While the use of narrative elements in educational texts seems to be an adequate means to enhance students’ engagement and comprehension, we know little about how and to what extent these elements are used in the present-day educational practice. In this quantitative corpus-based analysis, we chart how and when narrative elements are used in current Dutch educational texts (N=999). While educational texts have traditionally been considered prime exemplars of expository texts, we show that the distinction between the expository and narrative genre is not that strict in the educational domain: prototypical narrative elements – particularized events, experiencing characters, and landscapes of consciousness – occur in 45% of the corpus’ texts. Their distribution varies between school subjects: while specific events, specific people, and their experiences are often at the heart of the to-be-learned information in history texts, narrativity is less present in the educational content of biology and geography texts. Instead publishers employ narrative-like strategies to make these texts more concrete and imaginable, such as the addition of fictitious characters and representative entities.

Information forms the basis for beliefs, judgements, decision making, and behavior. Nowadays, the amount of information available is continually increasing. Still, the quality and credibility of the corresponding sources vary widely. Thus, to avoid making judgments and decisions on basis of biased information, the credibility of information and sources must be carefully evaluated. However, information regarding the source is often not immediately accessible and, instead, must be purposefully sought. The standard information board paradigm does not include such a source information search. Therefore, we investigated whether that paradigm can be extended with an active search of source information in order to investigate search behaviors with regard to content und source information. To do so, we presented participants with information boards on different topics from two domains (i.e., health and education). The boards contained a question to outline the topic of information search in addition to four related sources. For each source, we provided information on topic-related expertise and potential conflicts of interest as well as content information regarding the question (i.e., pro and contra arguments). Information was hidden so that participants had to actively search the information. We were interested in the search start, search amount, differences in search between the domains and belief revision due to information search. Results show that participants primarily began information search with source expertise before continuing on to content information. In general, both content and source information were searched. Domain did not influence the start but the search amount⎯more information was searched on topics in the educational domain. In addition, search appeared to influence prior beliefs. For some topics, we observed changes in beliefs following information search. The findings indicate that our variations in the information board paradigm can be used to investigate content information search and source information search simultaneously.

The study reports on adults’ linguistic use of Nahuatl in the bilingual community of Santiago Tlaxco, Mexico. Using a survey approach, adults were asked to indicate their language choices (i.e., Spanish, Nahuatl or both languages) when interacting with people in various linguistic domains including personal, public, occupational, and educational. Findings showed that Nahuatl was used predominately with family members, with the exception of children aged 12 and younger with whom bilingual use was the norm. Similarly, in the public domain, bilingual language use was preferred for interactions with young people (less than 18 years), indicating a trend toward a gradual displacement of Nahuatl. However, Nahuatl was still the preferred language for interactions in the occupational domain, in places of worship and within social circles. Spanish was preferred for the educational domain, at the clinic, and in unfamiliar settings, such as with strangers. While adult use of Nahuatl facilitates language maintenance, there is a need for increased intergenerational transmission. Results are discussed in the context of language planning.

The article looks into the contemporary challenges for higher education in the era of unexpected global turbulences following the processes of globalisation not only in the social, political, economic and financial contexts but also in the educational domain. Multidimensional reality has brought its changes to communication and risen the standards of effective communication much higher than forecast in the previous years. The global developments drive for efficiency in intercultural dialogue, which causes reconsideration of the lingual status of education in multinational classrooms. The burning issues arise more sharply for cross border communication for business and diplomacy purposes. It means that a high demand in the educational market for LSP instructors (LSP – languages for specific purposes) at philology departments in Ukraine and abroad has started moving higher education to become more business oriented and stakeholder and university partnered. That said, it is necessary to analyse the existing foundations for poly- / multiculturality in higher education as supported by governments and the government of Ukraine, in particular, as well as go deeper into the levels of the research concept, the methodological level, to be more precise. As part of the research, the paper describes the key methodological approaches to foster and cultivate poly- / multiculturality in multi-dimensional classrooms – polylingual and multicultural. Such approaches are viewed fundamental to educate high-class LSP instructors in the field of foreign language instruction and acquisition in higher education. Among them are the systemic approach including the structural one, the synergic approach to cultivate poly- / multiculturality with future LSP educators in foreign language classrooms, cross-cultural approach, axiological and communicative approaches, environmental and reflexive approaches, etc.

Тhe paper presents the results of the study of the anthropological perspectives of the new vocational/professional school didactics. It analyzes the content (regularities, principles, forms, methods and criteria) of an enant postmodern education theory focused on self-centred individualism encouraging the future specialists’ reflection on the expediency of a peculiar machine kenosis, namely, transgression into the body of transformer, cyborg, robot-android. As an alternative, the author’s model of performative conception of professional training is introduced. The concept implies future specialists’ activity above the situation in the moral and meaningful mediation of the organizational principles of complex metasystems, atopic metaxis phenomena in Humanities and Science. The systematic thinking methodology of the proposed research has applied semiotic, phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches, methods of coherent modelling and expert evaluation of the theory of conceptual integration, the connective theory of metaphorical interpretation, the conception of non-linear epistemology, the principles of antinomy, verification, complexity, disjunctive synthesis. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in revealing the strategies of implementing performative higher school didactics and the metanoia technique for their realization in the process of metaphorical cognitivistics.

This quantitative, quasi-experimental study examined the leadership skills of pre-service and career teachers to determine how education influences leadership skills when assessed by two valid and reliable leadership assessments. The general problem was some teachers leave the field of education, due to lack of effective leadership skills in managing the classroom to include practicing leadership power skills, organizational skills, and classroom management skills. This study has revealed the significance of how engaging in effectual leadership skill instruction by embracing leadership power skills and organizational skills, which may assist teachers remaining in the educational domain. The theoretical framework most closely related to this study was transformational leadership theory and concerned whether or not leadership skills can be learned. Three research questions were analyzed and the findings affirmed the second and third hypotheses. The summary of results determined most teachers were rewarding, legitimate, expert, referent, or coercive leaders. The findings suggested doctoral level research was successfully conducted; leadership skills can be learned and further research was recommended. The conclusion was hope was given to future students and future teachers who enroll in leadership training programs. Recommendations derived from this study included universities should require mandatory leadership classes be offered to most all students, especially educational students; continued professional development seminars to career teachers was encouraged in order to educate and support career teachers as they develop into successful leaders in their classrooms, communities, and throughout the United States.
