparations increases by increasing the number of track segments. It is also found that the total costs increase by 6.1% and 9.4% during scenarios 2 and 3, respectively. Moreover, it is better to consider the whole railway track as a single segment (as in scenarios 1) that consists of a set of sections during the tamping planning in order to obtain the optimal maintenance cost. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2021-03091774 Full Text: PDF
