This paper discusses how the strain gradient influences the fatigue life of carbon steel in the low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue regimes. To obtain fatigue data under different strain distributions, cyclic alternating bending tests using specimens with different thicknesses and cyclic tension–compression tests were conducted on carbon steel for pressure vessels (SPV235). The crack initiation life and total failure life were evaluated via the strain-based approach. The experimental results showed that the crack initiation life became short with decreasing strain gradient from 102 to 106 cycles in fatigue life. On the other hand, the influence of the strain gradient on the total failure life was different from that on the crack initiation life: although the total failure life of the specimen subjected to cyclic tension–compression was also the shortest, the strain gradient did not affect the total failure life of the specimen subjected to cyclic bending from 102 to 106 cycles in fatigue life. This was because the crack propagation life became longer in a thicker specimen. Hence, these experimental results implied that the fatigue crack initiation life could be characterized by not only strain but also the strain gradient in the low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue regimes.

People in China are paying more attention to environmental issues as they increase in importance and consequence. At the same time, the Chinese government has gradually begun paying more attention to the environment, advocating sustainable development. The government has been actively developing green financial products such as green loans, green insurance, green funds, and other financial products to help Chinese companies “go green” and reach peak carbon and carbon-neutral goals ahead of schedule. China attaches great importance to its “green transformation” goals, as can be seen from the number of new policies related to green and sustainable development. Under these circumstances, companies must follow the policy and carry out green upgrades or risk total failure. This chapter mainly discusses the background of what firms face in China's green finance environment, taking clean energy, green buildings, and green transportation as examples of how companies should adapt to these trends and improve their competitiveness.

Bellary region is characterized as one of the semi-arid zones of Karnataka, having only 508  mm of annual rainfall distributed over 35 rainy days. The ill-distribution of rainfall creates at least 5 drought years in every decade. The average rainfa1l distribution shows that there is a total failure in Kharif  season. However, some assured  rainfall  received during September and October a better prospect which assumes for rabi season .This  problem can be overcome to. certain extent by scientific management of crops and water. This calls for detailed analysis of any Important water resources Issues. Keeping this mind, an attempt made in this paper to analysis short and long period rainfall data. The probabilities analysis of. rainfall for shorter periods  for identification of suitable periods for sowing, return period analysis for designing of soil and water  conservation structures and determining the size of storage structures, the identification of number of Various rainfall events for designing water harvesting system for crop and water management are carried out and presented in this paper.

Poland is the only European country where the Osprey population is declining due to the mortality of adult birds from poaching, which impacts not only single breeding attempts but also the Lifetime Reproductive Success (LRS) of specimens. However, what if there came an extra mortality factor in the moment of the lowest numbers of Osprey, already vulnerable in the country? In the years 2018–2020, we installed 22 trail cameras and five digital cameras (live online video feeds) on the nests. The total failure level observed in cameras (18.5%) was high. We observed, using these cameras, the extra mortality of chicks (10.7% of potentially fledged chicks) and even adult birds by unexpected predation by Northern Goshawk and White-tailed Eagle. This phenomenon is also common in the national population, as we found a total of ten cases of total losses by predators (eight or nine of them were birds of prey), including nests not covered by camera monitoring. The extra adult-predation by Goshawks means an extra drop in LRS. Those adult and chick predations are an example of exceptional catastrophic phenomena, which have been described as the direct cause of the extinction of animal populations throughout history. Only active conservation and stop poaching of the Polish population could stop the decline and save the Polish Ospreys.

Response characteristics of small-sized laminated rubber bearings (LRBs) with partial damage and total failure were investigated. For nuclear component seismic isolation, ultimate response characteristics are mainly reviewed using a beyond design basis earthquake (BDBE). Static tests, 3D shaking table tests, and verification analyses were performed using optional LRB design prototypes. During the static test, the hysteresis curve behavior from buckling to potential damage was observed by applying excessive shear deformation. The damaged rubber surface of the laminated section inside the LRB was checked through water jet cutting. A stress review by response spectrum analysis was performed to simulate the dynamic tests and predict seismic inputs’ intensity level that triggers LRB damage. Shaking table tests were executed to determine seismic response characteristics with partial damage and to confirm the stability of the superstructure when the supporting LRBs completely fail. Shear buckling in LRBs by high levels of BDBE may be quickly initiated via partial damage or total failure by the addition of torsional or rotational behavior caused by a change in the dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the maximum seismic displacement can be limited within the range of the design interface due to the successive slip behavior, even during total LRB failure.

Abstract Detailed study on structurally failed well conductors on offshore wellhead platforms lead us to believe that existing assumptions of conductors transfer only lateral loadings to wellhead platforms while entire well vertical loading will be carried by conductor itself; could be wrong. The well conductors could become ‘forced’ to carry a very large vertical loads incase the conductors are structurally failed; especially once exceeded its original design life. As such, some new considerations during the wellhead platform design, which need to be followed, are recommended here. These are to cater any catastrophic eventuality of conductor failures which will restrain further collapse of the conductors or to avoid any progressive collapse of the platform. The recommendations are from a study based on actual findings observed recently in the offshore field. The connection between conductors and platforms are conventionally designed as guided based on the load transfer assumptions. That is the huge vertical loadings from internal conductor casings and associated items were not a concern for platform design structural engineers, traditionally, and as such the conductors were designed to be structurally connected to the wellhead platforms using vertical guides. Due to extended design service life of platforms, in many cases the design life went up to two times of their original design life, severe degradation of structural integrity of the conductors were observed in the field. Structural analysis and assessment were carried out on many old intact and failed conductors, in the offshore field, in order to assess its structural and loading behavior with respect to supporting wellhead platforms. The study provided that the failed conductors were leaning / collapsing to the wellhead platform resulting in transferring a huge vertical loads which originally were designed to be carried by conductors alone. This huge transfer of vertical loads from conductor to the platform was unexpected and was not considered in platforms original design. Therefore, the platform should have sufficient structural strength to cater such extreme eventuality to avoid the risk of complete collapse. A risk assessment of a tilted / failed conductors indicated that the consequence of total failure of a conductor could be catastrophic in case the platform failed to resist the collapsing conductors. This paper presents the details of the study carried out on aged wellhead platforms, having failed long serving conductors, in Giant offshore field, Abu Dhabi, along with details of new recommendations to be followed while designing new wellhead platforms. The paper also recommends the structural design consideration to be followed while designing wellhead platforms in-case a conductor repair is necessitated in future.

This paper addresses the problem of robust sensor faults detection and isolation in the air-path system of heavy-duty diesel engines, which has not been completely considered in the literature. Calibration or the total failure of a sensor can cause sensor faults. In the worst-case scenario, the engines can be totally damaged by the sensor faults. For this purpose, a second-order sliding mode observer is proposed to reconstruct the sensor faults in the presence of unknown external disturbances. To this aim, the concept of the equivalent output error injection method and the linear matrix inequality (LMI) tool are utilized to minimize the effects of uncertainties and disturbances on the reconstructed fault signals. The simulation results verify the performance and robustness of the proposed method. By reconstructing the sensor faults, the whole system can be prevented from failing before the corrupted sensor measurements are used by the controller.

Abstract Main conclusion Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress results in low success or even total failure of cryopreservation. Better understanding of how the plant establishes resistance/tolerance to ROS-induced oxidative stress facilitates developments of robust cryopreservation procedures. Abstract Cryopreservation provides a safe and efficient strategy for long-term preservation of plant genetic resources. ROS-induced oxidative stress caused damage to cells and reduced the ability of the plant to survive following cryopreservation, eventually resulting in low success or even total failure. This paper provides updated and comprehensive information obtained in the past decade, including the following: (1) ROS generations and adaptive responses of antioxidant systems during cryopreservation; (2) expressions of oxidative stress-associated genes and proteins during cryopreservation; (3) ROS-triggered programmed cell death (PCD) during cryopreservation; and (4) exogenous applications of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in improving success of cryopreservation. Prospects for further studies are proposed. The goal of the present study was to facilitate better understanding of the mechanisms by which the plant establishes resistance/tolerance to oxidative stress during cryopreservation and promote further studies toward the developments of robust cryopreservation procedures and wider application of plant cryobiotechnology.

<p>Achieving urban sustainability will be a major challenge in the coming decades. Especially in the Global South the dramatic increase in urban population is demanding intelligent policy solutions in order to prevent urban collapse. Integrated urban transport systems that provide for intelligent mobility solutions play a key role in the search for sustainability. Latin America in particular has seen the implementation of visionary urban transport systems in the cases of Curitiba and Bogota, where Bus Rapid Transit has emerged as a promising transport mode for developing cities with limited funding opportunities. This research thesis portrays and analyses Santiago de Chile's new integrated transport system, TranSantiago, and identifies three key components, which have been neglected in the case of Santiago and that are essential in the context of achieving urban sustainability - visionary leadership, institutional stringency and widespread public participation. TranSantiago must be considered a total failure when compared to the initial aims and objectives, taking into account the huge social cost and the lack of environmental or economic benefits that the system overhaul has created.</p>
